Chapter 425: Chapter 414: Guan Mountain Machinery Factory

They had been traveling for a week, and in the blink of an eye, they had arrived at North City; in another two days, they would reach Guan Mountain County.

The key factory wasn’t in the county town, but rather twenty kilometers outside the county, at the foot of a mountain.

The aunt watched as the road they were traveling on became more and more remote and grew anxious, "Living in such a mountain ravine, nothing will be convenient."

But no sooner had she finished speaking than she noticed the road from the county town to the factory was a wide and smooth asphalt road.

Every so often, there were also buses on the road.

The aunt said, "Ah, having buses is not bad. Qiuqiu, what about your family’s car?"

"The car is in Capital City. Nanzhou said we shouldn’t be too ostentatious here, so we only brought the motorbike."

"A motorbike is also good. It’s just that I don’t know how your work is arranged. Xiao Cheng should be going to nursery school by now, right? I don’t even know if they have a Nursery Class next to the factory."

The aunt worried all the way there, but when they arrived, after heading inside past a mountain peak, they saw a tall and spacious gate with a sign erected above it that read Guan Mountain Machinery Factory.

There were two guards beside it and quite a few people coming and going at the gate.

After the second cousin got out of the car and mentioned Jiang Nanzhou’s name, the gatekeeper immediately said, "You must be Group Leader Jiang’s family, right? Group Leader Jiang has already given us the heads-up, and we have been waiting for you. Just register here, and I’ll give Group Leader Jiang a call."

Lu Jingqiu got out of the car first and then helped the children down as well.

The children, entering a new environment, were not at all shy, but rather very curious.

Jingqiu told them not to run around.

On the other hand, the aunt observed the surroundings and said, "There are quite a few people here, it looks like they’re residents."

Half an hour later, Jiang Nanzhou hurried over.

"Second cousin, aunt, you’ve worked hard."

The aunt said, "What hard work? We’ve just been sitting in the car all the way, enjoying the scenery."

Jiang Nanzhou laughed and gave the second cousin a pat on the back, "I’ll drive."

"Okay."

It was only after they entered that they realized such factory sites all have features that depend on the mountains, are dispersed, and hidden.

The distribution was also quite fragmented, with several factory buildings.

Jingqiu had thought there would only be one factory building.

Jiang Nanzhou said, "The stuff researched here varies, and each factory is responsible for different things. However, the family quarters are all in one place."

Driving the car and making a right turn, within a few minutes, they came upon a row of single-unit houses.

This area was high up and fairly flat, their house was on the third row on the right side, next to the mountain.

The aunt was pleased, "This building is good, close to the sunlight."

The unit had six floors, and they were on the third floor.

Each building had two units, with four households per unit.

They were in the west unit. Upon entering, there was a kitchen on one side and a bathroom on the other side.

Inside was a rectangular living room, quite large, called a hall, but it was more like two halls.

Then going further in, there were two bedrooms side by side.

Outside the bedrooms was a very long balcony, shared between the two bedrooms.

The aunt said, "Wow, this balcony is really long. The sunshine is good. It’s just that the living room doesn’t have a balcony."

Second cousin said, "Doesn’t the living room have windows? How come there are only two beds inside the house? If we had known, we would have helped you move the furniture over from the courtyard house. But they’ve got these radiators here, one in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, and two in the living room. One in each bedroom. For such a big space, is that enough to keep it warm?"

Jiang Nanzhou laughed, "In winter here, it gets more than thirty degrees below zero and the snow is very thick, but the factory is very generous with the coal, so the house stays quite warm."

"That’s good, but there’s no furniture in the rooms."

Jiang Nanzhou said, "I’ve ordered the beds and wardrobes, but because the wardrobe delivery is full, and the dining table outside was supposed to be brought over today, I haven’t had the time to take care of it."

"Aunt, just return the courtyard house directly to the team, and the furniture inside, maybe move it back home?"

Jingqiu said, "I moved my mother’s boxes to our place, and as for the rest, just sell them. The courtyard has already been taken back."

Jingqiu looked around the place, went to the kitchen to check it out, and then checked the bathroom, which still had squat toilets.

That was fine; Jiang Nanzhou had cleaned it quite well. The kitchen was made up of several tables put together, all covered in grease, not so clean.

Jiang Nanzhou said, "I didn’t touch the kitchen, thinking we’d wait for you to come over and see how to clean up. We can have someone make changes if necessary."

"Yeah, it does need some remodeling," the auntie agreed.

Second cousin asked, "Nanzhou, did you order a sofa yet? If not, I can sort it out for you."

Lu Jingqiu replied, "Second cousin, there’s no need, the living room here is too small to accommodate one. We’ll go to the furniture city another day and buy a smaller sofa."

"Okay."

Jiang Nanzhou laughed, "I knew you wouldn’t like those wooden ones, so I didn’t order."

Second cousin said, "The county town probably only has wooden ones. When I get back, I’ll look around in Yangcheng City for you."

"Great."

After everyone had looked around the house, they went down to move things.

Lu Jingqiu asked her aunt to watch the two children and to set up Hua Hua’s litter box; she had brought along half a bag of sand since she was worried it might be hard to find here.

The three of them went down to move things.

First, they got the motorcycle down, and by this time, those who had work had gone to work, and the family members either tended to their vegetable plots or went out to buy groceries.

There weren’t many people at home, but there were still those who poked their heads out of the windows to look.

Those who knew Jiang Nanzhou greeted him, "Group Leader Jiang, your sister-in-law has arrived, huh?"

"Yes, this is Qiuqiu, and this lady is Worker Liu’s family member, Sister-in-law Liu, living just below us."

"Oh, hello Sister-in-law Liu."

Lu Jingqiu greeted her downstairs and then continued with the moving.

What she had brought along were pots and pans, a TV, an electric fan, a rice cooker, and a radio.

The rest were clothes for spring, summer, fall, and winter; of course, most of them were hers and her son’s. Her husband really didn’t have many.

Seeing that it was already past eleven o’clock, the aunt asked, "Is there a place nearby to buy groceries? It’s almost lunchtime."

"There is, auntie. For lunch today, let’s eat at the canteen since we don’t have gas at home and can’t cook."

Jiang Nanzhou didn’t insist on organizing things; after resting for a few minutes, he led them to the canteen.

The canteen was closer to the factory and a bit of a distance from the residential area.

It required a walk of more than ten minutes.

Jiang Nanzhou explained that in this Military Industrial City, more than five thousand employees and their families lived here. It was practically a city on its own. Aside from the workshop buildings, there were office buildings for each factory area and residential buildings for families in the living areas. There were also recreational facilities like a lit sports field, a club, schools, hospitals, bathhouses, guest houses, supply and marketing cooperatives, convenience stores, and boiler rooms for heating — just like any other city, mostly red-brick and green-tile buildings, some four and some six stories high, all built against the mountainside.

The auntie exclaimed in surprise, "There are schools and hospitals too? I thought the kids would have to travel to the city for school."

Jiang Nanzhou said, "There’s a big Nursery class here, as well as an elementary school and a middle school. There’s no high school though, so for that they would have to go to the county."

"That’s very good," Lu Jingqiu remarked.

Along the way, Lu Jingqiu noticed a small supermarket.

She also saw a community club, which is essentially a place for the elderly to engage in activities.

A place to play chess, cards, or just to chat.

There was also a large sports field, ping-pong tables, basketball courts, and even a soccer field.

Jiang Nanzhou said, "The kindergarten and elementary school are behind the residential area. The middle school is on the right side of Factory No. 1, in that open space."

Lu Jingqiu glanced over from a distance and could indeed see a row of buildings.

The canteen was situated halfway up the mountainside, close to several factory areas.

The key thing was that the canteen was exceptionally large in order to accommodate so many people.

It was divided into two floors: downstairs for regular meals and upstairs was the stir-fry section.

If you had guests over for a meal, you could come upstairs, but you would have to pay separately.

Second cousin laughed, "This place is even better than our compound."

Jiang Nanzhou also thought so; he had heard about this place before but had never visited until he was unexpectedly assigned here.

Another classmate from their group was also posted here.

From now on, he would be serving the country in this rear base.
