Chapter 325: A cheat of a king - I

Unless the Queen was attending the court room officially, she would usually take the backseat on the balcony above the thrones.

That was where his aunt had taken me and had answered the question whether or not I would be playing an active role in tonight’s court.

I wasn’t.

I was a mere spectator along with many others, until the king asked for my opinion. Not as the Queen, since I was not titled as one but as a mere spectator only.

Chiara sat with me but everyone knew who I was. I could feel the stare of everyone on me. Even glares.

Since I had been doing this for a long period of time, it was easy to ignore them. It was easy to think that they never existed.

"Try not to speak," Chiara whispered in my ear, "we can easily hear it and it is distracting in court."

"What if you have something to say?" I asked, because usually you just ask or talk with the next person since humans could not hear what was going on most of the time.

She waves her hand around before dropping them. "nothing. You talk to me after but not during. Unless of course, he asks for your opinion." 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

"Ask? then would everybody not hear what I have to say?"

"Well," she chuckled, "you certainly got me there. Usually, we prefer and stick to writing."

The moment she moved away and sat more comfortably in her chair, the doors opened and walked inside the king.

Tristan.

To custom and rules dictated, everyone stood up and courtesies before waiting for the word of talking to sit.

He nodded and my knees buckled to seat down on the seat before I noticed that everyone Else was standing up.

Then I noticed that they were all looking at me. Glancing down at Tristan, his face was slightly tilted into my direction. He was not looking at me, but it was clear that he was listening.

"Your Grace," Chiara whispered, leaning close, "you sit before The King."

Before the king? I turned towards her with questions ready, but she silenced me with a look.

I sat down, very much aware of everyone looking at me before looking at Tristan who noted at everyone and repeated my action.

After that everyone sat down.

That was against the very idea of the king being the highest authority in the country. The Queen was given more importance because she sat down before baking even though she was not heavily pregnant. Even then, most of the times, she stood as long as the king wanted.

I glanced at Chiara Who was not looking at me purposely. She was avoiding my eyes.

How was the Queen more important than talking to them? Tristan was a vampire, he was supposed to be a title above me.

The doors opened and a row of guards appeared after which came just care staff that had previously run away with me.

Behind them, came another row of guards that stopped behind them. They were blocking the exit and their view of the king.

My back straightened slightly and I leaned forward to get a better look at them. They look scared, terrified even by what the outcome of this council was going to be. I was just as terrified as them. By the looks of them, I was not sure if they were being fed or not, because the terrified look on their face and their shivering bodies betrayed nothing except the fear they felt.

Vaugh stood up and once he was in between the staff members and the king setting on his throne, he turned his attention to everyone in attendance as he addressed them,

"We are gathered here to hear the judgement of these traitors. Not only did these servants think of committing an act of treason, they had carried out a plan to kill all of us on night of celebration of our own."

My eyes closed as the murmurs began. Everyone was talking and some of them even looked horrified as if they were hearing it for the first time.

"We have reached a conclusion that would be known by everyone starting from today until the generations coming forward in the future both inside and outside the palace." Vaugh’s voice silences every other person speaking in hushed whispers. "The punishment has been decided And will not be changed."

I clenched my fists around the fabric of my dress. They were going to reveal my agreement with the king. I was to be married to the vampire king after which, or maybe before, I would be turned into one of them.

The anticipation was killing me. I knew many people were going to be disappointed in me and when the news would reach my sister, God only knew what would she think.

"The traitorous servants will be turned into vampires at the brink of dawn before they begin the process of change." Vaugh announced. "take them away and get them ready."

What? WHAT?!

"Turning?" I whispered Before looking at Chiara. Did she now? Was she aware of them? She had to be. She was always involved in the decisions of Tristan somehow!

The woman still refused to meet my eyes. In fact, she had turned her back slightly to me.

My eyes turned to the traitors in question. They were being taken away, all of them crying but still walking with their heads hanging down in shame. They had accepted this fate because there was nothing they could do about it.

But if Tristan chose to punish them, how did he decide to punish me with it? I had requested him, begging him to punish me instead of them but he had gone against it and decided against it.

So he could not punish both of us. That meant, he had to let one of us go, which was either me or the staff members. He could not turn us both.
