Chapter 30: The investigation.

The first thought that came into my mind after I saw him catch me red-handed was that he would ask me and my companions to leave his carriage and carry on the journey on our own. He would simply order us to get down in the middle of nowhere.

On the other hand, he viewed me as someone who was truly very interesting before his eyes narrowed own on me. I felt small and embarrassed under the scrutiny of those cold eyes who had let go of the warmth and amusement that they once possessed. I felt like a child being caught in her mischief.

"What are you doing?" His cold voice made me flinch even though he had not raised his voice.

I wanted to look away from his eyes and hide in a corner but then I remember who I was, I was a crowned Princess and there was no one more powerful than me especially a merchant who could not even gather one-fourth of the wealth and luxuries I possessed. He had no power over me.

So who was I to bow down and hide away from this man?

Stretching my lips slightly, I answered, "Some gentleman you are. You fell asleep and I was bored so I thought what better than to go through to the manuscripts and scroll that were kept next to you. Only to my surprise that there were characteristics for the children that had been kidnapped. " I folded my hands in my lap as I asked him next, "It is it that you have lied to me about your occupation as a merchant because you are involved with the abductions of those going children."

Had it been someone else I would have immediately seen a flash of panic or the fear of being caught in their face or their body language but with this man it was truly hard to detect what he was thinking especially with those cold and detached eyes and that emotionless face.

He was not even a little scared about what was supposed to happen next which meant either he had not heard me or he simply did not believe me to be a force that was to be reckoned with.

He continued to look at me and it truly unnerved me. "Not everything is a lie and not everything is for you to see." he said in a calm voice without any hint of panic.

"Might not be," I dusted off the dust of my lap, "But I have seen it nonetheless and it is in my knowledge now. Why do you have the characteristics of the children?"

He stared at me and I stared back. Just time I did not look away because it was the question of my leadership, what kind of Queen or princess I was if I could not save the people in my own country. because whatever this was, was coming to mine.

He sighed and it was long and tired one. It conveyed that he was giving up and I knew he had the option not to but still did.

Why? I wondered.

"I . . . My cousin; Kira, Lara, and I were close to her, was abducted and unlike the others making an appearance, she has not. It scares us that she is not yet seen and it only points to the reality more that she may not be alive." He looked out of the window and I understood why. The was not easy to relate to anyone.

Understanding dawned on me. He was doing it for his reasons yet he was involved with every kidnapping that he could get his hands on which would work well in my favor because I wanted to do the same research.

"I am sorry to hear that." I truly was. "But I am hoping that you would involve me in your investigation as well." I offered my help.

He looked up immediately with a suspicious look. "I do not even know who you truly are or why you are going to the country in the first place. Why is it that you think I would trust you to help me in this?"

I smiled and looked down as I said, "I suppose I could say that you are not the only one who has lost a family member to these abductions. If you could be so kind to involve me in that I believe you and I can reach somewhere." I looked at him with hope in my eyes.

The hope was true you but the reason was not nonetheless he did not need to know about that.

He scrutinized my face once again but to be honest I have grown used to it. He was just a merchant and I had dealt with men of more experience and power. I had not succumbed to them so there was no reason now to succumb to a man that held no status in front of me.

"Please," the play must continue, "She was a young girl barely crossing the age of eighteen and all we know is she never came back home." 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

He did stare at me for a moment or two longer but then nodded eventually, giving into my story. "I suppose I could." He looked out as he muttered, "You don’t live in the capital I can tell that from your behavior and the language you use. It is too pure and sweet. So I must make it my duty to inform you that the journey we will embark from here is not going to be easy at all." he warned.

He did not need to tell that to someone who had gotten sold to a brothel and then to a man out of pure stupidity.

"I understand," I answered with determination in my voice. "I do not hope that we will reach the very end of these abductions and help the king capture them but I hope that we at least find our family members to be alive." I gave him a teary smile, not my first and not my last, "I just . . ." I sniffed and looked away.

"My lady, please," He held out a handkerchief and I took it, thanking him as well. "Please do not overwhelm yourself like this. You must use your dreams in the situation and not our hearts."

I nod, sniffing again. "I understand," I said as I looked into his eyes. He held the same determination too.
