Chapter 398: Chapter 398: Skin and Bones

Lin Shuo strode forward to block in front of the table, with Ah Tie and Shen Qing standing on either side of Yun Jiao.

Fortunately, as the government official shouted, these people charged to the table but stopped, not daring to advance further, then started squeezing together to form a queue.

Yun Jiao was witnessing such a scene for the first time; she looked around and saw that the longest queues were at her spot and next to Doctor Ye.

There was already a slum in the west side of the city, and the houses here were lower and more dilapidated compared to other areas in the city, meaning this area was inhabited by the poor.

Presumably, this was the reason why the free clinic was strategically set up by the West City Gate.

Though the queue was crooked, it was at least formed.

The first patient was an old woman whose two sons were stout and strong; it was because of them pushing forward that they managed to be first.

Yun Jiao signaled her to sit down, inquiring about her illness while checking her pulse.

In no time, she prescribed a remedy.

Yun Jiao observed the old woman’s two sons; their clothes were tidy, though not of fine fabric, without patches, so she estimated that they could afford the one or two taels of silver needed for the medicine.

Thus, she did not stamp it.

Ah Tie handed over the prescription, "Go to Renxin Hall on Furong Road to get the medicine."

The old woman’s son took the prescription and was about to leave when the other pointed at the jar and asked, "What is this?"

Shen Qing explained to him, "It’s a cooling tea to relieve thirst; it’s free, if you want to drink it, just bring your own bowl to fill."

One of the sons supported the old woman to walk slowly, while the other ran quickly, presumably to fetch a bowl.

Many from the queue heard this; some shouted for the children playing nearby to go home and fetch bowls, while families who came with more people sent one back to get a bowl.

When someone brought a bowl over, Shen Qing took a ladle and filled it with the cooling tea.

Some people were greedy, coming from home with an earthen jar, wanting to take more back; Shen Qing indulged them not, and whoever came only received one ladleful.

Throughout the morning, Yun Jiao issued about seven or eight prescriptions stamped with a red seal.

The sun was getting scorching towards noon, making it unbearable to sit.

Though Yun Jiao was sitting under an umbrella, with several people taking turns fanning her, she too couldn’t endure it any longer.

Her whole body was sweaty, and the blue cotton garment she wore especially was soaked with sweat; fortunately, its dark color made it less noticeable.

Lin Shuo came over and said, "The sun is too harsh, you can go cool off in the city gate tunnel for a while and come back later."

Yun Jiao was about to get up when she saw the woman at the front of the line, who was bone-thin, with clothes full of patches, standing there on the brink of collapse, if not for a man supporting her, she would have fallen long ago.

Yun Jiao quickly invited the woman to sit down.

Sitting down, she first observed the woman’s complexion, which was thin and dry, lacking luster on the skin and hair.

Yun Jiao asked, "Where are you feeling unwell?"

The woman replied weakly, "My legs are weak, I often stumble while walking due to lack of strength."

"My hands have no strength too, can’t hold anything slightly heavy."

"My hands and feet go numb, and my legs often cramp."

While checking her pulse, Yun Jiao also asked, "What about your menstruation?"

The woman shook her head, took a breath, "It hasn’t come for years."

Yun Jiao frowned and asked, "How old are you? When did you start menstruating, how many children have you conceived? How many were born?"

The woman answered weakly, "I’m twenty-seven this year, my first menstruation was at fourteen."

Yun Jiao was startled to hear this; it was believable if this woman claimed to be forty.
