The Overnight Chosen Wife: darling, kiss me deeper-Chapter 602: Heirloom
Chapter 602: Heirloom
Lin Jian parked the car and got out, holding a bouquet of roses in his hand. He michecked himself all over again to make sure he looked perfect and took in a deep breath. He was going to pick Ruby up but she didn’t know it yet. He had been out of the city for two weeks and was scheduled to return the following day.
However, he knew that today would be her last day of campus so he made sure to be in the city in time to surprise her. Would she like it?
He took out his phone and called Xingyu for the umpteenth time. "Hey, is..."
"Everything is perfect, man." Xingyu interrupted him, having had to say the same words every ten minutes for the last three hours.
Lin Jian smiled to himself as he ended the call. He couldn’t stop himself from being nervous even though he and Ruby had been together for long enough for him to be certain that she would be overjoyed.
He waited at the gates and soon realized that he was not the only one. The place was filled with men and women dressed up and holding flowers, cards or presents. He looked down at his bouquet and was deflated. If everyone was giving their loved one presents for their last day of campus, what was so special about what he was doing?
He contemplated going back to the car and changed his mind. If Ruby saw all her former classmates receiving gifts, she would be sad if she didn’t get any. Even if she wasn’t surprised or happy, it was much better for her to be neutral about it than sad.
So he waited, ignoring the fact that his bouquet seemed to be the smallest and trying his best not to compare his gift to the extravagant ones he was seeing around. Of course, he could afford the most luxury gifts if he wanted to buy them. But there wasn’t anything special about them either since she could have anything she wanted.
He groaned in frustration.
"Lin Jian?" Her surprised voice pulled him out of his trance.
"Ruby!" He pulled her into his arms excitedly and hugged her tightly. "Congratulations, my love. I missed you so much."
"I missed you too." She kissed him softly on his lips.
He froze when he remembered the flowers he was still holding. He pulled his hand away. Luckily, all the thorns had been removed but unfortunately, he had squashed them out of shape.
He wanted to bury himself in the ground but she didn’t seem to mind.
"Are these for me? Thank you."
"They are ruined." He frowned and reminded himself not to ruin her day just because his surprise wasn’t perfect. "Are you hungry? Let’s go home. I cooked some food for you."
Her stomach nearly grumbled just at the thought of it. He cooked the best meals and his culinary skills had improved a lot over the months. "I can’t wait. Let’s go."
She held his hand excitedly to lead the way to his car. The drive home was longer than usual with the heavy traffic that he wouldn’t have anticipated at this hour. He thought everything would be okay once they were home but he was wrong.
The cake was ruined.
"I’m sorry." Xingyu apologized when he saw Lin Jian’s disappointed expression. "I set it up a moment ago and Linhou..."
"It’s okay." Ruby assured him. She was glad that they had prepared a feast just for her. The cake was still a perfect chibi version of her and the only imperfection was the dent at the side where Linhou had dug in with his hand.
She hugged Lin Jian and kissed his cheek. "I don’t know how to thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me."
He nodded but he was convinced she was only saying that to make him feel better. Even so, he was certain that she enjoyed the food and had fun celebrating.
The evening felt much longer than he hoped for it to be and it was a relief when their friends left. Not that he didn’t want to spend time with them. He did, but he couldn’t get past the ruined surprises. Everything had been going wrong one after another so when it was over, he wanted nothing more than to sleep.
She was tired after an entire week of exams so she hopped into the shower, letting go of all the pent up frustration and tiredness she had felt in the last few months. She finally felt like an actual adult and couldn’t be any readier to get a job.
When she was done, she changed into her pajamas and noticed that Lin Jian had left the room. He had been in bed when she went to the shower so she waited for him for a while and went out to look for him when he didn’t return.
"Lin Jian?" She called into the kitchen and study and living room, and finally heard his voice on the balcony. She walked over and rubbed her arms from the chilly breeze.
"It’s cold. Why are you out here? Are you okay?" She placed a hand on his shoulder gently.
He turned and held her in his arms as he leaned against the railing. "Let’s just say, everything was a mess today."
"What are you saying? I had you with me on my most important day." She countered.
"I wanted to give you a gift you would love. It turned out, I know nothing about anything that’s not flowers and cakes." He laughed at himself before digging into his pockets.
Her eyes widened when he took out a ring.
"So I decided to give you something I would never give anyone else." He smiled nervously at her stunned expression. "I want you to have it."
She was confused as she took the ring from his hand. Why was he giving her a ring if he was not proposing? She accepted it, and it wasn’t long before she found out what kind of ring she was wearing on her necklace. Several gasps from women who saw her up close at the mall the following day and a search was all it took. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
She was still in disbelief when she returned home to find Lin Jian watching a movie.
"Lin Jian, how could you casually give me the Lin family’s heirloom as a gift?"
"What are you talking about? I gave you a ring." He pretended not to know what she meant. She sat on the couch next to him and showed him the search that had come up when she looked the ring up.
"This is the ring your great grandfather used to propose to your great grandmother, isn’t it? It has been passed down to your grandfather and then your father. And you simply gave it to me?"
"Uhm..." He scratched his head awkwardly. "I was hoping you wouldn’t care where it’s from." He confessed. He knew she was the kind to own whatever she liked without caring about its brand, price or history if there was any.
Since he had been caught, he cupped her face in his hands. "Actually, I’ve known for a long time that I wanted you to have it. I have never loved a woman enough to want to share this part of my family with her but the more I get to know you, the more certain I am that I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
She met his gaze with her own shocked one. That wasn’t something she thought she would ever hear from him. Was he still the playboy she once knew?
While she knew that he was no longer a playboy and that he had decided to be in an exclusive long-term relationship with her, it was still unexpected for him to want to share such an important part of his family with her.
"Ruby, would you like to keep it?" He caressed her face. "I promise, it doesn’t have to put you under any kind of pressure."
She chuckled at his implication. Was he that scared of proposing? She had known for a while that he was thinking about it and probably just didn’t know how to go about it.
She grabbed his hand as her lips landed on his. "I’ll take the best care of it."
