Chapter 48 - 047: Don't worry, I'm here.

At the moment Jin Yunzhi turned around, Yu Zhi's fingertips couldn't help but tighten on the straps of her backpack.

Just then, a distinctively jointed hand reached out and touched the zipper of her backpack.

Yu Zhi instinctively pressed down on the hand, turning to the side to look at his eyes, slightly puzzled.

"The zipper came undone." Shi Wei slightly lifted his chin, his gaze landing on the corner of a jacket peeking out through the narrow opening.

Yu Zhi pursed her lips. She quickly zipped it up, and just as she was about to let go of him, Shi Wei reversed his grip, enveloping her hand fully in his palm.

He leaned down close to her ear and murmured softly, "Don't worry, I'm here."

His voice was low and resonant, carrying a kind of gentle warmth akin to the enchanting moonlight and the misty haze of morning, like a feather gently falling into her heart.

"You..." Yu Zhi's emotions were a mix of shock and a peculiar feeling she couldn't quite place.

Her long lashes fluttered like butterfly wings, her delicate face slightly lowered, and the words she wanted to say seemed to get stuck in her throat, unable to form a single syllable.

Outside the door, a group of people was quickly ushered in.

Leading the group was the patriarch of the Meng Family, Meng Zheng. He wore a casual tracksuit with a string of jade beads around his neck. Though his frame was somewhat thin, he exuded a sharp and shrewd demeanor.

Meng Zheng scanned the room discreetly, and as his gaze shifted to the left side, a flicker passed through his eyes.

He first greeted Xu Linchuan, then strode to the left with a smile on his face, saying, "Mr. Shi, long time no see."

His tone carried a sense of familiarity, as though the two had known each other for years.

Shi Wei lifted his eyelids slightly, casting him an indifferent glance. "Who are you?"

The comment was undeniably cutting, yet Meng Zheng's expression remained unfazed. "It's natural for someone as distinguished as you to forget things, Mr. Shi. I understand."

Shi Wei responded with a flat "Hmm," his gaze shifting towards the group of bodyguards behind Meng Zheng, his tone laced with mockery: "Such a grand display—are you here to wreck the place?"

"Of course not," Meng Zheng immediately signaled for the group to step aside before explaining his purpose. "I'm looking for someone."

"Looking for whom?" Xu Linchuan chimed in at this point, raising an eyebrow, suspecting the situation to be more an attempt to stir up trouble than anything else.

Meng Zheng paused momentarily, his expression becoming slightly unnatural, a hint of restrained anger seeping through. "A female repair worker."

In truth, he had been careless. Apart from knowing the person was a woman, he hadn't noted any other distinguishing features.

"A repair worker?" Xu Linchuan chuckled, his eyes tinged with ridicule. "You're going through all this trouble just to find a repair worker?"

"Yes. She's not a typical repair worker."

"And what exactly is she, then?"

"..."

Meng Zheng found himself at a loss for words.

He turned towards Shi Wei. "Mr. Shi, have you come across her today?"

"No," Shi Wei replied dismissively.

Shi Wei's attention was wholly focused on the pair of hands clasped together beneath the table, so much so that he didn't even spare the other man another glance.

Meng Zheng's smile faltered slightly. His gaze shifted to the person beside Shi Wei, patiently asking again, "Miss, have you seen her?"

"No." Yu Zhi shook her head, her clear eyes appearing so pure they seemed to reveal everything at a glance.

Her response was something Meng Zheng didn't doubt in the slightest. Or perhaps he never connected her to the repair worker in the first place.

"Does the repair worker have any distinct characteristics?" Xu Linchuan's professional habit compelled him to ask automatically.

"She's mute." Mentioning this, Meng Zheng couldn't help but furrow his brows slightly.

Known for his sensitivity to sound, it was odd for him to encounter someone mute. If no one had orchestrated the meeting behind the scenes, he simply couldn't believe it.

Xu Linchuan: "..."

His expression seemed to question Meng Zheng's intelligence: "With just one distinguishing feature, you think you'd find her? That's a long shot."

Meng Zheng was rendered speechless by this comment. Glancing at his wristwatch, he said, "I have other matters to attend to, so I'll refrain from further intrusion."

"Not seeing you off," Xu Linchuan waved dismissively, a clear gesture to hurry him out.

At this, Meng Zheng put on an awkward but polite smile, then turned and left without looking back.

"Why do I have a feeling something's off with him?" Jin Yunzhi pointed to his own temple with a finger.

Given his naturally delicate appearance, the gesture made him look exceptionally adorably, causing Yu Zhi's lips to twitch upward ever so slightly.

"You knew something was off, and yet you still let him in?" Xu Linchuan lightly tapped his forehead, sounding as though he was both scolding and lamenting his naivety.

Jin Yunzhi pouted. "He spotted you first and said he wanted to come in and greet you. I thought you two were close."

Xu Linchuan sighed helplessly. "The day you're conned, you'll probably even help count the money."

"..."

The two quibbled back and forth, while Shi Wei turned his head to watch the girl's profile and asked softly, "Have you eaten yet?"

"No." She had rushed over as soon as school let out, not having eaten anything except some candy.

Her response caught Shi Wei off guard. He pressed a button at the side of the table, requesting the waiter to bring some food.

Though Lanting Square primarily focused on tea, it also boasted skilled chefs and mixologists, making it a well-rounded establishment.

From the last meal they had shared, Shi Wei had already learned her preferences. This time, he ordered only her favorite dishes.

"Wow, I want to eat too," Jin Yunzhi stared at the table with wide eyes, swallowing his saliva.

Although he had already had dinner, his stomach let out a rebellious 'growl, growl' at the mouthwatering spread.

"Then join us," Yu Zhi quickly handed him a pair of chopsticks.

Without thinking, Jin Yunzhi took them and said with a smile, "You're so kind."

Seeing him start to eat, Xu Linchuan—feeling equally tempted—uttered the same phrase and successfully acquired his own set of chopsticks.

Fearing the two men might eat too much and leave the girl hungry, Shi Wei ordered more food while sitting by the side, watching them eat.

"By the way, did you encounter anything strange when you went home last night?" Xu Linchuan took a couple of bites and glanced at the person across from him.

Yu Zhi knew what he was referring to and shook her head. "By the time I returned, there were hardly any people left in the complex."

Usually, no matter how late she arrived home, she would see groups of people night jogging, but last night the area was oddly quiet, with only a few men scattered outside.

"Hmm, you still need to be careful." Xu Linchuan started nagging her. "Money can always be earned, but you only have one life. Got it?"

Yu Zhi responded softly, not saying much else. However, Shi Wei—having observed the interaction between the two—seemed restless. "What are you talking about?"

A flicker of dissatisfaction passed through his eyes, though he expertly masked it, leaving no trace of anything amiss.
