Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Making an Enemy

Lin Youning found the two siblings looking at her, and her face turned slightly red. She knew her appearance; even as she grew up, it was still not enough.

Even after living two lifetimes, being stared at like this made her feel uncomfortable all over, though it wasn’t out of shyness.

The outcome was that Xu Ya’an, who had been standing quietly on the little bridge, suddenly rushed down, and the surrounding maids, caught by surprise, exclaimed and rushed forward.

But they were still a step too slow. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

When Lin Youning was heavily pushed to the ground by Xu Ya’an, she was still in a daze, only coming to her senses when Nanny Chang held her in her arms and asked worriedly how she was.

"Nanny, I’m fine." Lin Youning saw Xu Ya’an start crying after pushing her, and despite the pain, she didn’t say much, "Xu, don’t be afraid. I’m fine."

Inwardly, she gave a bitter smile.

Sure enough, children’s jealousy comes quickly.

Xu Yuxian, however, turned pale and, after making sure his crying sister was alright, turned his attention to Lin Youning with concern, "Ning, are you okay? Sister An is used to being willful, please don’t be angry. I apologize to you on her behalf."

Saying this, Xu Yuxian, in a grown-up manner, made a bow to Lin Youning, which amused her, "I’m fine, but do check on Xu. She seems frightened."

In the past life, she met the little tyrant who always had to respectfully call her Madam, now calling her sister.

This was really quite amusing.

Xu Yuxian looked up at Lin Youning, a flash of joy in his eyes, "Ning has a kind heart; surely she will be greatly blessed."

There was laughter.

Nanny Chang and the others, who were still angry, were amused by Xu Yuxian’s words.

Lin Youning also laughed, "Brother Yuxian also often accompanies Madam reading scriptures, I hear. Eldest Brother says a man should be upright. Showing filial piety by staying dutiful is commendable, but don’t neglect your studies for the exams."

"Ning is right." Educated by this, Xu Yuxian made another bow.

The two continued exchanging pleasantries while the ignored Xu Ya’an stopped crying, realizing no one was paying her attention.

Lin Youning glanced sideways, exhaling softly. Indeed, this was a good trick for dealing with spoiled children.

Yet, it was bittersweet thinking of Brother Zong.

Back then, though she gave birth to Brother Zong, he had never cried in front of her, not once, even if he was wronged at the Marquis Mansion, he never mentioned it when he returned.

All of this was because of Kong Tianru and Gu Yixuan.

Her fists clenched involuntarily, and her body grew tense until she heard Xu Yuxian’s concerned voice, reminding her to regain her composure, slightly lowering her head to hide the expression on her face.

The incident in the garden quickly reached Mrs. Gu Sr. and the others. Mrs. Xu Sr. admonished Xu Ya’an on the spot, making Xu Ya’an’s gaze toward Lin Youning even more hostile.

Lin Youning didn’t care; thinking of Brother Zong made her feel listless. To outsiders, she seemed to have suffered grievances and was feeling sorry, making them feel even more sympathetic towards her.

After sending off Mrs. Xu Sr. and her party, Mrs. Gu Sr. held Lin Youning, comforting her for a while. Lin Youning forced a smile to appease Mrs. Gu Sr., before Nanny Chang carried her back to Tingxue Hall to rest.

In the afternoon, Lin Youning took a nap, and upon waking, noticed something was amiss with her body. That fall, which hadn’t seemed like much at first, now had her back hurting so much that she dared not move.

Knowing it was from that fall, she figured a few days’ rest would solve it.

She hadn’t intended to alarm the servants, but as soon as she moved, it became apparent, and Nanny Chang promptly reported it to Mrs. Gu Sr., who came accompanied by Gu Yifeng and his wife.

Gu Yifeng, today, was wearing a crossed-collar dark navy robe embroidered with cloud patterns, walking in with a composed demeanor.

Mrs. Dong trailed two steps behind, in a white underskirt with a subtle bamboo pattern and a simple white jade hairpin, looking elegant and noble.

"What should we do? I suggested calling an Imperial Physician earlier, but you insisted you’re fine. Now see, doesn’t it hurt?" Mrs. Gu Sr. spoke reproachfully, though her face was full of concern.

"Aunt, I’m fine. Just a few days of rest will do." Lin Youning blushed seeing Gu Yifeng was present. She pulled on the underskirt, unwilling to let Mrs. Gu Sr. pull it up.

With such a grown man here, even if she was a five-year-old child now, it still didn’t feel right.

Mrs. Gu Sr. was too anxious to notice, continuing to say, "Quickly, let Aunt see, did it bruise?"

Standing outside the bed, Gu Yifeng and Mrs. Dong understood.

Gu Yifeng’s eyes shifted slightly, a flash of humor passing through them, "I’ll go sit in the green gauze cabinet."

He then retreated out.

Mrs. Dong approached with a smile, "Your eldest brother has left, let mother have a look, sister."

Mrs. Gu Sr. showed a puzzled expression, then understood, gently patting Lin Youning’s bottom, "You little girl, no wonder you’ve been tugging and not letting me look."

Lin Youning’s face turned crimson, "Aunt, I’m a grown girl now."

Her words, in a childish voice, made it all the more amusing.

Even Gu Yifeng, sitting outside in the green gauze cabinet, had a doting smile flash across his face, with a touch of melancholy in his eyes soon after.
