The Noble Lady's Rebirth: She just wants to Rest in Peace!-Chapter 336 - 328: Delivering the Letter
When Lin Youning returned to the main room, she started vomiting. Shanmoi and Hailan were shocked and while calling someone in to clean up the mess, they also asked someone to fetch Nanny Guo.
When Gu Yifeng came in, he saw the chaos in the courtyard. He furrowed his brows and only realized what was happening upon entering, his expression darkened, "What did Madam eat?"
"Only the chrysanthemum cake sent by Miss Dong from the Dong Mansion," Shanmoi replied, her face full of anxiety, "At that time, Miss Dong ate it too and even more than Miss. We thought it would be fine, but who could have known that after seeing her off, Miss started vomiting."
Gu Yifeng’s gaze swept around the room and finally landed on the pastries on the tea table, "Is it that one?"
As soon as Lin Youning came in, she started vomiting, so the pastries had not yet been cleaned up.
Seeing Marquis pointing at the pastries, Shanmoi quickly nodded, "It is that one."
Gu Yifeng had already walked over with large strides, took a pastry, and placed it near his nose. He sniffed it, then took a bite before shaking his head, "The chrysanthemum flavor is too strong."
Gu Yifeng said no more, as Li Si had already taken away the entire plate of pastries. Shanmoi knew that Marquis would naturally investigate the matter, and felt resentment towards Miss Dong, who was obviously treated so well by Miss, yet brought those things over.
Gu Yifeng had already approached the bedside, and the servants quickly stepped aside. Gu Yifeng sat down and held her in his arms, "Bear with it, the more you want to vomit, the more you will."
Lin Youning rinsed her mouth with water, her stomach felt a bit more comfortable, and she leaned against Gu Yifeng’s chest. Knowing that her master was shy, Shanmoi had all the young maids leave the room, allowing Lin Youning to relax.
"It’s nothing, the chrysanthemum flavor is too strong. It seems fine normally, but it feels uncomfortable once it’s in the stomach. It’s much better now, as Sister Yun ate five or six pieces," Lin Youning explained to her big brother, fearing he might worry.
Gu Yifeng took out a handkerchief to wipe her mouth, "If you feel unwell, just lie down. We’ll have a doctor prescribe something to stimulate the stomach later."
Lin Youning blushed slightly, "It’s nothing. Normally, I wouldn’t react like this to food. Perhaps I’m just not used to the strong chrysanthemum flavor."
"Have you received the invitation from Wu Xueqin?" Gu Yifeng’s eyes flickered, but he didn’t say much more, instead changing the topic, "I heard she sent it over again?"
"Yes, I had Shanmoi receive it. Since she invited, I’ll go along to see. Who knows what she wants, but isn’t this what big brother would do too? Since we’re being watched, there’s no need to hide," Lin Youning blinked.
She was obviously feeling much better and more spirited than before.
Gu Yifeng couldn’t help but shake his head, "In the coming days, Mrs. Dong might come to the manor. The Holy Emperor questioned me about conferring the title of Princely Heir to me, which I refused. It should be the Dong Mansion who appealed to the Holy Emperor. Mrs. Dong might come to make trouble for you. If you don’t want to see her, just have the servants send her off."
Lin Youning knew her big brother had his ideas, so she just nodded, "Seems like it’s only a few days until the Mid-Autumn Festival. By then, we should go to Auntie’s place."
Gu Yifeng smiled and nodded, and Lin Youning smiled too.
When Nanny Guo rushed over and heard Marquis was already in the room and that Miss was fine, she was relieved. After inquiring about the incident and hearing it was because of something brought from outside, she scolded Shanmoi and Hailan, then inquired about the pastries. Hearing they had been taken away by Li Si, Nanny Guo nodded and said no more.
Meanwhile, at the Marquis Mansion, Mrs. Dong had also received the invitation. She took it and went to Mrs. Gu Sr., "I heard the invitation was also sent to the main household. I still have Brother Zong to care for, so could you take Sister Hui and others over?"
"Brother Zong?" Mrs. Gu Sr. furrowed her brows.
"Yes, Marquis hasn’t given him a name yet, so I thought of a nickname for now," Mrs. Dong’s smile was full, "What does the Old Madam think? I suddenly thought of this name, and the more I call it, the smoother it feels."
"It’s not good." Mrs. Gu Sr.’s gaze fell on Mrs. Dong calmly, "You’ve been in the manor for years, and I’ve always known you to be steady. Marquis hasn’t named the child yet because there’s a reason. The Gu Family has few descendants. Once a name is decided, it will be placed in the ancestral hall for a month. If the child is healthy and doesn’t fall sick during this time, the name can be used. You should understand this, it was the same when Brother Xuan was named. Why would you hold a grudge over this?"
Mrs. Dong quickly stood up, "Old Madam, you’ve misunderstood. I didn’t mean it that way. I just thought children from poor families often have nicknames, and it helps them thrive."
"Only you know your true intentions," Mrs. Gu Sr. thought of the nickname Brother Zong and was angered in her heart.
Clearly, it was Sister Ning who mentioned using that name for a future child, but Mrs. Dong had used it instead, indicating someone had passed the word to her. Mrs. Gu Sr. despised such betrayal, and hearing Mrs. Dong bring up the naming issue, she seized the chance to vent her anger.
After Mrs. Dong left, Mrs. Gu Sr. looked even more suspicious, "Find out whose loose tongue dared leak the master’s words?"
Suyi quickly responded and withdrew.
Mrs. Gu Sr. felt for Sister Ning’s distress. Sister Ning had always been selfless, only wishing to name a future child. Yet Mrs. Dong wanted to upset Sister Ning over this. Mrs. Gu Sr. recalled when Mrs. Dong mentioned Marquis had intentions towards the main household; she had even spoken to Marquis about it. But now, Mrs. Dong really seemed narrow-minded, and her current behavior felt like a provocation.
Mrs. Gu Sr. knew Mrs. Dong felt emboldened now that she had a legitimate son, even daring to challenge her face-to-face. She couldn’t help but feel angry, wondering how much worse things might become for Sister Ning once she was gone.
Although Lin Youning was at the East Mansion, just after finishing a meal, Shanmoi stormed in full of anger, "Miss, the Marquis Mansion is really overstepping."
Hailan chided her, "Luckily, Marquis isn’t here now. Otherwise, how would he react to your behavior?"
Shanmoi remained indignant, "But they’re going too far. Brother Zong was Miss’s chosen name for a future child, and now their Madam has taken it."
Hailan hadn’t expected this, stunned upon hearing it.
Lin Youning was reading a book, but after hearing Shanmoi’s words, the book in her hand fell onto the bed, "Is this from the Marquis Mansion?"
