The Noble Lady's Rebirth: She just wants to Rest in Peace!-Chapter 332 - 324: Inside Story
Gu Yifeng lay on the bed, thinking about Sister Ning’s complaints, his mind in disarray.
Lin Youning over at the East Mansion didn’t know that Gu Yifeng was sick. After waking up, although the bleeding had stopped, her whole body felt extremely fatigued. Even after eating, she felt powerless.
Lin Youning merely thought it was due to the bleeding over the past few days. After eating, she fell into a deep sleep again. Shanmoi and Hailan felt that something was wrong with the young lady’s condition, prompting even Nanny Guo to worry. She had long since stopped adding sleep-inducing herbs to the young lady’s medicine, yet now it seemed the young lady was becoming increasingly lethargic.
The three of them discussed it and decided it would be best to consult a doctor. This time, Nanny Guo personally went out to find a doctor, seeking out a trusted acquaintance from outside, and finally returned home with an old doctor renowned for his medical expertise.
After feeling her pulse, the old doctor stroked his beard. "Madam, this pulse is quite strange. It seems like pregnancy, yet not quite, perhaps due to a weakened body. This is the first time I’ve encountered such an unusual pulse."
The attendants who were close to her service were all taken aback upon hearing this. Shanmoi and Hailan were both shocked, while Nanny Guo asked, "Could it be poisoning?"
The old doctor shook his head and then nodded, "That’s hard to say. Let me prescribe a few doses to test the situation."
Nanny Guo quickly saw him out, asking a few more questions behind closed doors. The answers were still the same as before, leaving Nanny Guo uncertain.
With the young lady in this state and the Marquis avoiding her, they were at a loss about what to do.
After the doctor left, Shanmoi and Hailan didn’t know what to do but sought advice from Nanny Guo. Nanny Guo shook her head, "Let’s follow the doctor’s prescription for now and see after a few doses."
Both relied on Nanny Guo as their backbone, naturally having nothing more to add and no further ideas, as Lin Youning felt much more alert after taking the medicine that evening.
Nanny Guo didn’t hide the situation and explained it to Lin Youning, who was momentarily stunned before laughing, "Then let’s continue with the medicine for now."
Later that evening, Lin Youning asked Nanny Guo to rest while she lay in bed flipping through a book. Hearing someone enter, she looked up with curiosity and was momentarily dazed upon seeing the visitor, then lowered her head, focusing on the book in hand.
Gu Yifeng wore a white robe and approached the bedside quietly. After sitting down, he said nothing, and the room was so quiet, it seemed as if he had never entered.
Lin Youning couldn’t focus on reading. Her eyes were fixed on the words, but nothing entered her mind.
"I know you blame me in your heart; it’s not as simple as it seems," Gu Yifeng sighed softly. "You’re not pregnant; it’s poisoning. But to outsiders, I let the Imperial Physician say you’re pregnant, intending to see how the poisoner reacts and to draw them out. I didn’t expect it to be true that you’re pregnant and that you had taken several doses of blood-activating medicine. Once I realized, I immediately had the medicine changed and added stabilizing prescriptions, planning to find a chance to explain everything to you. Later, you found out, and I feared your accusing gaze which kept me from coming forward until I could ensure the child was safe, and only then would I explain."
Gu Yifeng was filled with remorse, constantly regretting not protecting Sister Ning enough, harming their child.
Gu Yifeng gently stroked her head. "I originally wanted to discuss this with you, and now it’s like this. Do you blame me?"
Lin Youning couldn’t stop her tears from falling. She was so resentful, but after such an explanation, she couldn’t hold any grudges. She knew he felt worse than she did; how could she blame him?
"Silly girl," Gu Yifeng lowered himself, embracing her. "How can you be so silly?"
Lin Youning grabbed his lapel tightly, "Big Brother... I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have blamed you, and I certainly shouldn’t have doubted you."
"It’s my fault for not protecting you," Gu Yifeng’s eyes were slightly red as he gently patted her back. "Don’t worry, everything will be fine. Haven’t you taken the old doctor’s medicine and felt more spirited lately?" 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"Is that person yours?" Lin Youning was surprised. Clearly, Nanny Guo had arranged it, how could it be Big Brother’s setup?
Gu Yifeng lowered his head and smiled indulgently, "I couldn’t bring someone in directly, so I planned for Nanny Guo to go find someone after the incident, having Li Si arrange it well in advance."
Lin Youning was at a loss for words, but in this ups and downs, she realized this person had taken up residence in her heart, so deeply that it affected her every beat.
Gu Yifeng couldn’t help but cough lightly a few times. Lin Youning looked up worriedly, "Big Brother, are you ill?"
"Just caught a bit of a cold." Gu Yifeng regarded it as a minor illness, though he coughed again.
Lin Youning, concerned, pulled him, "Big Brother should rest as well. You should take care of yourself when you’re sick."
Gu Yifeng looked at her, his eyes narrowing with a smile, "I’m fine. I heard from the doctor that the fetus is stable now. Over the coming days, you should take good care of yourself. As for the poison you took, it’s only a toxin that causes drowsiness and won’t affect the child."
Lin Youning finally relaxed as she had been reluctant to bring this up with Big Brother since he had said he felt worse. With Big Brother’s explanation that covered her worries, she couldn’t help but feel relieved.
The two lay in bed, with Gu Yifeng holding her, "I can’t stay here long. I’ll have to return to the Marquis Mansion while no one notices. But it won’t take many days; I’ll have things investigated clearly and then I’ll come back."
"Big Brother should focus on recuperating first. Now that I know the cause, I understand what to do." Lin Youning didn’t want Big Brother to worry, yet she realized the poisoner must be someone around her.
Lin Youning didn’t want to suspect Shanmoi and Hailan since they had grown up together. If they indeed did such a thing, Lin Youning wouldn’t know who to trust anymore.
Gu Yifeng reminded her a few more times, then after a few more whispers, Gu Yifeng saw that Sister Ning had fallen asleep. He carefully got up, covered her with the quilt, and quietly left.
When Lin Youning woke up the next day, she visibly was more spirited. The others around her noticed it as well, but Lin Youning dared not show it too much for fear of alarming those lurking in the shadows.
