The Noble Lady's Rebirth: She just wants to Rest in Peace!-Chapter 28: Gratitude
In the guest courtyard of Pure Path Temple, when Mrs. Gu Sr. heard from the servants that the old madam of General Xu’s Mansion had arrived, she got up to welcome her.
Mrs. Xu Sr. entered the hall, hand in hand with Mrs. Gu Sr., surrounded by servants. After sitting down, Mrs. Xu Sr. expressed the purpose of her visit, "Where is Sister Ning? I have come especially to thank her. If it weren’t for that child, I might not even be alive today."
Mrs. Gu Sr. looked puzzled, "Elder sister, what do you mean by that?"
Mrs. Xu Sr. then explained how Sister Ning advised her not to return home but to send the servants first. "Originally, I was to return by carriage this morning. But when Zichang came in and told me, I found out that the servants sent back last night encountered bandits. All four guards were lost, leaving only the old servant who has followed me for years."
Mrs. Gu Sr.’s expression changed, "Isn’t Pure Path Temple the National Temple? How could there be bandits nearby?"
"Precisely, no one expected it. Fortunately, I met Sister Ning yesterday, and I avoided the disaster," Mrs. Xu Sr. said with deep emotion. Not seeing Sister Ning yet, she asked, "Where is the child? Why isn’t she here? I felt a connection with her right away, it’s rare that such a child would naturally feel close to me."
"The child was frightened last night and just woke up. I have sent someone to call her," Mrs. Gu Sr. could see that she genuinely came to see the little sister and did not block her any longer, revealing the truth.
"What a shame the child suffered so. How is she now? If she’s just awakened, let her rest, I should go and see her myself," said Mrs. Xu Sr. as she stood up, "Is the child resting in the inner room?"
Mrs. Gu Sr. and Mrs. Xu Sr. used to be quite close. However, after all the men in Gu Mansion passed away, Mrs. Gu Sr. rarely went out, and their contact gradually diminished.
But both families were military generals, and their feelings were different from those of civil officials.
"It’s rare that the child caught your eye." Mrs. Gu Sr. had Suyi go in to check, then led Mrs. Xu Sr. into the inner room.
Inside, Lin Youning had just finished dressing with the help of Nanny Chang and a few others. When she saw Mrs. Gu Sr. enter, the servants hurriedly paid respects, and Lin Youning also quickly stood and greeted obediently, "Aunt, grandmother."
"Oh dear, how did you suffer like this? Look, just one night and your face has grown thinner," Mrs. Xu Sr. quickly stepped forward to help her fragile body up, "Come in quickly, still acting so formal with your grandmother."
"Didn’t grandmother return to the mansion today?" Lin Youning smiled sweetly, her face immediately blooming with two dimples, making her look joyful to others.
Knowing the reason, Lin Youning pretended not to know, looking at the other with innocent eyes.
Mrs. Gu Sr. chuckled, "Alright, the old madam came to see you, and you’re still being so cheeky. Why not let her sit? Or do you intend to speak while standing?"
Lin Youning’s face blushed shyly, "Aunt is right, I forgot."
"It’s not the child’s fault." Mrs. Xu Sr. genuinely liked Lin Youning, so she wouldn’t be upset.
Once they sat on the small couch by the window, Wenxin and the others served tea and refreshments and stepped aside. Mrs. Xu Sr. took off a green gemstone bracelet from her wrist and handed it to Lin Youning, "I’ve worn this for many years, today I’m giving it to Sister Ning. Keep it as a personal token."
