Chapter 106: Chapter 105: Informing

Xu Kuan furrowed his eyebrows, though he disagreed with his daughter’s decision, he understood that it conformed to etiquette. Without displaying any discontent on his face, he simply advised everyone to be safe and then left.

Xu Ya’an heard that Lin Youning was planning to go to the riverside outside the city and laughed, "Sister Lin probably doesn’t know that because of today’s incident, everyone has already returned to their own residences. I also just came back from the riverside, and there was no one there. Luckily you met me, otherwise, Sister Lin would have made a wasted trip."

Lin Youning smiled and thanked her, "Since that’s the case, let’s return to the mansion. However, I must trouble Sister An again. Upon arrival, I’ll have someone from the mansion use a carriage to take you back."

According to protocol, Xu Ya’an should call her Aunt, considering the seniority difference. Yet she addressed her as sister, which Lin Youning found puzzling.

"That would be good too." Xu Ya’an replied with a smile. As the two walked towards East Market, Xu Ya’an constantly sized up Lin Youning.

Lin Youning maintained her composure but sighed inwardly at the missed opportunity to return to the Lin Mansion, uncertain when another chance would arise.

Xu Ya’an sent her maid away, "Go and see if anyone nearby is selling snacks, buy some and come back. I’ll walk slowly with Sister Lin and wait for you up ahead."

The little maid curtsied and left.

Xu Ya’an then earnestly looked at Lin Youning, "Sister Lin, aren’t you curious why I call you sister?"

Lin Youning shook her head, "You must have your reasons for addressing me this way, Sister An."

Xu Ya’an smiled, but there was a hint of mockery and helplessness in it, "Sister Lin, did you know my brother likes you?"

Seeing Lin Youning’s astonished expression, Xu Ya’an smiled, "I guessed that you didn’t know. The day you came to our mansion for the flower feast, my brother even said he sent you a letter. Did you not receive it?"

This time, Lin Youning’s mouth was agape in surprise.

"After hearing what my brother said, I scolded him for being foolish. How could such a letter possibly reach you? Even though my brother tends to be unruly normally, he becomes muddle-headed when it comes to someone he likes."

"Now my brother is engaged to Sister Wu, and the engagement is set for the first of February. He regrets writing you that letter, fearing it would bring trouble to you, Sister Lin. Since we met today, I wanted to ask you and hope you can tell me honestly, did you receive that letter? If you did, it would set my brother’s mind at ease and stop him from living in agony."

Lin Youning quietly listened to her and didn’t deceive her, "I didn’t receive the letter, but I already guessed whose hands it might be in. You can tell your brother not to worry about it anymore."

No wonder that time when my older brother asked if anything happened at the Xu Mansion, moreover, that day he had also gone to the Marquis Mansion. It seems he received the letter, right?

For some reason, Lin Youning breathed a sigh of relief.

In truth, she felt reassured knowing her older brother had the letter. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

But Xu Yuxian liking her and sending her a letter, it all sounded like a story.

"By the way, does Wu Xueya know about your brother’s letter-writing?" Lin Youning suddenly grasped what happened at the Wu Mansion.

Wu Xueya must know, even believing that she likes Xu Yuxian too.

Then she could use this, calculating that after receiving the letter, she would certainly go.

Xu Ya’an thought she was worried and scoffed softly, "Rest assured, nobody knows about this matter. Apart from me and my brother, I’m also saying this after my brother kept being gloomy every day, asking him again and again was the only way he confessed, hoping I could help him."

But before she could help her brother, matters with Wu Xueya were already settled.

Her always proud brother who never bowed to anyone, bowed to her; Xu Ya’an was greatly shocked, never imagining her brother fancied Lin Youning.

She advised her brother not to plunge any deeper, but he was already consumed by it. The siblings had grown up without a mother, relying on each other, and since her brother was like this now, how could she bear to refuse him?

She even made the worst plans, that if Lin Youning liked her brother, she would, by any means, help her brother fulfill his wish.

"At the birthday feast at Minister Wu’s Mansion, a little maid ran over saying your brother wrote me a letter. At the time, I was perplexed, while the maid did leave after handing over the letter, I also left it lying on the ground and walked off." Lin Youning believed Xu Ya’an was intelligent enough that just saying this was sufficient.

Xu Ya’an opened her mouth wide in astonishment, standing still and staring at Lin Youning, "Is what you said true?"

Lin Youning looked at her seriously, "I have no reason to lie to you."

Xu Ya’an bit her lip tightly.

Lin Youning gave a bitter smile from the heart.

After all, she was just a child in her teens, though earlier she appeared composed, at a slight complication she seemed flustered.

"Your maid is coming back too, let’s go." Lin Youning saw from afar someone running back, holding two skewers of meatballs, which reminded her of Xu Kuan, and she couldn’t help but smile.

Xu Ya’an lowered her head, "Yes, it’s late and people at home would be worried."

In the end, Lin Youning took back the meatballs that the little maid bought, though Xu Mansion personnel had already been sent out everywhere to find people, and guards were standing by the gate to welcome the girls as they returned. Upon seeing the girls back, word was passed inside while Xu Ya’an was invited to the courtyard.

Xu Ya’an said it was too late, and since their two residences were only a few streets apart, she’d visit another day. Lin Youning didn’t insist on keeping her, and called for the mansion’s guards to escort her home, before heading to Shi’an Garden.

When Lin Youning returned to Shi’an Garden, Mrs. Gu Sr. had already come out from the Warm Pavilion. If it wasn’t for Suyi persuading her, she would have long gone out to welcome her.

"Miss is finally back, the old madam was anxious enough to almost go look herself." Suyi approached to take the meatballs from Lin Youning’s hands.

Lin Youning thanked them and quickly reached Mrs. Gu Sr.’s side, "Aunt, it’s all my fault, I worried you again."

"As long as you’re unharmed, that’s all that matters, that’s all that matters. Are you cold? Hurry inside." Mrs. Gu Sr. tightly held Lin Youning’s hand, as if afraid she might get lost.

Lin Youning’s nose tingled slightly, "Yes, let’s go inside."

Though she was a child bride, Aunt truly cherished her.

Once inside the Warm Pavilion and barely seated, upon hearing the news, Gu Er returned with big strides, "Sister Ning is back?"

"What kind of behavior is this, shouting like that? Isn’t she back now?" Mrs. Gu Sr. reproached her son, "All this is your doing. I entrusted her to you, yet you lost her. How can I let you take Sister Ning out again in the future?"

Seeing she was indeed back and unharmed, Gu Er laughed with relief, "It was my fault entirely, this incident alone is enough to make me regret to death; how dare I let it happen again. Even without mother scolding me, my conscience can’t rest easy."
