Chapter 101: Chapter 100: News Received

Lin Youning nodded. Ever since Big Brother came in, she glanced at him just once, having no face to engage with him in such matters.

After coming out of Shi’an Garden with Mrs. Dong, she held Lin Youning’s hand, "Sister Ning, don’t worry about anything, the Marquis Mansion will back you up in all matters."

Lin Youning nodded, "Thank you, Sister-in-law."

Mrs. Dong nodded, then left with her people. Lin Youning returned to her Warm Pavilion, dismissed everyone, and sat alone on the soft couch, lost in thought.

Mrs. Dong harbored resentment toward her.

Those weren’t words of concern but rather telling her that this is the Marquis Mansion, and whatever she does should not involve the Mansion.

Lin Youning smiled. Earlier, Aunt was blunt in criticizing Mrs. Dong, so how could she not be angry?

Thinking about it, she’s somewhat of an orphan, Mrs. Dong must’ve also felt wronged over the years, and now these few words were likely to make her understand her place.

Outside, Shanmoi angrily told Hailan about the situation, "Can you believe things are like this? But the Marquis cared for our young lady, directly instructing the eldest son to stop attending school in the future."

Hailan was also indignant, "That’s more like it."

At Shi’an Garden, Gu Chaoxuan was still kneeling on the ground, with no one calling him or paying him any attention.

Inside the main room, Mrs. Gu Sr. had a worried look on her face, "Sister Ning is grown now, so after her coming-of-age next year, let’s handle her and Old Er’s matters. I’ve taught her to manage shops and estates over the years, she’s capable of managing on her own. Besides, the older she gets, the more awkward her status in the residence becomes. She was pitiful from her youth, and though I’ve pampered her, I don’t want her to be increasingly distressed as she gets older."

"Alright, this won’t happen again, you needn’t worry too much about it." Gu Yifeng didn’t say much.

Mrs. Gu Sr. thought of the one kneeling in the courtyard, "I find it an eyesore, take him back. Right now, ensure the servants are warned not to spread this matter. Despite having such descendants being unfortunate for the family, keeping it within the family is right."

"Understood." Gu Yifeng proceeded to take Gu Chaoxuan away.

Such a major event occurred in the courtyard, there’s no way Mrs. Kong wouldn’t know, but despite inquiries, nothing could be discovered — the more peculiar the matter seemed.

Mrs. Kong hadn’t yet found out, Gu Er returned, heard about it upon arriving, thought for a bit, then went to Shi’an Garden.

Mrs. Gu Sr. didn’t hide from him; upon hearing, Gu Er jumped up, "Can such a thing happen? This scoundrel, I’m going to find him now."

"Stand still," Mrs. Gu Sr. shouted, "If I weren’t afraid you’d misunderstand Sister Ning upon finding out someday, I wouldn’t tell you. Now that your big brother has punished Brother Xuan, consider the matter resolved. Don’t pursue it further, and neither mention it to your wife, saving Sister Ning future trouble."

"She dares." Gu Er widened his eyes.

"Of course, she dares. If a woman were to share a man with me, I’d dare too." Mrs. Gu Sr. fixed her gaze on her son, "Sister Ning is soft in nature, ensure she doesn’t suffer grievances in the future."

Gu Er blushed, "Rest assured, mother, I’ve always treated Sister Ning as a sister and wouldn’t let her be wronged."

Mrs. Gu Sr., aware of preserving her son’s dignity, pretended not to notice his blush and waved her hand, "Alright, I’m tired too, you can leave now. By the way, go to the Buddhist Hall and offer incense for me later."

Gu Er agreed. As he was leaving, Mrs. Gu Sr. seemed to recall something, "Oh, don’t bother Sister Ning for now, she’s not in a good mood and isn’t inclined to speak with you."

Gu Er appeared wronged, "I wanted to check on her, but mother makes it sound like I’m inconsiderate. Am I truly your child or is Sister Ning?"

"You’re ten years old and still jealous, truly I’ve spoiled you." Mrs. Gu Sr. was amused by her son, "When will Brother De be home? He’s in the same academy as Brother Xuan, isn’t he? By rights, he should return together, yet he’s nowhere to be seen."

"Having heard about trouble at home, I arrived immediately, haven’t returned to the courtyard, I’ll check now." Gu Er replied with a smile.

As soon as he walked out, his face grew dark, instructing Tang Ping beside him, "Check if the Second Young Master has returned. If he has, have him go to Shi’an Garden to pay respects to Mrs. Gu Sr."

Mentioning his son irritated Gu Er slightly.

The son never seemed close to Shi’an Garden, and didn’t come to greet upon return more than once. Today with mother pointing it out, Gu Er’s face held no honor.

Meanwhile, at Jinghe Courtyard, Mrs. Kong engaged her son in conversation, heard Tang Ping had arrived, smiled and invited him in, though upon hearing Tang’s words, her smile became strained, hurriedly having him sent out.

Mrs. Kong scoffed, "See that? They had him come to give respects, yet you’re the only legitimate male heir in the residence, and Mrs. Gu Sr. doesn’t care for closeness, only dotes on the outsider."

Gu Chaode and Sister Yue are twins, both ten years old, though don’t resemble much. Gu Chaode, being a boy, appears more mature.

After hearing Tang’s message, and Tang departing, he drank tea without glancing up at his mother’s words.

Mrs. Kong, anxious, said, "Child, won’t you speak? Haven’t seen each other all year, not a word for your mother?"

"So what if I’m legitimate? Dingyuan Marquis is just my uncle." Gu Chaode stood irritably, "I’ll go offer respects to grandmother now."

Watching her son stride away, Mrs. Kong bit her lip, remaining silent.

Once young master left, Nanny Chi approached to advise, "Madam, young master’s action is correct, entering the residence one should first greet Mrs. Gu Sr. She never spoke it, but her heart expects it, rumors at Duke Mansion..."

"Rumors, so what? Duke Mansion never cared for me all these years?" Mrs. Kong’s eyes reddened, "Had they supported me as their daughter, would my days at Marquis Mansion be so cautious, constantly watching faces? Named grandly as Second Madam, yet behind who knows what mockery goes on."

Nanny Chi fretted internally; Duke Mansion never supported her, due to her own disruptions, yet she blamed others.

But as merely a servant, couldn’t state it plainly.

Picking comforting words instead, she sent word to Duke Mansion, wishing they’d manage her a bit.

This past year has her increasingly agitated.
