The Mute Wife Who Brings Prosperity-Chapter 619 - 585: Picking Up a Son (Third Update)
"What’s the matter?" Song Wei’s mature and handsome face was hidden in the dim light, not easily discernible. His voice was low and magnetic, quite capable of tugging at one’s heartstrings at night.
Nanny Qin said, "I’ve been at the residence for quite some time, but haven’t sent anything home yet. I packed everything to send during the day, but found a letter missing. I can’t read. Could I trouble you, sir, to write a letter for me?"
Song Wei squinted slightly, "Is it urgent?"
Nanny Qin nodded, "I’ve already arranged for someone to leave early tomorrow morning."
Song Wei nodded, "At this hour, there’s still a woman at the second gate who hasn’t rested, as well as the two Attendant Students, Duan Yan and Hui Ink, in the outer yard, and the doorman. They all know how to write; you can ask any one of them."
"Ah?" Surprised by Song Wei’s response, Nanny Qin was momentarily stunned, realizing her slip-up. She broke out in a cold sweat and quickly said, "Thank you, sir."
Watching Song Wei’s tall and straight figure enter the main room, Nanny Qin secretly clenched her fingers and sighed, having no choice but to ask the woman at the second gate for help writing the letter.
Although Song Wei entered the room quietly, Wen Wan still sensed it. She lay on her side with her back to him, keeping her eyes closed.
When the man turned off the light and got on the bed, she opened her eyes in the dim light, took a deep breath, and slowly spoke, "Husband, was the lunch I prepared for you today tasty?"
Song Wei naturally reached out to tuck her in, "It’s so late, why aren’t you sleeping?"
"Answer my question." Wen Wan mumbled softly.
Song Wei relit the lamp, smiling at her, "Talking about food so late at night, are you hungry?"
Wen Wan said nothing, her clear eyes reflecting the warm glow of the light, along with his silhouette.
The two gazed at each other.
After a while, Song Wei was the first to give in, recalling how he had been overwhelmed by the spiciness at lunch, leaving him helpless yet amused. His eyes softened, "What do you want to say?"
Wen Wan sat up, wrapped her arms around his neck, "Do you know why I punished you?"
"I don’t know." Song Wei cooperatively shook his head.
"Who told you to go to the bookroom as soon as night falls? Can’t you read those books during the day? Even if you’re busy during the day, can’t you read in my room at night?"
So that was the reason after all.
Song Wei initially wanted to remove her hand, but ultimately just held her slender wrist, nodding slightly, "Alright, whatever you say."
He was used to reading in the bookroom because it was quiet. It’s not that he couldn’t read in her room, but with her there, he was easily distracted.
"That’s more like it." Wen Wan leaned closer to him, smiling with her eyes, "If you prefer the bookroom, it’s fine; you can continue enjoying the special dishes I’ve prepared for you every other day."
Song Wei was afraid of spicy food, especially after arriving in the capital, his taste had become increasingly mild. The sudden spiciness today seemed to still burn within him.
He originally thought the cooks made a mistake with the seasoning out of drowsiness, only to find out it was Wen Wan’s instruction.
Retrieving her hand, Wen Wan moved back to her position, lay down, and blinked at him, "Today I gave Nanny Qin a set of robes I used to love. She’s petite, should look better in them than I do."
Song Wei murmured a response, "If you like that color, you can have another made."
Wen Wan asked, "Didn’t you see her wearing it?"
"I saw."
"Does it look good?"
Song Wei nodded, "The clothes look good."
After speaking, his deep gaze lingered on her small face, "Up so late, are these the trivial things occupying your mind?"
Wen Wan protested, "I’m just a simple housewife in the inner quarters, unable to hold the affairs of the nation in my heart, only filled with beautiful clothes and jewelry."
"Is there nothing else beyond that?"
Feigning confusion, Wen Wan asked, "What else do you expect?"
Song Wei chuckled lightly, "I’m getting old, can’t match your wits. It’s late, get some sleep."
Wen Wan shook her head, "I can’t sleep."
Song Wei didn’t force her, "What’s still on your mind? Tell me, I’ll listen."
"I was thinking, who was it that sent Wang Xiaolang initially?" Wen Wan said, "They claimed to extort you, but left without getting a single coin, and since then, there’s been no news. I don’t even know if he’s alive or dead."
Mentioning Wang Xiaolang, Song Wei recalled that day at the inn, after letting him go, he ordered Wei Qian to follow discreetly, only to lose him.
Song Wei knew Wei Qian’s level as a Hidden Guard, having never failed any task before.
Yet this time, they lost track of a living person, which led Song Wei to suspect that someone else, a master, had intervened to help Wang Xiaolang escape.
In this light, Wang Xiaolang seemed more like a probing stone, thrown out to test the waters for a bigger plan to follow.
