The Monster Monarch System-Chapter 235: The Lava Guardian
The dungeon stretched before him, shifting in ways that defied nature itself.
What had once been a stone-carved corridor with stone guardians now opened into something far more treacherous.
A sea of molten lava bubbled ahead, its intense heat distorting the air.
The cavern walls glowed with a deep, ominous red, cracks running along the surfaces like veins of fire. The very air was suffocating, thick with the scent of burning rock.
Rem stood at the edge of the infernal lake, arms crossed as he assessed the situation.
The lava churned, swallowing the remains of broken platforms and debris like a living beast.
There was no clear path forward — no bridges, no stepping stones, nothing but an endless expanse of liquid fire.
Lava to be exact.
But Rem didn’t hesitate.
With a sharp motion, he raised his hand, and a surge of soul energy pulsed through the air.
The space before him shimmered, and in a flash of brilliant green light, a massive creature materialized.
A bird — no, something far greater.
Its wings were vast, almost translucent in the dim glow of the dungeon, yet lined with emerald feathers that seemed to pulse with raw energy.
Its talons dug into the stone, leaving deep indentations as its sharp, intelligent eyes locked onto Rem.
[Verdant Gale.]
One of the monsters he had absorbed during his journey.
Rem wasted no time.
He stepped forward, gripping onto the beast’s back as it lowered itself slightly, allowing him to climb on with ease.
With a powerful beat of its wings, the creature lifted off, sending gusts of wind scattering dust and embers across the cavern.
They soared above the lake of fire.
The heat below was overwhelming, even from this height. Waves of molten rock rolled and swelled, bursting occasionally in violent sprays of flame.
Rem narrowed his eyes as they neared the other side, keeping his senses sharp.
Something wasn’t right.
The air shifted.
Then —
BOOM!
A massive figure erupted from the lava, sending molten rock flying in all directions.
Rem’s gaze snapped downward, and his instincts flared.
It wasn’t just another guardian.
This one was different.
A Lava Guardian.
Four massive arms stretched out from its body, each one rippling with sheer strength. Its form was carved from black volcanic rock, its body pulsing with veins of molten lava.
But what stood out the most was its lack of weapons.
It didn’t need them.
As the guardian raised its arms, the lava below began to churn violently.
Rem tensed.
Then —
WHOOSH!
A wave of lava shot up, twisting into massive tendrils, striking toward him with terrifying speed.
"Dodge!"
Verdant Gale banked sharply, diving to avoid the attack. The molten tendrils barely missed, but the sheer heat seared through the air, forcing Rem to grit his teeth.
The guardian wasn’t finished.
It slammed one of its massive hands into the lava, and suddenly, the sea itself reacted.
Flaming pillars burst forth, rising into the sky like volcanic geysers, cutting off possible escape routes. The beast was controlling the battlefield itself.
Rem exhaled. "This thing is going to be a pain."
The Lava Guardian roared, its deep voice shaking the cavern as another wave of molten attacks surged toward him.
But this time, Rem was ready.
"Dive!"
Verdant Gale obeyed, twisting downward at an impossible angle, narrowly slipping through the closing gaps between the rising pillars of flame.
The sudden drop sent a rush of air against Rem’s face, but he kept his balance, his gaze locked onto the guardian below.
They weren’t going to run.
He was going to end this.
"Get me close," he ordered.
The Monster responded instantly, wings adjusting mid-flight as they shot toward the guardian.
The creature, realizing what was happening, raised its arms again.
More lava surged upward, forming into massive, jagged spears. With a single motion, it launched them straight at Rem.
He reacted instantly.
With a flick of his wrist, a pulse of soul energy radiated outward, forming a barrier just as the molten spears reached him.
BOOM!
The impact shook the air, but the shield held.
Barely.
Rem narrowed his eyes. He couldn’t just sit back and defend — he had to go on the offensive.
He clenched his fist, and soul energy surged through his body. With a deep inhale, he focused, channeling his power into his arms.
The energy crackled around him, condensing into something far more potent.
Then — he jumped.
He launched himself straight from Verdant Gale’s back, propelling toward the guardian like a comet of raw power.
The Lava Guardian raised its arms to defend —
Too late.
Rem’s fist connected with the creature’s chest, the force of his punch sending a shockwave through its entire body.
The impact created a deep crater in its molten form, and the glow of its lava veins flickered violently.
The creature roared in pain, but Rem wasn’t done.
Using the recoil from his first strike, he twisted mid-air, bringing his heel crashing down on its shoulder.
Another explosion of force rocked the cavern, and the guardian staggered, its body cracking under the sheer impact.
But it still wasn’t falling.
Rem exhaled sharply. "You’re a tough one."
The guardian’s molten core pulsed violently, its body attempting to regenerate.
Rem narrowed his eyes.
’Then I’ll just have to break you faster than you can recover.’
With a final burst of energy, he flipped backward, landing atop Verdant Gale as it swooped in just in time to catch him. He steadied himself, then raised his palm.
A surge of energy gathered at his fingertips — this time, more concentrated, more refined.
The Lava Guardian saw the attack coming, its glowing eyes widening.
It tried to raise its arms, to call upon the lava again —
But it was too slow.
Rem unleashed the attack.
A massive beam of pure soul energy erupted from his palm, piercing straight through the guardian’s chest.
The force of the attack sent cracks racing along its entire body, its molten veins flickering violently — before finally, with one last agonized roar, the creature exploded into a shower of shattered rock and dying embers.
Silence.
The lava below rippled, settling once more. The heat in the cavern slowly began to fade, as if the dungeon itself was acknowledging his victory.
Rem exhaled, rolling his shoulders.
"Annoying."
Verdant Gale let out a sharp cry, as if in agreement.
The battle was over.
But Rem knew better.
