Chapter 232: Into The Abyss

The cave was eerily silent, save for the heavy breathing of those inside.

The walls were rough and damp, jagged edges forming uneven shadows in the dim light of the cave. Though they had found temporary shelter, none of them felt truly safe.

The air was thick with the lingering presence of monsters, their erratic movements still echoing in their minds. There was fear in the air and it wasn’t going to be resolved while that Dungeon gate was still around.

Luke and Kiara sat near the back, their hands still gripping their weapons, adrenaline refusing to let them relax.

Kiara had her dagger resting on her thigh, absently tracing its edge, while Luke stared at the ground with a blank expression, deep in thought.

The adventurers weren’t much better off.

Lila was pacing, her fingers clenched tightly around her staff. Markus was clutching his wounded arm, wincing as he wrapped it in cloth, while Toren cleaned his blade with slow, deliberate movements.

The rest of them simply sat in exhaustion, their eyes darting toward the entrance, half-expecting another monster to lunge through at any moment.

Then there was Rem. He stood at the mouth of the cave, his back turned to them. His breathing was calm, too calm, considering the chaos they had just fought through. Well he was an experienced Veteran after all but the Adventurers had no idea what exactly he was.

"This isn’t normal," Lila muttered, breaking the silence. "Dungeon breaks happen, sure, but not like this. This feels... wrong."

"It’s because it is," Rem finally spoke, his voice low and firm. "This isn’t just a dungeon break. Something else is stirring in that dungeon. Something that shouldn’t be here."

His words sent a chill through the group.

Luke frowned, glancing up at him. "You mean the dungeon itself is acting strange?"

Rem nodded, turning slightly so they could see his expression. His crimson eyes glowed faintly in the dim light.

"Monsters don’t just go berserk like this. Even in a dungeon break, they stick to their nature. But these ones... they were different. Stronger. More aggressive. Something is pushing them beyond their limits."

Markus let out a shaky breath. "That’s not exactly reassuring."

"It’s not meant to be."

A heavy silence settled over the group again before Rem turned fully to face them. His presence was suffocating, his expression unreadable.

"I’m going to check it out," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.

Luke shot up. "Wait — what?"

"You heard me."

"That’s crazy," Kiara added. "You saw how strong those monsters were. If even you think this is something worse, why would you go alone?"

Rem cracked his knuckles absently. "Because I need to know what we’re dealing with. Sitting here guessing won’t do us any good."

Lila shook her head. "Then let us come with you. We — "

"No."

The air grew heavier with that one word. His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried a weight that made everyone fall silent.

He exhaled, his fingers flexing at his sides. "You all need to stay here. You’re exhausted. You’d only slow me down."

Luke clenched his fists. "That’s not — "

Rem’s gaze locked onto him. "That’s the truth."

Luke’s mouth snapped shut.

Rem looked at the adventurers next. "Keep the kids safe."

Toren frowned. "And if we get attacked again?"

"Hold your ground until I get back."

Something about the way he said it made it sound less like a command and more like a guarantee. As if no matter what happened, he would return.

The adventurers exchanged uneasy glances but ultimately nodded.

With that settled, Rem turned and walked toward the mouth of the cave.

Nobody tried to stop him this time.

The moment he stepped outside, he rolled his shoulders, tilting his head slightly as his neck cracked.

His body had been itching for a proper fight.

Taking a slow breath, he let his soul energy rise, wrapping around him in a slow, controlled burn.

The air trembled slightly at the sheer force of it, and in the next instant —

He vanished.

The wind screamed as he shot forward, his body a blur of movement through the darkened forest. The trees whipped past him, barely registering in his mind as his focus sharpened.

He followed the pulse of irregular energy, letting it guide him like a beacon.

The deeper he went, the more he felt it — the raw, unstable force that clung to the very air. It was wrong. It twisted and churned, unnatural in every way.

His lips curled into a smirk. "Yeah. Definitely not normal."

It didn’t take long before he saw the first sign of something worse.

The bodies of monsters littered the ground.

Some had been ripped apart, their flesh torn as though something had exploded from within them. Others were barely recognizable, melted into blackened husks.

Rem’s eyes narrowed.

A rustling sound caught his attention.

Without hesitation, he sidestepped just as a shadow lunged at him from the treetops. A massive beast, larger than any of the ones they’d fought earlier, crashed into the ground where he’d stood just moments before.

Its body was covered in pulsing black veins, and its eyes glowed red with pure, unfiltered madness.

Rem’s smirk widened.

"Finally."

The beast roared and charged.

Rem didn’t move until the last second, sidestepping with an effortless grace before slamming his fist into its side.

The impact sent a shockwave through the air, and the creature was thrown backward, crashing through the trees.

It wasn’t dead. But it was close.

Before it could get up, Rem blurred forward, his hand glowing with concentrated soul energy. In one swift motion, he drove his palm straight into the beast’s skull.

A sickening crack echoed through the forest, and the creature went limp.

He pulled his hand back, flexing his fingers.

"That was barely a warm-up."

He absorbed the Monster’s soul and felt himself grow stronger/

His gaze turned ahead, toward the direction of the dungeon’s gate, he needed to know... he wanted to know... and he was going to conquer it.
