The Military Queen-Chapter 105 - 78: Pity the Fragrant and Cherish the Fair (Part 2)
Number 0 stopped, raised her head, and noticed the fish-belly white appearing on the horizon. The figure in a blue-black military uniform was particularly conspicuous against the backdrop.
It seemed that she suddenly didn’t dislike this bald man as much; he appeared to be quite loyal. The words he blurted out seemed to have been asked to her many years ago.
"What am I thinking about," Number 0 sighed, and quickly followed.
When they reached outside the city walls, the gates were not yet open. The morning light sprinkled on the moss clinging to the walls, dotted with dew.
"We need to figure out a way to settle her," standing at the base of the city wall, Number 0 started to worry. The prices at the inns within Babylon City were astonishingly high, and she had to go offline in two days. How to arrange for the Purple-clothed woman became a big problem. Was it really okay to "credit-buy" a person and then just abandon her?
"I still suggest we take her back to the temple," Yijie’s idea was much simpler. Given their current abilities, it was impossible to find suitable accommodation in Babylon City. Only those who had made outstanding contributions could settle property in the city, unfortunately, neither he nor Number 0 met this requirement.
"I’ve already said..." Number 0 was trying her patience, suddenly, she saw the woman standing behind Yijie showing some movement, even though it was only for a brief moment, she could tell, the woman’s breathing frequency had changed.
"Let’s just take her to the temple," Number 0 changed her mind instantly. To show her intention, she moved to Yijie’s side, helping to hold up the woman so he could better carry her towards the temple.
"No..." the woman lying on Yijie’s body spoke out, her eyes, which had not been opened for a long time, suddenly opened. The woman had woken up when she first rolled out of the box.
Before she could verify the identity of these two strangers, she dared not speak. The woman’s voice was still very weak. Yijie’s judgment was not wrong; she had suffered a severe spiritual attack, and at this moment, her consciousness was only vaguely present.
However, the surviving will inside her brought her immediately to alert upon hearing about the temple. "I can’t go back, they will kill me," the cross scar on the woman’s face, which had healed, turned bright red and even more terrifying due to her agitation.
Yijie put down the woman, took out some dry food and water from his military bag, and handed it to the woman.
Number 0 took the food and shared half with the Purple-clothed woman, unabashedly taking care of the rest herself.
After replenishing some nutrition, the Purple-clothed woman’s pale cheeks gained some color.
"Thank you for saving me," the Purple-clothed woman’s gratitude brought a roll of the eyes from Number 0. The money was hers, the credit was hers, and the collateral was hers too. Yijie merely had a strong set of shoulders, yet he received thanks for no reason.
"No need to thank me, she was the one in heavy debt to save you. It’s already dawn, and I escorted you both here, so it should be safe. If there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving," Yijie’s face, as stoic as a statue, showed no extra emotion.
At that moment, the city gate had opened, and the moaning sound of the opening gate, as it just opened to half, muddled people’s hearts and ears.
The Purple-clothed woman lowered her eyes, murmuring to herself, her voice sounding like the ding-dong of spring water in the mountains, the noisy sound from the opening gate drowned in her low whispers.
Her murmurs, at first hearing, seemed like the usual chanting of the Buddhist Sutra, and her mental state also changed during the murmurs.
Sleepless fatigue and weariness, like mist meeting the sun, slowly dissipated. The sun had not fully risen yet, but it felt like basking in warm sunlight, not anxious or agitated, all unease and suspicions cleaned away.
"God’s heart is not dead, it shall be with me," the Purple-clothed woman knelt down, devoutly dropping to her knees in front of Number 0, prostrated on the ground, performing a grand gesture of worship.
(Was she?) Even Little Eight in front of Number 0 felt a stable mood, as if basking in the spring breeze.
"Aren’t you a holy... are you the Goddess of the temple?" The woman’s eyes had turned snowy white during her murmurs, completely white. After she finished her whispering, her eyes turned to one black and one white.
"From the moment I no longer followed the Divine Decree, I ceased to be a goddess," the murmurs of the Purple-clothed woman not only largely restored her own spiritual power but also benefited Number 0 and Yijie.
"Then who is the goddess in the temple?" Who was the Apoli Goddess who looked and acted like a banished fairy in the temple that Number 0 saw last night? Why did the Purple-clothed woman end up in the hands of the Dark Night Market?
Number 0 linked the events from the past half day and night together, from the half-masked woman, to following the hint to the temple, then to hearing the whistle at midnight in the forest, encountering this victimized Goddess; in these events, there seemed to be an unseen thread tying them all together.
The Purple-clothed woman opened her mouth slightly, but didn’t make any further sound, her bi-colored eyes showing pain.
Yijie frowned and walked away without a word.
Number 0 knew he was leaving, and thought that trying to retain him would be in vain. The world is full of irresponsible men, and besides, Yijie meeting them was but a fleeting encounter. He and she even had some grievances between them. Crows are universally black.
As Number 0 was contemplating whether she should break the bank to take the Purple-clothed woman to an inn, Yijie unexpectedly returned.
In his hand, he also held an ordinary Babylonian woman’s moon-white robe and veil, "Change into these clothes, then we’ll discuss the long-term plan." (To be continued.
