The Mafia's Undoing-Chapter 196: Hostage
In the hotel room in London, Dmitri Volkov stood in the center, with his four armed men strategically positioned, as Maxwell smiled smugly.
"You’re not a prisoner, Mr. Marvin, but a business partner. A voluntary partner is like that in a profitable venture."
"So, I can leave then?"
"Of course, right after you sign these documents, transfer operational control and make me CEO of Marvin Ventures."
"And if I refuse?"
Volkov pulled up a tablet to display a live video feed. This was my home showing Rose playing in the yard, Hector reading on the porch, and Thomas with the nanny inside.
"Your family, Tony. Such beautiful children would be a shame if something unfortunate happened to them."
My blood was running ice cold. "Don’t you dare touch them."
"Then cooperate, Mr. Marvin, it’s a simple business transaction where everyone benefits, and we all survive."
Maxwell calmly explained the full criminal scope casually, as if it were nothing.
"Marvin Ventures will expand globally in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. This will be a legitimate front for international capital movement."
"You’re describing a massive money laundering operation." I spat.
"We’re describing sophisticated investment management, and it simply happens to benefit our various associates internationally."
Volkov added. "We have $5 billion to move annually. Your company provides the perfect legitimacy with its ethics, reputation, and impeccable cover."
"I won’t do it. I won’t become my father. We won’t rebuild what we destroyed."
Maxwell’s voice became cold: "You already are complicit, Marvin. You signed the partnership agreement, which is a legal document. If the FBI discovers this, you go to prison regardless of whether you cooperated or not."

Katherine’s POV
I coordinated frantically from New York and contacted Luca and Timothy.... every contact possible I could get.
"Tony’s being held against his will. He’s in London at the Ritz Hotel, Suite 2408. They’re threatening him."
Timothy sounded frustrated. "That’s British jurisdiction. I have no authority there."
"Then get British authorities involved! MI5! Scotland Yard! Whoever has jurisdiction, I don’t care at this point."
"This is an international incident, Katherine, which requires proper diplomatic channels. It could take days to coordinate properly."
"We don’t have days! They’re threatening my family right now."
Luca was decisive. "I’m flying to London immediately with a private security team. We will extract him ourselves."
"That’s completely illegal and could start a serious international incident."
"I don’t care about legality, he’s my friend. We’re getting him out."
Bella and Susan moved in with me immediately to protect Rose, Hector, and Thomas.
We had armed security everywhere, from Luca’s remaining team with FBI surveillance vehicles outside.
Rose was confused by the activity. "Mama, why are so many people here? Where’s Daddy?"
"Daddy’s on a business trip, baby. He’ll be home very soon." I said, trying to reassure her.
Hector was perceptive as always. "Are bad people coming again, like before?"
Bella knelt to his level. "We’re just being extra careful, okay? You’re completely safe."
But Hector saw the fear in our eyes and remembered the patterns. "It’s happening again, right? The danger and the threats. It never stops."

Tony’s POV
I refused to sign anything. The hours passed slowly, and Volkov was getting increasingly impatient.
"Mr. Marvin, you’re testing my patience. Just sign the documents now."
"No. I won’t destroy what Katherine and I built together. I won’t betray my family’s redemption."
The physical threats were escalating rapidly, and a gun was pressed to my head. "Sign or die. It’s a simple choice."
"Then kill me. But I won’t sign those documents." I retorted.
Maxwell intervened strategically: "Dmitri, killing him creates massive problems. A dead partner triggers automatic investigations and serious legal complications."
Volkov reconsidered his approach. "Then we take something else, a different leverage entirely."
He showed me the video feed again, of Rose innocently playing in the yard. It showed digitally superimposed crosshairs and a simulated sniper scope view.
"One phone call from your daughter dies first. Then your sons will be before moving to your wife until you fully cooperate."
The breaking point was already approaching as I couldn’t risk my family dying. I can’t betray everything we’ve worked so hard for either.
I stalled for time desperately: "I need time to think. I need to consider my options."
"You have exactly one hour. Then we start with the daughter. She’s younger and the easiest target psychologically."
I was left alone, finally, with the door locked from outside and armed guards posted. The window escape was seemingly impossible as I was on the fifteenth floor.
But the bathroom window was small and had an adjacent building surprisingly close... eight feet maybe. It’s dangerous but possibly survivable.
I planned rapidly, going through the bathroom window. The adjacent building was approximately eight feet away and fifteen stories above ground.
Jumping would be suicidal, but staying meant that my family would die. Signing those documents meant becoming a criminal.
"I’ve survived worse than this. I can do this. I must." I said to myself.
I waited for the guard shift change, their rotation pattern. When they left, I knew I had barely a few minutes, seconds maybe. I got to the bathroom window and opened it as quietly as possible. The London night was cold and windy, but I didn’t care.
The adjacent building was an office complex that closed at night, but the ledge was maybe accessible...
I climbed out carefully and looked up at the fifteen stories. I did not look down but focused exclusively on the ledge.
It was an eight-foot gap with fifteen stories above concrete. I had one chance, and I jumped, missing death by a fracture.
Volkov’s men discovered my escape attempt. "He’s out the window! STOP HIM!"
I had no choice; I jumped, sailing through the cold night air - fifteen stories up with pure terror and determination.
I landed on the adjacent ledge, barely catching the edge. I slipped but grabbed desperately, my fingers finding purchase somehow.
After pulling myself up painfully, I moved onto a narrow ledge which was safe for the moment.
Volkov’s men were shooting from the hotel window. Their bullets hit the brick inches away, narrowly missing.
I moved quickly along the ledge and found a window. I broke the glass and entered the office building, triggering the security alarm at once.
Inside the office building, the security team responded to the alarm, and I knew the police would surely arrive later.
I ran up the stairs, going up the fifteen floors as fast as possible, being pursued.
I reached the streets of London and ran through crowds in the middle of the night with Volkov’s men chasing from behind.
I called Katherine, sounding breathless. "I’m out. I’m alive, but they’re hunting me actively."
"Where are you exactly?"
"London. The streets near the Ritz. I’m being hunted like an animal."
"Luca’s landing in two hours. Get to the American Embassy; we have federal protection available there."
"I can’t. They’re definitely watching the embassy. I need to hide or go completely dark. I’ll contact you when I feel safe."

Katherine’s POV
I coordinated desperately from New York since I couldn’t help directly. I felt helpless and terrified.
"Tony’s escaping through London, and Volkov’s team is actively hunting him. We need immediate local help." I said, calling Timothy.
Timothy said he’d call the contacts he could get. "I’m contacting MI5 directly. They’re British intelligence and would assist."
But will they arrive in time, and would Tony survive, or would Volkov’s team catch him first?
I waited. The phone was silent, no updates and no contact from Tony yet.

Tony’s POV
I reached the underground station, in the tube tunnels, hiding in maintenance areas. The subway was dirty, dark, but temporarily safe.
Volkov’s team was still searching for me above.
As the hours passed, everything grew cold, and I felt exhausted.
My phone was dying at 5% battery remaining. I had to make one final call - Katherine or the police?
I called my wife. "Babe, I’m alive and hiding somewhere in the underground station. My phone will die at any second, but I love you desperately. Tell kids I love them, too."
"Tony, don’t hang up - stay on - we’re coordinating-" Then my phone went dead, and I was left alone in the cold night.

Katherine’s POV
Luca landed in London with a fully armed private security team.
"Last known location?"
I provided the details to him. "He said he’s near the Ritz Hotel at the underground stations. His phone’s completely dead now."
"We’d find him." I heard him say to his team. "Sweep the entire area. Search every tunnel and every possible hiding place."
Timothy was still coordinating with MI5. "The British police are still actively searching. Volkov’s team is wanted for kidnapping, and an international search warrant has been issued."

Tony’s POV
By dawn in the streets of London, I emerged cautiously from the tunnels looking filthy.
Luca’s team found me. "Tony! Over here!"
I collapsed with relief.
"Get me home to my family immediately."
"Already arranged. The private jet is waiting, and we’re flying out within one hour."
But Volkov and Maxwell were still out there and extremely dangerous.
At Heathrow Airport, the private jet was waiting. We boarded quickly, with Luca’s team securing the perimeter thoroughly.
Then my phone rang. It was Katherine, her voice sounding panicked. "Tony, they’re here! Volkov’s people are at the house! They breached security, and they have Rose!"
I could hear the gunfire audible over the phone. "ROSE!"
The line went dead as it was cut off.
"TURN THE PLANE AROUND! NOW! IMMEDIATELY!"
Luca was grim. "It’s a minimum eight-hour flight. We can’t turn around in mid-flight-"
"MY DAUGHTER IS IN DANGER RIGHT NOW!"
But we couldn’t turn around. The jet was already flying to New York.
Eight hours to wait while my family was under attack and Rose was in terrible danger.
I was thousands of miles away.
Everything I feared and everything I ran from was happening anyway.
Because I defied them, I tried to escape and refused to cooperate.
And now my family is paying the ultimate price.
"Hold on, Rose. Daddy’s coming. Please hold on, baby girl." I cried quietly to myself.
