Chapter 190: Yet To Come...

Jenna rubbed her eyes again to be sure she was seeing clearly. She hadn’t realized she had been away for so long, but seeing Mabel’s protruded stomach and how she was going to be dropping a child any moment gave Jenna a little clue of how long she’d been gone.

"Mabel is pregnant," Bruno repeated with a smile as if everyone couldn’t see it.

When Mabel got closer, she hugged Jenna, resting her head on Jenna’s shoulder. "My lady... I was afraid you wouldn’t be here in time to see the baby arrive."

Jenna opened her mouth, then closed it. "Mabel... I... I’m sorry. I should have—" She should have protected the girl. She had promised that and still failed. A young girl who had trusted Jenna with everything had had her innocence taken away while living with her.

And when Jenna should have protected her, she left. Now the girl was...

"Oh... Mabel... I’m so sorry... I’m sorry."

Mabel raised her brows; she moved back from the hug. "My lady?"

Jenna sniffled, shaking her head. "I can’t believe I let this happen to you... I should have... I should have found who it was or done something to stop this..." She glanced at Mabel’s stomach.

Mabel shook her head. "I am glad you didn’t, my lady," she said, rubbing her stomach. "This baby saved my life."

"Saved?" Jenna didn’t stop crying; she was afraid the trauma had affected the girl’s head. "Oh, I should have—"

"You shouldn’t have done anything else, my lady," Mabel cut her off, taking Jenna’s hand. She rubbed it slowly before bringing it to her stomach for Jenna to touch. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"Giving me hope was enough... I didn’t know it then, but watching you stand head tall amidst everything that happened with Lord Gerald... it gave me purpose." Mabel sniffled back her tears and paused, now staring at her stomach.

"I’d have been lost if you’d kicked me out of your home. If you had blamed me for what happened that night... but you chose to protect me, allowed me to stay here, and now I’ve never been happier," the girl remarked.

Jenna pressed her lips before saying, "But Mabel... you didn’t want to end up like... I mean... you know what I speak of. The baby needs a father."

"And it does," Mabel exclaimed. "I am married now."

Jenna drew her brows. "Eh?"

Mabel wiped her eyes with her sleeves. "You see? That night I was really drunk... so I couldn’t remember, but I’d followed Henri, and we..." She blushed.

"Huh?" Jenna stood there, still confused.

Harriet was the one who clapped her hands. "Lady Jenna, Henri is the father, and they got married a little after you left the village."

Mabel nodded. "Yes. He said he was scared to say it because I had informed you about it. He thought he’d get kicked out of the house. We were both drunk, and it happened... when he realized I was pregnant, he told me about it and asked me to be his wife."

Jenna rubbed her head; a lot had really happened while she was away. "And... and Henri?"

"He has gone to deliver some of the goods that arrived," Bruno chimed. "He works nonstop now that he is a father."

Mabel giggled; as if remembering something, she took Jenna’s hand. "Please don’t send us away... I promise I’ll work my entire life to pay you back everything we owe. If it’s the barn or the stable— yes! Henri and I can stay there while also working for you."

"Why? Why would you even do that?" Jenna chuckled softly. "This is our home... for all of us. Including the little one." She smiled at the girl.

"You all are my family, and I should have been here for your wedding," Jenna continued. "More than anything, I’m glad you now have a family of your own, Mabel."

Mabel couldn’t contain her joy. Feeling emotions running high, she took Jenna’s hand and rubbed it on her stomach.

Jenna held her breath. "Was it scary? When you found out you were..." she trailed.

"At first, I was scared... you weren’t here, and there was no way I could reach you," Mabel replied. "But everything happened as it should, and I’m even more excited that you’re back home before the baby arrives."

As Jenna touched the baby, she felt a small movement that scared her.

"It moved!" Jenna gasped, taking back her hand.

Mabel chuckled, taking Jenna’s hand back to place on her stomach. "The baby moves every now and then... it’s a way of greeting. Look..."

Jenna had never been more terrified in her life; she could feel the movements, and it scared her to death. She turned to look at Rhane.

"The baby is moving," she whispered to him.

Rhane gave her an approving nod; he tried not to smile at her cute reaction.

Jenna leaned forward, bringing her ear closer to the woman’s stomach. She gasped, "It’s amazing... a whole human is inside of you... it’s scary too..."

"Yes... and amazing," Mabel replied with a chuckle, her eyes filled with tears.

Rhane watched Jenna smile and jump every time the baby kicked. Something in him stirred; it was the desire to have their own children too.

To show Jenna just how much he loved her, by creating what only two of them could call theirs, their own child.

A wistful smile graced Rhane’s lips. He knew Jenna would make the best mother. She had it in her, the kindness and love to protect her own, and also the discipline to make sure they don’t abuse others.

"It’s really you, Jenna!"

Jenna stood straight when she heard her name. The voice was dauntingly familiar; before she could say the name, the young woman threw her head back and laughed.

"I heard from my father that you had returned..." She recognized Rhane and shrieked. "And he came too! I thought he’d gone forever..." The woman grabbed her hair.

"I had gotten married, thinking Jenna would be miserable after losing her servant," Beth wailed, pointing at Rhane.

Percy snickered. "And he is not a servant... he is an earl... you’ll now address him as Lord Rhane."

"Really?" Bruno asked, worried that Percy was making things up.

"With all truthfulness," Percy replied.

Beth screamed, shaking her head. "You lied... Jenna, you tricked me!" She rubbed her stomach.

"I shouldn’t have married that idiot... I should have waited... waited for my soulmate."

Jenna, who could no longer hold her laugh, turned red. Not everything had changed completely; there was still Beth. The young woman wasn’t a threat at all. She only spoke what she thought, just as though she was a child.

"Congratulations, Beth," Jenna mused.

Beth wasn’t having it. "Rhane, if you can accept this child... I can annul the marriage. Please... Jenna tricked me," the young woman whined, unwilling to give up.

"Let us go inside; I’ll have dinner prepared," Mabel ushered the group inside the house.

The best moment was yet to come.
