The King's Lover-Chapter 530: No Two Queens
The old Queen didn’t return to the dining room after she fled with water dripping down her dress. Rose could only imagine how embarrassing it must have been—having her son yell at her while she was drenched in water in front of servants.
It was hilarious for onlookers, especially since her plan backfired. The only reason Rose wasn’t laughing loud enough to shake the whole room was because it would make her act less believable.
After Violeta exited, Caius made sure she was alright and placed her in her appropriate seat next to him after the servants had cleared the wet mess.
Thankfully, lunch had not been served when Violeta threw her fit, so lunch wasn’t ruined, but the table covers and some silverware had to be changed.
When they had settled into their seats, the servants began serving their meals. Things were quieter and remained so for the rest of lunch. Rose could understand why, it was awkward after the old Queen’s demonstration.
The only conversation had was Caius constantly asking her if she was alright. As much as she wanted to keep up the act, Rose told him she was fine.
Prince Gayle didn’t join them for lunch, while his son had walked into the dining room alongside Caius. He had looked equally mortified about the incident, but he didn’t speak on it.
Caira, as usual, was the first to leave, and as soon as she excused herself, Rylen left the table, obviously chasing after her. Rose turned to her husband, wondering if he had anything to say, but Caius didn’t act as though he had seen anything.
"Your Majesty," Rose softly called.
Caius lifted his head to look at her. "Is something wrong?" he asked.
Rose shook her head, even though that was the opposite of what she felt. The princess was still here, and by the looks of things, that wasn’t going to change or get better. And worse, the old Queen had a vendetta against her. There were too many things she was worried about.
"Thank you," she simply said. "For earlier." 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
Caius’s face softened, and he grabbed her hand, squeezing lightly before he resumed eating.
After lunch was over, Caius couldn’t follow her to her room as he had a few things to attend to, and she was once again left in Maximus’s care.
Maximus walked behind her as she made her way to the King’s wing. She could hear his heavy footsteps, and it felt very reassuring.
Just as they got to the stairs leading to her floor, Rylen sped down with a distraught look on his face. He bowed quickly to Rose and was gone before she could even speak. She turned just in time to see his back as he slipped out of sight.
She looked up the stairs, but it was empty, and there was no sign that anyone had been there. Without thinking too much about it, Rose made her way up the stairs and stopped in front of her bedroom.
With one hand on the door, she turned to look at Maximus and, nodding her head, she said, "Thank you. I would have gotten more water on me if it weren’t for you."
Maximus simply nodded in response and waited for her to open her bedroom door. When she stepped in and shut the door, he turned around and left.
Rose let out a breath when she was finally in the confines of her room. She dropped into a nearby seat and leaned back, stretching her shoulders.
She was grateful Caius had shown up when he did because she would have reacted terribly. If Violeta had poured the water on, Rose was certain she would have smacked her with the empty jug.
A wet dress could dry; a bruise, on the other hand, would need more than a few days.
Rose wasn’t worried about hurting the Queen; she was worried about the rumors that were bound to spread after. She still had a lot to prove, and she didn’t want to ruin that so soon.
No one would talk about how the Queen drenched and embarrassed her; all they were going to talk about was that she had hit her. And Rose knew she wouldn’t do it lightly.
She laughed as she recalled how horrified the old Queen had been when she realized that things weren’t going her way—her wet dress, her son’s appearance, and worse, the stares of the servants.
However, Rose knew this was not over, and she was almost certain it would make things worse. Violeta was not going to learn her lesson until something drastic happened.
Rose smiled to herself. She was going to place her cards, and when the time was right, she would strike. There couldn’t be two queens in a castle.
Caira wasn’t much of a threat, as not only was she a faux queen, but she didn’t seem to want to antagonize her. So for now, she would ignore her and hope that Rylen would be able to keep his word as he had promised Caius.
Rose touched her temple. She had only been queen for less than a day and things were already getting out of hand. Regardless, she couldn’t complain, as she knew things were only going to get worse. She could only brace herself for it.
Rose spent the rest of the day getting as much rest as she needed. She also did some studying. She would have to find a way to convince Caius to get her a tutor, or perhaps she might take his offer and go to the library. But before that, she wanted to see her father and Lady Delphine.
Rose planned to ask Caius after dinner. She wondered if it was too soon to head out, but perhaps now was better before the news spread. When things became rowdy, it would be harder for her to leave the castle.
Dinner soon arrived, and once again, her maids were nowhere to be seen. Rose tried not to think too much about it as she made her way to the dining room with Maximus by her side, as usual.
