The Kingmaker System-Chapter 154 - 153. Something Sinister (3)
Chapter 154: 153. Something Sinister (3)
Even though I had refused to arrange a party, the household personnel had still made cake and some snacks to celebrate my birthday.
Silas, Grandfather and Lady Elise were also present there along with Father and the maids and servants.
I celebrated with the others but the atmosphere wasn’t as happy as last time as one of the important people wasn’t there.
My birthday passed by without any other events and with only the letters that came from the other noble kids who knew me wishing me for my birthday.
Another four days passed by and I couldn’t help but feel uneasy as the report was still taking time to reach me.
As the fifth day melted into night, I couldn’t wait anymore and I went back to the bookstore only to find it to be handled by the helper of Rose, Martin.
The middle-aged man wasn’t a criminal or an assassin, he was the homeless man who got a place in Oasis and a job here to be the helper and also the one who arranged the documents and placed them in their respective places.
"Where’s Rose?" I asked him.
"Miss Rose," he looked a bit uneasy, "She..."
"Tell me," I demanded.
"She went to Hezborn." He said making me frown.
Hezborn was the town closest to Lozar and that was one of the places which I had asked to be investigated, but then why did she go there?
"Hezborn? Why?" I asked.
"She told me to hand you this when you come," he said as he ducked down behind the counter and then stood back up placing a manila envelope in front of me.
I picked it up and plucked out the papers from inside, the first two pages itself seemed quite hastily written and then the third page made my eyebrows jump.
"When did she leave?" I asked.
"Yesterday." He answered making me release an exasperated sigh before I turned on my heel.
"Ma-Master!" I stopped as Martin called me and I looked at him.
"Um... Rose told me that when you come I should tell you that she will fulfil the task that you gave her." He said and I shook my head before I left the place.
The few people who saw me greeted me and I nodded back before I entered an alley and unfurled my wings taking off to the town of Hezborn.
Lozar, Borkshire, Crigston and now Hezborn.
These four towns were the closest to Shadowcliff City and these towns were facing some strange issues with their destitute and criminal populace. The people who had basically no family or support were disappearing at night and no one ever heard from them again or found out how it was happening.
But what drove me to take action was that the reports mentioned that even though my team was kidnapped, all of them had disappeared. The last location that they had sent back a report from was Hezborn and to investigate that Rose must have gone there.
Whoever this was, I wasn’t going to take a severe action myself but now that they had laid their hands on my people they had basically signed a death warrant.
I landed on the rooftop of a tall building in Hezborn and looked down at the deserted streets devoid of any living beings.
No human, not even animals were around, it just heightened my sense of urgency as I had no idea of what happened to Rose. Enora was away on a mission and in her absence, if I let her daughter get hurt then, I might never be able to forgive myself.
I activated my Mana Eyes and scanned the area carefully, the life energies were present in the small town but all of them were inside the safety of their homes.
I looked around three times before I flapped my wings and flew down scanning the streets carefully, straining my eyes to catch some unusual movements beyond the walls.
I just passed by an alley when I heard the sound of a woman’s scream, I quickly shot towards that direction and after a few seconds, I saw one woman fighting against three men dressed like mercenaries.
They were trying to grab her but she was fighting back and needless, to say she was a familiar girl.
"Rose!" I shouted making her flinch and turn her head to look at me.
"Master?!"
I swung my foot kicking the closest attacker before I punched the second one and landed in front of Rose looking at the last man.
"Who-Who the hell are you?!" He shouted and I glared at him.
"Didn’t you hear her? I’m her Master." I spoke as I took one step ahead making him pull out a sword.
"This is not the time to be a hero," he spat, "even though you knocked them out, it’s useless against me."
"Hand the girl over and leave quietly." He ordered.
I tilted my head as my anger surged in my veins.
"A puny human like you dares to order me?" I spoke up making him scowl at me.
"Fine, have it your way!" He shouted before he charged at me and swung his sword.
I held the blade with my bare hand making Rose gasp behind me and the man landed on his feet before he tugged at his sword.
"Who sent you?" I asked.
"Why you- What the hell are you?"
"I asked, who sent you?" I repeated my question.
My patience level was really low at this point as I saw the two men from earlier slowly getting to their feet. They looked at their teammate and then at me.
"Let go of my sword, you monster!" The man shouted.
"It’s either you answer my question or none of you are going back alive," I spoke in a threatening tone.
"You will kill us? What a-"
I snapped the blade in my hand in half making him stumble back and look at his broken sword before he turned his perplexed gaze at me as I crushed the iron in my hand before opening my palm letting the crushed splinters of iron fall to the ground.
"M-Monster!"
"He’s a monster! Run!"
The two who were behind scurried away while I locked eyes with the third man who was frozen in his spot.
"Now... are you going to die or will you answer my question?" I asked.
His eyes widened and saw as the sweat beads formed on his forehead before flowing down the sides of his face.
"Y-You-"
He was about to charge at me again when I heard the sound of a low whistle as if something was being shot towards us, piercing through the air it was almost as if a bullet was being fired or something. Before I could react the metallic tip of an arrow was sticking out of the man’s chest.
He released a gurgled cough before he fell to the ground, the blood started pooling out and I heard Rose gasp.
I heard the same sound again before I gripped Rose and jumped away watching as an arrow lodged itself in the place we were just a second ago.
I held her up in my arms as I scanned the area again for this archer or sniper but I couldn’t see anyone.
I let her down on the roof of the nearest building.
"Stay down," I commanded before I leapt off to go look for the other two who had run away earlier.
If my guess was correct then after a few feet I would find their dead bodies.
And I did, I found the two lying on the ground in the next alley with the arrows piercing through their bodies.
I flew up in the air and looked around to see if someone was hiding at some higher place or running to change places but I found no one like that.
I gritted my teeth and cursed under my breath as I didn’t take a sniper into account.
But it solidified my suspicion and also took me one step closer to the confirmation that what Lord Devil was trying to mention was the truth.
I flew back to Rose and from there teleported to Ryujin mansion. freewebnoveℓ.com
I sighed as I plopped down in the armchair and she was given some water to relax.
"Why did you go there yourself?" I asked making Rose flinch.
"I-I found out that the people we sent were missing so, I went to investigate about their disappearances."
"Are you-" I was about to snap at her but I simply closed my eyes and inhaled deeply calming my anger.
"I-I’m sorry, Master. I didn’t mean to disobey you."
"Do you have any idea what could have happened if I were late?" I asked as I opened my eyes and looked at her.
She hung her head with her fingers clutching the fabric of her skirt tightly.
"I gave you to work to look after the information guild’s base and forward the reports that you would get to me but why are you going around getting yourself in unnecessary danger?"
"I-"
"How do you think," I spoke as I leaned ahead, "I would have faced your mother if something were to happen to you?"
She glanced up at me with guilt swirling in her eyes and expression which said that she was just a step away from bursting into tears.
"If the team you sent was missing then you should have told me about that before taking matters into your own hands," I said and she nodded.
I sighed feeling relieved and frustrated at the same time. I managed to bring her back but the rest of my people were still MIA. With just this much I was sure that Lord Devil’s intel though incomplete was accurate. Something sinister was being planned right behind our backs and we might already be in the trap that someone laid.
"Will you take your lesson from this incident?" I asked and Rose looked at me.
"Yes, Master."
"Good, now tell me whatever you got to know from that place."
