The Informal Tomb Raiding Diary: She is the occupant of the tomb!-Chapter 296 - 265: Won’t Back Down (Part 3)
Wen Jing and I walked out of the inner room. The masked man was still holding a gun, facing off against Zhaosi. Black smoke swirled around Zhaosi, the human-shaped black smoke transforming into mist and enveloping Zhaosi.
Baozi and Shunfeng peeked out from the kitchen, using a pot lid as a shield. Their tense expressions eased when they saw Wen Jing was safe.
"Don’t just stand there, there are playing cards in the bedroom drawer, you four can play cards." Despite the standoff between Zhaosi and the masked man, he didn’t forget to entertain us, worried we’d be bored.
The female white-collar worker had left for a while, and just waiting around was indeed boring. I went to the inner room to get the playing cards and led Baozi and the others to play cards in the kitchen.
The dining room no longer had intact tables and chairs, but at least the kitchen had basins we could use as seats.
I moved the gas cylinder to the middle between the masked man and Zhaosi, thinking that if they fired a gun, they would be the ones suffering from it.
The female white-collar worker was gone for three hours, the masked man held his gun for three hours, and like Sun Wukong summoning reinforcements from the heavens, Zhaosi stood unmoving across from them, holding his ground for three hours.
As it was getting close to dinner time, the four of us returned the pot to its original place, and I went out to move the gas cylinder back to the kitchen.
When the female white-collar worker returned, her expression was difficult to read. She asked Zhaosi what had been sold of the tomb owner.
Zhaosi thought for a moment and said it was probably in the early years of the Republic, when tomb robbery was rampant, and the authorities couldn’t handle it. Excavations in the Western Regions were especially rampant. She had someone mix the mummified remains of the tomb owner with the goods being transported from there, pretending it was just part of a shipment. After all, the person she trusted had the means and the brains, and it finally got sold.
The focus of the female white-collar worker was different from Zhaosi’s, and she asked again, "You sold it?"
I believed I understood her implication, and Zhaosi nodded, saying, "Yes."
The female white-collar worker sneered, "In the nineteen hundred and something, how old were you then?"
Hearing this, Zhaosi frowned and said, "Why, is there an age limit for selling mummies?"
From the female white-collar worker’s reaction, she probably didn’t know Zhaosi was an old immortal who’d lived for over a thousand years. I quickly stepped in to mediate, "Don’t listen to her nonsense. The mummy was sold by her grandmother. Their family has been passionate about tomb raiding for generations and has a special love for living in ancient tombs."
Zhaosi merely smiled faintly, not refuting my words. The female white-collar worker also smiled and said, "The mummy you mentioned disappeared half a year ago."
"Whether it was stolen or cremated, if it was in Howard’s house, it proves we weren’t lying. The treasure you mentioned stayed with the tomb owner for so long without resurrecting him, which shows that the rumors are baseless."
"Oh? I don’t think so. I asked someone to inquire with the housekeeper and security guards working in their house on the day the mummy disappeared, and checked the local police records. The treasury was opened from the inside, and there were footprints on the ground. Don’t you think... the mummy walked out on its own?" 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"No surveillance?" I asked.
"The current Family Head, Robert Howard, deleted the surveillance data. A private collection went missing and he deleted that day’s surveillance. The police believe it was done by someone within their family, and Robert Howard also said he wouldn’t pursue the matter, clearly wanting to keep things quiet."
"Maybe that’s the case." I shrugged.
"Ha, he hired private detectives to look for people afterward. Note, he was looking for ’people’. If the mummy wasn’t revived, is there another explanation?"
"He might also be looking for the person who stole the mummy, someone he’s close to and doesn’t want to catch through the police."
"Who can steal a body from the treasury without entering it? Entering requires Howard’s iris and password, but exiting doesn’t, unless... Howard himself let the mummy out and then let it escape."
"Well... a corpse driver could do that. Have you heard of corpse walkers? They can manipulate corpses to walk."
The female white-collar worker sneered again, "Go overseas to steal a mummy with false information?"
"It’s not impossible. It’s written in novels that experts can calculate the location of a corpse no matter how many years it’s been dead or where it’s buried. Maybe the descendants of the tomb owner wanted to find him? So they consulted an expert who calculated that the body was abroad. What to do? Hire a corpse driver to bring it back, perfectly reasonable!"
"Nonsense!" The female white-collar worker’s expression darkened, obviously angered.
"The mummy was in the treasury for over a hundred years and suddenly came to life, now that sounds like nonsense. At least my speculation is reasonable and based on evidence."
"Based on ’evidence’ from novels? Hmph, I think the treasure had an effect. Stop wasting time and hand over the treasure."
I checked the time; it was almost time for the scenic area to close. If we didn’t leave soon, we wouldn’t make it out today.
The female white-collar worker seemed convinced that the coffin had the power to resurrect, but in my opinion, we might as well give it to her. There’s no need to lose lives over a useless coffin.
