The Husband I Snatched Is Not Right!-Chapter 40: I Truly Want to Treat You Well
Yu Tingwan felt regret for not getting an answer from Wei Zhao.
The window was ajar, allowing the wind to seep in.
She put down the scissors, carefully stored away the large and small wedding characters, fearing they might be blown all over the floor, and didn’t forget to press down the stone Wei Zhao had thrown to her earlier.
She was about to go out and ask Hui Niang if there was anything she could help with.
The little girl had just taken a few steps when she heard a rustling behind her. She suddenly sensed something was wrong and turned her head to see Wei Zhao, who had been feigning dead just now, half sitting up.
His face was pale, his arms were weak, as he turned sideways to reach for the scissors Yu Tingwan had forgotten on the wooden table by the bed.
Wei Zhao met Yu Tingwan’s death stare, yet his face showed no hint of embarrassment from being caught out.
His arms were long, but the distance was too far. Wei Zhao slowly shifted toward the edge of the bed. But before he could touch the scissors, Yu Tingwan moved them directly away.
Yes, she moved them.
She didn’t pick up the scissors but directly picked up the wooden table.
Wei Zhao was not persistent, slowly withdrawing his hand.
Yu Tingwan walked back to the bedside, her eyes unreadable, her tone indifferent.
"I know you’ve been away from home for too long, and everyone in the village has forgotten you completely, certainly not remembering the Li Family at the head of the village."
"But Aunt Hui told me, when you were young, you had the best relationship with the son of that family."
"Last year, that Li Family son fell ill with a strange disease, and all day he held his head complaining of pain. The doctor in the county couldn’t figure out the symptoms, but he vomited whatever he ate, and within half a year, he was gone."
"Before the burial, people from the village went to take a look and were terribly frightened. Some even stumbled backward. They all said the Li Family son didn’t look human, emaciated to the point of being skin and bones, with every bone countable on his body."
"He endured for half a year, desperately wanting to live but never finding hope. You, on the other hand... simply don’t wish to live."
Yu Tingwan casually remarked, "I know your injuries are severe, and I can’t help shoulder some of your pain. I can’t lightly criticize you for what you shouldn’t do. But Wei Shen, if something happens to you..."
She pursed her lips, "What am I supposed to do?"
Wei Zhao looked out the window.
A vast, white world, everything was heavily shrouded in a desolate haze.
His impulsiveness, his pride, his vigor and spirit, had long been dug out, leaving nothing. With a dead heart, how could he perceive the joys, sorrows, and warmth of the world?
He never thought about getting married. Yu Tingwan’s words stirred no ripple in him either.
Wei Zhao chuckled lightly, but his eyes were bland, devoid of any emotion, "You’re afraid something might happen to me?"
"But you don’t even know who I am."
"You know nothing of my character, nor my past. You moved out of the Hu Family, so it’s evident you’re not indecisive. We’ve only been together for a few days, and I admit I have nothing that demands your esteem. Deciding to marry into the Wei Family, you must have weighed the pros and cons, and I’m just a girl’s best choice."
"What the girl should fear is not that I might be in trouble, but that you haven’t married over here before it happens."
Yu Tingwan blinked.
She hadn’t expected Wei Zhao to say so much.
Surely he must have been too stingy before, leaving Yu Tingwan somewhat shocked by the favor. More shock—astonishment.
"Clear thinking, sharp words..., doesn’t seem like your brain was broken from the fall."
Wei Zhao: ...
Not one word of what he said she actually listened to, did she?
Yu Tingwan responded muffled, "I never thought..."
The girl’s voice halted.
Calling her decisive is praising her for being purposeful.
Calling her capable of weighing pros and cons means she’s smart!
"Never thought you’d see me as so outstanding."
Wei Zhao: ???
He couldn’t help but laugh angrily.
Even someone without a temper would get riled up by Yu Tingwan!
It’s said that spouses share beds in life and tombs in death. He wanted to take Yu Tingwan with him to die!
Wei Zhao’s face stiffened.
If his confidants saw this, they’d be so frightened they’d drop to their knees, introspecting over who offended the General.
Not to mention his confidants, the young gentlemen in Shangjing who admired him would be righteously furious, scrambling to root out the instigator to vent for him.
But as the instigator witnessed the shift in Wei Zhao’s mood, she was not scared at all.
The little girl stepped forward and pushed him down. Her action wasn’t forceful, at least she avoided yanking Wei Zhao’s wound.
"I don’t know what you’ve gone through. If you don’t mention it, I won’t ask. But heavy thoughts are not good."
Wei Zhao had no intention of resisting at all.
He calmly watched Yu Tingwan smooth the wrinkles on his sleeves, then watched her adjust the bedding.
Even though these past days he’d applied ointment, stayed away from cold water, and the chilblains healed a lot, in Wei Zhao’s eyes, they were still particularly alarming.
Wei Zhao lived cleanly, never lingering in brothels. He had few female encounters.
But the Duchess Shun around him, the ladies in the palace, which one of them didn’t maintain delicate fingers, well-kept? Even the elderly women in Duke Shun Mansion were more delicate than Yu Tingwan...
However, it’s unrelated to him.
Wei Zhao found it meaningless.
But just then his neck felt a chill, something was snatched away.
It was his peace charm.
Wei Zhao suddenly looked at her coldly.
Yu Tingwan clenched the peace charm little by little in her palm.
"I will still take issue over the scissors, you won’t listen to good or bad words, clearly you won’t learn a lesson."
It was fortunate Wei Zhao had something he cared about.
"Until you truly repent and won’t harm yourself anymore, I’ll return it to you. Now..."
Yu Tingwan resolutely stated, "Confiscated."
Wei Zhao squinted his eyes.
How can you dare?
The little girl didn’t look at his expression, directly heading out, but the moment she went out, she paused.
Her voice was calm, "I admit, marrying into the Wei Family I have ulterior motives, just seeking some stability. I’m indeed afraid you’ll be in trouble."
"A few days ago, your life or death as Wei Shen had nothing to do with me."
"But since we’re to be wedded, our honor and shame entwined, even if you die, we’re inseparable."
"You say I don’t know your character, but do you know my preferences?"
Her voice was very soft, "I am prepared to live a good life with you, already ready to endure the hardships. We will be the most intimate people in the world, and I will even bear children for you. How can there be calculation in this? I sincerely wish to be good to you, how could I bear to see you in trouble?"
With the last word spoken, her figure vanished at the doorway.
Within the room, only Wei Zhao’s inexplicable emotions remained.
Originally thought Yu Tingwan was avoiding his words, who knew she was playing dumb with a clear mind.
She said they would be the closest people in the world.
Indeed, spouses are to partake in intimate rites.
She said she would bear children for him.
Wei Zhao felt complex emotions.
Why did Yu Tingwan think he would touch her?
Currently, he couldn’t muster up any spirit, what gave Yu Tingwan the belief that he had the capability to touch her?
Wei Zhao lacked this confidence.
She said she wanted to be good to him.
But it’s often those who say they mean well that hurt him the most.
Wei Zhao even forgot to retrieve his peace charm.
He stared blankly for a long time.
No one knew how much time passed, Wei Zhao furrowed his brows. Only then did he realize that the little girl just now had called him Wei Shen, not Wei Zhao.
Wei Zhao: ...
