The Husband I Snatched Is Not Right!-Chapter 270 - 267: She’s a Madwoman
The canopy closed around them.
From time to time, came the helpless sobs of a woman.
Her body trembled slightly, her hand resting against Wei Zhao’s tense chest, enduring the intense and delicate kisses.
Perhaps out of pity for her, Wei Zhao didn’t rush to give her everything at first.
Watching Yu Tingwan gradually adapt, his movements began to intensify.
Yu Tingwan was very tired.
She didn’t know how long it had been; her face was flushed unnaturally, feeling like she was about to melt from the heat.
She took deep breaths.
Wei Zhao carried her to clean up.
The night was exceptionally long.
Inside, the room was filled with an enticing spring-like atmosphere.
Outside, there were sobbing sounds, and a black shadow scurried over, knocking frantically on the door in the alley.
No response from one house, anxiously moving to knock on another.
"Who is it! In the middle of the night."
Someone cursed angrily.
"Hey, are you trying to die! Sneaking around my doorstep!"
"Looks like she’s out of her mind, a lunatic."
The voices outside gradually grew louder.
Yu Tingwan, once cleaned up, just lay down on the couch, extremely exhausted.
In her hazy consciousness, she heard the noise from outside.
She couldn’t even open her eyes.
"What’s going on?"
Wei Zhao soothed her slender back: "Don’t mind it."
Yu Tingwan prepared to continue sleeping.
The noise outside did not diminish.
"Where did this madwoman come from? I’ve never seen her before."
"Oh, I reckon she’s from Xiang Si’s house on Siyuan Street."
"Siyuan Street? The street out front? Zhou Family’s Daughter-in-law, since you know her, you should take her back, so her family doesn’t worry themselves sick."
"I wouldn’t dare, this lunatic bites."
The Zhou Family’s Daughter-in-law pouted, unwilling to make the trip.
She was full of disdain.
"This madwoman runs out every so often, her husband must be used to it by now. If her mind wasn’t unclear, I’d suspect she had a lover outside hiding from Xiang Si."
Yu Tingwan opened her eyes.
Wei Zhao: "Is it bothering you?"
Yu Tingwan struggled to get up: "I want to go take a look."
Wei Zhao: ...
Just moments ago, she was helplessly begging him to hurry up so she could sleep, now she’s ready to brave the exhaustion to join the commotion.
Outside the room.
The woman, pointed at and ridiculed by the crowd, was filthy all over, her hair a tangled mess covering most of her face. Seeing more people gathering, she became both fearful and wary, trying to sneak away with her head down.
The Zhou Family’s Daughter-in-law had a harsh tone: "Where do you think you’re going? Stay put, your husband will be here soon."
The woman’s path was blocked, leaving her no choice but to retreat, eventually shrinking into a corner.
Her chapped hands were covered in frostbite, oozing pus, but she didn’t seem aware of the itching, just trembling in fear.
Creak.
The courtyard across, long unoccupied, had someone open a tiny crack.
Yu Tingwan’s legs were weak and wobbly, feeling like she couldn’t find solid ground.
At the sound, everyone turned to look her way.
Yu Tingwan didn’t care at all, her eyes fixed on the disheveled woman.
She furrowed her brow.
When she first arrived in Wuyang City, she had seen this woman.
Somebody carried a lantern closer to take a look, quickly covering their nose and stepping back, filled with disdain.
"She really stinks, her nails thick with dirt. Who knows how long she’s worn those clothes, and Xiang Si doesn’t wash her up."
Zhou Family’s Daughter-in-law: "How could you? Even if washed, this lunatic would just mess herself up again."
"Xiang Si is a man, he has to earn a living, take care of the child, keeping her as a burden instead of abandoning her in the wilderness is already considering their marital bond, where would he find the energy to tidy her up?"
She was about to say more, but there was someone behind her now.
Yu Tingwan spoke gently: "What you’re saying is not right."
The Zhou Family’s Daughter-in-law was stunned: "Wh...where did I go wrong?"
"Earning a living, taking care of the child, isn’t that what a husband is supposed to do?"
"What’s there to flaunt about?"
The Zhou Family’s Daughter-in-law: ...
There’s some truth to it, but somehow it feels off.
Yu Tingwan: "Having someone in need of care at home isn’t easy, it’s indeed difficult, and not everything can be managed perfectly."
"But I have seen a mother-daughter pair, the daughter went mad after an incident. Her engagement called off, leaving mother and daughter to rely on each other. The mother alone manages everything at home; for their livelihood, she still tends to the outside fields, no less busy than anyone else."
"She couldn’t keep the daughter in sight at all times, yet whenever I saw them, the girl was always clean and tidy."
Even if her clothes got dirty, as long as she didn’t roll in the mud, her hair was neatly combed.
There would always be pretty ribbons tied in her hair.
Yu Tingwan: "Not everyone can be like that mother, but..."
Yet this woman’s hair was greasy, matted into clumps.
Who knows how many months it hadn’t been washed.
That time, she had also met Xiang Si.
Though his clothes were patched, he had kept himself tidy.
At least, from Yu Tingwan’s perspective, Xiang Si didn’t show enough care for this woman.
Yu Tingwan spoke softly: "If he thinks, his wife who bore his children, braved the Ghost Gate for him, is just a burden, then he’s lacking in virtue."
The Zhou Family’s Daughter-in-law quickly said: "He doesn’t. But that’s what people outside are saying."
Yu Tingwan wondered: "Since he doesn’t find it troublesome, why would outsiders hold grievances on his behalf?"
The Zhou Family’s Daughter-in-law: ...
I guess that makes sense.
"You don’t understand, Xiang Si is exceptionally considerate to his wife."
She gave examples to Yu Tingwan.
Her voice loud, obviously seeking the approval of those around.
"A household with someone not in their right mind, for peace of mind, typically keeps the person confined at home."
"Years ago, Xiang Si did lock her up. But this lunatic smashed everything she could inside, then banged her head against the wall. Once, she smashed till her face was covered in blood."
"Xiang Si had no choice. He chained her in the courtyard, one end tied to the millstone to prevent her from running, the other end around the lunatic’s neck like a dog. This way, she couldn’t hurt herself or run away, but it wasn’t a solution either. The madwoman wasn’t scared of being strangled, as long as she had strength, she’d go into a frenzy, dashing around crazily, with the chain cutting into her neck, bloody."
After that incident, not only was Xiang Si terrified, but even the neighbors were alarmed.
"Since then, he dared not keep her confined."
"When she’s not watched, she often runs out, requiring a search each time."
Hearing this, everyone expressed agreement.
"Well, the way you put it, the man indeed seems decent."
"If it were me, I would’ve divorced her long ago. Or starved her for a few meals, until she was too weak to cause trouble."
Someone asked: "Did she fall ill and go mad?"
The Zhou Family’s Daughter-in-law waved her hand.
"When Xiang Si brought her back, her mind was already unsound."
Yu Tingwan: ?
Not only was she silent, everyone fell quiet.
"This..."
"Never heard of marrying someone unsound when there are plenty of healthy girls."
The Zhou Family’s Daughter-in-law: "Xiang Si was old, and his family was poor."
She chuckled, with a tone of indifference: "It wasn’t even a proper marriage."
"Don’t be fooled by the madwoman’s current grimy state, her looks were quite good."
"She could recite poetry, likely literate."
