The Husband I Snatched Is Not Right!-Chapter 27: Does He Take Her for a Ragpicker?
When Yu Tingwan woke up again, the sky was bright.
The thing Yu Tingwan disliked the most was rainy days. Damp and cold, it clung to her body, impossible to shake off, and easily led to colds.
She half-lowered her eyelids, her expression growing more and more indifferent.
She wondered when this harsh winter would finally end.
"Wan Niang, Wan Niang."
Someone called out from outside.
The old house didn’t have a rainproof straw raincoat, and Yu Tingwan, scanning around, had no choice but to lower her head and run to open the door.
The distance wasn’t long, but the downpour was relentless.
Upon seeing her, Hui Niang quickly handed the umbrella she was holding over Yu Tingwan’s head.
"I brought you some vegetables."
Seeing Yu Tingwan frown, she chuckled.
"The farm vegetables are cheap. If you don’t accept them, I might have to return you two coins. But I thought this weather is quite odd, colder than in previous years, and you surely can’t be going up the mountain every day."
"Oh yes, we made tofu at home, and there’s some tofu pudding. It just came out of the pot and is still hot. I wasn’t sure if you’d prefer it sweet or salty, so I didn’t bring it."
Yu Tingwan, who ate boiled vegetables every day, swallowed her saliva.
Living next door to the Wei Family, she knew better than anyone about Hui Niang’s cooking skills.
The tofu pudding she made must be delicious.
Hui Niang: "The salty one has scallions, drizzled with the sauce we previously made, and contains chopped wood ear mushrooms and pickles."
"The sweet one has osmanthus honey drizzled over it, which Lang’s father collected from the mountain half a year ago."
Since Wei Zhao didn’t eat much, she would change the dishes up.
Yu Tingwan found it hard to resist.
But she couldn’t just eat the Wei Family’s food for free; she was reluctant to spend her last six copper coins.
Suppressing her craving, she mumbled, "No, thank you."
Perhaps guessing she’d refuse, Hui Niang wasn’t surprised.
"There’s one more thing I want to mention."
Hui Niang: "You’ve seen Lang’s condition; he can’t go without medicine. Soon, his father has to go out to earn money, but Lang can’t be left alone. I heard from Doctor Qian that you can dig herbs."
"Wan Niang, how about this?"
"I’ll buy any herbs you find that Lang can use."
Doctor Qian’s medicines were expensive, and the prices in town would be even higher. Anyway, this money needed to be spent. Hui Niang wanted to help her.
Yu Tingwan understood well and knew that the Wei Family had many expenses. She didn’t refuse, "I’ll give the auntie a discount."
This way, it was mutually beneficial.
When Hui Niang mentioned the tofu pudding again, Yu Tingwan didn’t refuse.
The tofu was made in the kitchen.
The roof was leaking, and bowls were placed underneath to catch the drips, which were emptied outside when full.
Wei Shouzhong watched the bowl, and in an instant, turned around to find that the person in the chair was gone.
Wei Zhao went out in the rain.
Wei Shouzhong realized something was off and chased him outside. Seeing that persuasion was futile, he held up an umbrella to cover him.
Yu Tingwan was following Hui Niang inside at this moment.
The rain poured down heavily; he clearly did nothing but stood in the courtyard, his face calm, eyes isolated and distant, yet the figure seemed especially lonely.
His long, ink-like hair draped down, and both his hair and clothes were dripping water. Despite the sorry state, there was an unhidden nobility.
He seemed to be out of place in this remote village.
The wicked wind sent rain droplets as big as beans pounding onto him, heavily hitting his face.
The sky was gloomy, with constant flashes of lightning.
Wei Zhao chuckled softly, his voice hoarse.
"It’s just not as invigorating as having blood splattered on my face."
The rain was cold, but blood was hot.
Hui Niang’s pupils constricted sharply, her voice trembling: "Why do you always have to harm your body!"
Wei Zhao looked over calmly, repeating himself yet again, without any annoyance.
"I..."
"I am not Wei Shen."
In his bones, he exuded indifference.
"There’s no need for you to waste your energy on me."
"After all... no matter how much you give, you won’t get anything in return."
The current him was nothing but a shell that could barely breathe. His body was bloodied, riddled with injuries.
What could Wei Shouzhong do? Wei Zhao said he wasn’t his father, and he accepted it: "Alright, alright, you’re not."
Wei Zhao: ...
He showed no intention to go back, nor did he mind Wei Shouzhong shielding him from the rain.
Wei Zhao seemed puzzled.
He asked word by word.
"If there’s a great injustice, bearing a sea of blood hatred yet unable to take revenge, would the heavens rain blood?"
His voice was so soft, as if asking himself, not expecting anyone to give him an answer.
Yet someone suddenly spoke up ahead.
"No, it won’t."
Yu Tingwan’s tone was so flat it bore no ripples.
"In the twelfth year of Da Jin, there was a continuous drought, whatever was planted in the fields died, the Court’s disaster relief funds were slow to arrive, people couldn’t afford food, became skin and bones, countless died of starvation."
"Even if there are gods in the sky, they don’t necessarily have merciful hearts."
Yu Tingwan was eventually pulled to the kitchen to warm up by the fire. As she drank the tofu pudding, she felt a moment of wanting to cry.
This was what food tasted like!
Yu Tingwan ate seriously, spoonful by spoonful. Even though she was very hungry, she ate quickly, but still appeared quite refined.
Wei Zhao was made to sit across from her to warm up by the fire.
He had already changed into dry clothes, his expression listless.
Hui Niang: "This time we made a lot of tofu, the husband will take some to Doctor Qian, he’s been working hard lately."
Wei Shouzhong agreed, threw on a straw raincoat, and left with a few pieces of tofu. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
Hui Niang would boil an egg for Wei Zhao every day, and today was no exception; she stuffed one into his hand.
Wei Zhao turned his head, intending to throw it away.
But Hui Niang would definitely nag, just thinking about it was annoying.
He looked at Yu Tingwan, who was treating the tofu pudding like a gourmet meal.
She ate with satisfaction, her eyes bright.
While Hui Niang was busy at the hearth, a boiled egg suddenly appeared in front of Yu Tingwan.
She was a bit stunned, looking at Wei Zhao.
Seeing no reaction, Wei Zhao, impatient, tossed the egg into the fire.
Yu Tingwan: !!!
That was precious food.
The Hu Family’s hens’ eggs were carefully saved. Half were for Hu Yaozu to nurture his health, and the other half went to town to be sold.
She quickly used a stick to retrieve the egg.
Yu Tingwan thought perhaps he truly was a bit off in the head.
She placed the egg on the table and went to find Hui Niang.
Hui Niang: "Do you want another bowl?"
"No, thank you."
She was already very full.
"The basket on the table, remember to take it on your way home."
She turned to see Wei Zhao, whose eyes were drooping, and reminded him again.
"Lang, eat the egg quickly, you have to take medicine afterwards."
She then said to Yu Tingwan, "There’s nothing much inside, just some tofu and pickled vegetables that I made myself."
Wei Zhao expressionlessly tossed the egg into the basket covered with cloth.
On second thought, he also threw in the sweets that Wei Shouzhong had forced on him.
Yu Tingwan thought the basket particularly heavy.
Back at the old house, she opened it to take a look.
She saw tender tofu, pickled vegetables in a ceramic jar, a cracked egg, candies in the corner, a few rocks, tiles fallen from the roof, and...
The girl caught her breath.
Why was there also a bowl of medicine in the basket!
It wasn’t hard to guess who did it.
Did Wei Shen consider her a junk collector!
