Chapter 135: At the Very Least, I’ll Take a Third of His Assets

"You walked out five years ago. Why bother coming back now?"

Rachel Royce walked over, set down her bag, and sat on the sofa.

Sylvia Shannon watched her, frowning, then heard Rachel say, "To divorce your son, of course."

Sylvia was stunned to hear her say this.

She never thought the word "divorce" would come from Rachel’s own lips.

Seeing her attitude, Sylvia became very displeased.

She sneered. "Divorce? What, are you planning to take Tristan’s assets?"

Rachel said in a serious tone, "That’s right. At the very least, I’ll take a third of his assets."

Sylvia’s expression turned cold. "You’ve got some nerve."

"It’s a legal claim. Why wouldn’t I dare?"

Sylvia stared at her, her breathing heavy. "Is that so? We’ll see if you have what it takes. Since you’ve chosen to disown Melissa, then don’t you ever let her know who you are."

"That’s between me and my daughter. You don’t need to worry about it, Mrs. Sterling."

Hearing this, Sylvia’s expression soured even more.

"If there’s nothing else, Mrs. Sterling, I’m going to make dinner for Melissa."

Whenever Rachel had time, she would cook for Melissa herself.

She got up and headed toward the kitchen. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Lisa Lawson and Frances Wyatt saw Sylvia’s foul expression and cautiously approached. "Ma’am."

They had naturally overheard the conversation between Rachel and their employer.

They had been suspicious of Evelynn’s identity, but after hearing the conversation, they realized she really was Rachel Royce.

It was almost unbelievable.

Sylvia took out her phone and directly called Tristan Sterling.

After two rings, the call connected.

"Mom, what’s up?"

"Did you agree to let Rachel Royce come to the house to take care of Melissa?" Sylvia’s tone was heavy.

Tristan said, "Taking care of Melissa is her duty."

Listening to her son, Sylvia couldn’t figure out what he was planning.

"She said she came back to divorce you. Tristan, what are you thinking? It looks to me like she’s deluding herself into thinking she can get a piece of your fortune."

She had never been able to figure out her son.

Tristan replied, "Is that so?"

Sylvia was about to say more, but he cut her off. "Mom, just stay out of this."

"Tristan!"

"You should head home, Mom. She’s watching Melissa."

’It wasn’t like she could control what her son did anyway.’

Sylvia hung up helplessly. After getting up to check on Melissa, she left the villa.

While Rachel was cooking, she received a call from Gabriel Gordon.

"Lawyer Gordon."

Gabriel Gordon said, "I just heard from the court. The other party has applied for offline mediation."

Rachel froze.

’What was there to mediate between them now?’

’What on earth was Tristan trying to do?’

"What do you think, Lawyer Gordon?"

"Did you two discuss this beforehand?"

"We exchanged a few words, but we didn’t reach an agreement. He doesn’t seem to want a divorce right now."

"In that case, let’s just stick to the official process. However, Miss Royce, you need to be careful not to have any financial transactions with him."

Rachel said, "I know."

’It’s not like they had any financial dealings to speak of anyway.’

When the weekend arrived, it was Florence Preston’s birthday. It was a small celebration, not a major one, so she didn’t invite many guests—just a family meal.

Around 11:00 AM, Rachel and Melissa left with their gift.

Miles Sheldon came to pick them up.

Melissa happily pulled Rachel into the car.

This past week, even though her dad wasn’t around, she had been happy every day.

When they arrived at the hotel, Rachel led Melissa by the hand into the lobby and saw two people talking ahead. She called out, "Brother."

Peter Preston and Suzanne Sullivan had just run into each other. Although they weren’t well acquainted and were even business competitors, they still exchanged pleasantries when they met. They had just shared a few polite words.

Hearing the call, both men turned around at the same time.

Rachel was holding Melissa’s small hand. The bright lobby light shone on the pair, one tall and one small, illuminating the bright, happy smiles on their faces.

In a flash, Suzanne felt as if he saw a familiar figure. His heart suddenly felt like it had been struck by something heavy, and an indescribable feeling washed over him.

As Rachel walked closer, she didn’t look at Suzanne. Instead, she looked at Peter and asked, "Brother, where are Mom and Dad?"

Hearing this, Suzanne subtly composed himself.

"Uncle Suzanne."

Melissa called out sweetly when she saw Suzanne.

Suzanne slowly crouched down, his gaze gentle as he looked at Melissa. "Hello, Melissa! It’s been a while."

"Hi, Uncle Suzanne."

Suzanne pulled a milk candy from his pocket.

Rachel watched without interrupting their greeting.

Peter received a call from Florence Preston.

He put down his phone. He said to Suzanne, "President Sullivan, we’ll be going now."

Suzanne stood up and grunted in acknowledgment.

"Melissa, let’s go."

Melissa waved goodbye to Suzanne.

From beginning to end, Rachel hadn’t exchanged a single word with Suzanne.

Peter scooped Melissa up into his arms, the affection for the little one unconcealable in his eyes.

Suzanne stood in place, watching the siblings’ retreating figures and the warm, happy aura they exuded, until they were far in the distance.

The inexplicable, heavy feeling in his heart didn’t dissipate for a long time.

"Brother."

Suzanne turned to see Claire Ainsworth approaching with her arm linked through Jane Sullivan’s.

The two women walked over.

Jane Sullivan asked her son, "What are you looking at?"

Suzanne, having already composed himself, said, "Nothing. Let’s go."

They had arranged to meet relatives from Kingsland here for a meal today.

Many people came to celebrate Florence Preston’s birthday today.

Naturally, Thomas Sterling was there. June Jennings brought Stella, which of course meant she brought her brother along too. Joanna Sutton and Ian Quinn were also present.

Florence was delighted that so many of Rachel’s friends had come to celebrate her birthday.

A large table of people enjoyed a lively lunch together.

Thomas Sterling, sitting next to Rachel, asked, "So you’ve been the one taking care of Melissa lately?"

He had also been away on business this week and only got back yesterday. That’s when he learned that Rachel had been staying at Silvermist Bay to take care of Melissa.

Rachel hummed in affirmation. "Tristan went abroad, and Melissa has private tutoring every day."

Thomas could understand Rachel’s position. After all, she finally had the chance to take care of Melissa as a mother and make up for lost time.

Last night, she had returned to the Sterling family home for dinner.

It seemed the Sterlings still didn’t know about Rachel’s situation.

She watched Melissa chatting happily with Stella. The children talked about things at school while the adults chimed in cheerfully.

"My cousin has rarely gone on such a long business trip without taking Melissa with him in all these years. Melissa is also getting more and more attached to you. If she finds out the truth about you, Rachel, what will you do?"

Hearing this, Rachel paused mid-bite. After a moment, she curved her lips into a smile and said, "I’ll deal with the future when it comes."

’At least for now, she was enjoying her time alone with Melissa.’

Thomas didn’t say anything more.

"Rachel, what are you two talking about?" June Jennings’s voice called out.

Rachel looked up, her gaze meeting Julian Jennings’s just as he looked over.
