Chapter 108: I Need to Speak with My Daughter Alone

After calming down, Rachel Royce released Melissa. "Melissa’s mommy has always loved her," she said. "She only left because she had no other choice, but she’ll definitely come back for you."

Melissa looked at Rachel Royce and raised her small hand to wipe the tears from her cheeks. "Aunt Evelynn, why are you crying?" she asked worriedly.

Rachel Royce took Melissa’s small hand. "I’m okay. Didn’t you want to draw? I’ll draw with you."

Melissa nodded happily in agreement.

The man at the door of the art room turned and left without a sound.

Rachel Royce stayed in the art room, drawing with Melissa.

Melissa’s earlier unhappiness had already vanished without a trace.

Downstairs, Tristan Sterling was sitting on the living room sofa when he received a call from Suzanne Sullivan.

"Since Melissa has company today, Claire and I won’t be going to the stables."

Tristan Sterling hummed in acknowledgment. "Then you should spend some quality time with her."

In the end, Suzanne Sullivan didn’t argue. "Got it," she said.

The call ended.

Tristan Sterling put down his phone and glanced upstairs.

「Noon.」

Lisa Lawson went upstairs to Melissa’s room. "Young Miss, it’s time for lunch."

Melissa was sitting alone on the sofa watching cartoons, a stuffed rabbit in her arms. She was playfully tugging on its fluffy little ears.

Rachel Royce was in the bathroom at the time.

"Grandma Lawson, bring lunch up for me and Aunt Evelynn."

Lisa Lawson walked over and sat beside Melissa. "Mr. Sterling is waiting for you in the dining room," she coaxed.

But Melissa was still mad at her dad. ’There’s no way I’m going downstairs!’

Lisa Lawson continued, "Melissa, Miss Claire is so good to you. How could you say something like that to her in front of an outsider?"

"You’ve only known that Aunt Evelynn for a short time. You need to be careful. She might be nice to you for a reason. What if she tries to hurt you?"

"..."

Before Lisa Lawson could finish, Melissa’s expression soured. "Don’t you talk about Aunt Evelynn like that!" she shouted. "Aunt Evelynn would never hurt me! Get out! Get out! I hate you now!"

Melissa started shoving Lisa Lawson, trying to make her leave.

Lisa Lawson hadn’t expected such an emotional reaction from Melissa.

Rachel Royce emerged from the bathroom and saw the scene unfolding.

"All right, all right, Grandma Lawson is leaving."

With an ugly expression, Lisa Lawson turned to walk out the door. When she saw Rachel Royce, she shot her a resentful glare.

Although Rachel Royce hadn’t heard what Lisa Lawson said to Melissa, she could tell from the girl’s words that the housekeeper had undoubtedly been speaking ill of her.

’That old nanny really hasn’t changed a bit.’

’It was bad enough when she used to make up lies about me in front of Tristan Sterling, but now she’s spouting nonsense in front of a child as young as Melissa.’

The look in Rachel Royce’s eyes instantly turned cold.

She walked over to Melissa and quickly calmed the agitated child.

Lisa Lawson reached the living room downstairs.

Tristan Sterling looked at her. "Where’s Melissa?"

Lisa Lawson said, "That Evelynn is really something else. The Young Miss trusts her so much. I just tried to remind the Young Miss not to be too trusting of an outsider, and she immediately started defending her and throwing a tantrum. Sir, you really can’t let the Young Miss keep interacting with this Evelynn. The Young Miss used to be such a well-behaved child."

She had cared for the Young Miss with all her heart and watched her grow up. The girl was always sensible and polite and had never once lost her temper with her. But now, she was being fierce to her for the sake of an outsider.

Tristan Sterling frowned, his voice turning cold. "Stick to your duties. Don’t say things you shouldn’t in front of Melissa."

Lisa Lawson saw the cold expression on his face.

She instantly understood what he meant.

Not daring to say another word, she replied, "Yes."

Tristan Sterling stood up and headed upstairs.

He arrived at Melissa’s room.

Melissa was leaning obediently against Rachel Royce, watching her braid a doll’s hair.

Upon seeing Tristan Sterling, Rachel Royce’s hands froze mid-action.

Melissa looked up at her father, then turned her head away, ignoring him.

Tristan Sterling walked forward, looked at Rachel Royce, and said, "I need to speak with my daughter alone."

Rachel Royce glanced at the man but didn’t respond to him. Instead, she said softly to Melissa, "I’ll be waiting for you outside."

Melissa nodded.

Rachel Royce handed the doll to Melissa, then got up, walked out, and closed the door behind her.

She went downstairs.

There, she saw Lisa Lawson.

Lisa Lawson was about to head into the kitchen.

"Stop right there."

Lisa Lawson stopped in her tracks. Looking up at Rachel Royce’s frigid expression, she couldn’t help but shudder. "What do you want?"

Rachel Royce slowly walked up to Lisa Lawson, her cold eyes looking down. "I’d just like to ask you, what is your position in this house? Who exactly are you to their Young Miss?"

Lisa Lawson’s expression darkened. "What does that have to do with you, Miss Evelynn? But whatever my relationship with the Young Miss is, it’s definitely closer than that of an outsider like you."

Rachel Royce scoffed. "It seems you’re the one who isn’t clear on the matter. Why don’t I tell you? You’re nothing more than a nanny in this house. Don’t think that just because you’ve been kept on for a long time, you’ve suddenly risen in status and earned the right to lecture the masters of the house."

"You... That’s still better than an outsider like you—AH!"

Rachel Royce raised her hand and slapped her across the face.

Lisa Lawson clutched her cheek, staring at Rachel Royce with wide, disbelieving eyes. "You... You dare to hit me."

"You were bad-mouthing me behind my back. You think I shouldn’t have hit you?"

Lisa Lawson was so furious her vision turned red. She had been with the Sterling Family for so many years; even the young miss of the Ainsworth Family always treated her with a measure of respect.

’How dare this woman, who came from who-knows-where, hit her?’

She lunged forward to strike back.

Rachel Royce sidestepped on the balls of her feet and hooked her leg out.

"OOF!"

Lisa Lawson’s old bones hit the ground hard, and she cried out in pain.

Frances Wyatt and the other servants in the dining room heard the commotion and hurried into the living room, where they saw Lisa Lawson sprawled motionless on the floor.

"Lisa!"

Frances Wyatt and another servant rushed forward to help Lisa Lawson up.

Just as Frances Wyatt was staring at Rachel Royce, about to berate her, the elevator doors opened.

Tristan Sterling walked out, carrying Melissa in his arms. The little girl’s eyes were red, but she had calmed down.

"Sir," Frances Wyatt called out.

Tristan Sterling looked from the pale-faced Lisa Lawson, who was being held up, to the composed and fearless woman standing nearby. He then said to Frances Wyatt, "Take Mrs. Lawson downstairs to rest."

"Sir, she..."

Frances Wyatt tried to continue her complaint.

But the man’s dark eyes narrowed slightly, and Frances Wyatt didn’t dare say another word. She and the other servant helped Lisa Lawson turn and leave.

Melissa slid down from Tristan Sterling’s arms and took Rachel Royce’s hand. "Aunt Evelynn, let’s go eat lunch."

Rachel Royce glanced at the man, then followed Melissa to the dining room.

Melissa pulled out a chair for Rachel Royce. "Aunt Evelynn, sit here."

Rachel Royce picked Melissa up and settled her into her booster seat.

Tristan Sterling entered the dining room and took his seat at the head of the table.

"Aunt Evelynn, after lunch we’ll go play at the stables! Just me, Daddy, and you, Aunt Evelynn. Just the three of us."

Melissa said to Rachel Royce, her tone full of excitement.

Between Melissa and Claire Ainsworth, Tristan Sterling had chosen Melissa. Of course, that didn’t mean he didn’t care about Claire.

Rachel Royce had no choice but to agree. "Okay."

During lunch, there was no communication between Rachel Royce and Tristan Sterling. Rachel wouldn’t even spare the man a glance, leaving Melissa to carry the conversation.

Melissa, however, was sharp enough to notice. She looked at her father and asked disapprovingly, "Daddy, why aren’t you talking to Aunt Evelynn?"

Rachel Royce froze.
