The Husband I Loved for Eight Years Never Loved Me-Chapter 100: Carrying Her in His Arms
Chapter 100: Sweeping Her Up into His Arms
"What have I done to feel guilty about?" Rachel Royce retorted, annoyed.
"If you have nothing to feel guilty about, what are you afraid of?"
"What am I afraid of?"
"Who knows what you’re afraid of."
"..."
Rachel Royce’s stomach was already hurting, and his provocations only made it worse. ’This bastard is deliberately trying to make my life difficult.’
She desperately wanted to curse him out and slap him across the face, but she just didn’t have the energy.
So she decided to ignore him and walked out, striding right past him.
Suddenly, the man’s voice sounded from behind her again. "I never thought Miss Evelynn’s marriage was in such a terrible state. Have you ever considered that you might be the problem?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Rachel stopped in her tracks. A surge of anger flared in her chest. She spun around to face him, suppressing her fury. "Any man with even a shred of conscience wouldn’t say something like that. It’s a true tragedy for whatever woman is married to you."
Tristan Sterling stared at her, his dark eyes turning cold.
Rachel ignored him and returned to the private room. She apologized to the group, explaining that she wasn’t feeling well and had to leave early.
Seeing that her complexion was indeed off, the executive from Cedarwood said nothing more and urged her to go home and get some rest.
Rachel grabbed her bag and left the room.
But as soon as she stepped out, she ran into Tristan Sterling again.
Rachel glanced at him, then looked away and quickly turned to leave.
She had already called Miles Sheldon and asked him to drive over and pick her up.
Just as she reached the elevators, she suddenly had to brace herself against the wall, one hand pressed to her lower abdomen. She had pushed through the discomfort and walked too quickly, and now the pain was even worse. She leaned against the wall for a moment, trying to catch her breath.
After a moment, she walked to the elevator and pressed the down button.
The elevator arrived just then.
She stepped inside.
Just as she pressed the "close" button and the doors were sliding shut, they suddenly slid open again. When she looked up, she saw the man standing before the elevator.
Rachel stared at him.
The man glanced down at her impassively, then walked straight into the elevator.
Rachel quietly took a deep breath and retreated to the corner, leaning her body against the wall.
The tall man stood with his back to her, one hand in his pocket. The atmosphere in the quiet space was suffocating.
Through the clean, reflective panel in front of him, he could clearly see the woman behind him. Her head was down, her hand resting on the handrail. She looked utterly listless, as if all the life had been drained out of her in an instant.
The elevator reached the ground floor.
DING.
The elevator doors opened.
As Tristan Sterling stepped out, he saw someone waiting in front of the elevator.
Thomas Sterling saw who was inside and paused for a second before calling out, "Cousin, you’re having dinner here too?"
Tristan Sterling grunted in acknowledgment.
Then Thomas saw Rachel emerge from behind Tristan. He immediately noticed her pale complexion and subconsciously rushed forward to support her. "Rach—" He stopped himself just as the name was about to leave his lips.
"Are you alright? What’s wrong?"
Rachel gently shook her head. "I’m fine. You should get back to what you were doing."
"It’s nothing important. I’ll take you home first."
As Thomas turned to say something to the person he was with, his gaze met Tristan’s bottomless dark eyes.
His heart tightened.
But he couldn’t be bothered with that right now. He said a quick word to his companion, then addressed Tristan, "Cousin, I’m heading out now."
With that, Thomas bent down and swept Rachel right up into his arms.
Rachel gasped in surprise. She wanted to tell him to put her down, but she had no strength and didn’t want to argue with Thomas right there.
And just like that, Thomas strode away, carrying Rachel in his arms.
Rachel kept her head down, not once looking at Tristan, but she could distinctly feel his sharp, cold gaze fixed on them.
She didn’t look up. Only after Thomas had carried her a good distance away did her tightly wound heart finally begin to relax.
Thomas settled Rachel into his car. He breathed a sigh of relief when he learned she was just on her period, but then he smelled the alcohol on her and couldn’t help but chide, "You knew your period was coming, and you still drank?"
Leaning back in the passenger seat, Rachel said wearily, "Alright, let’s just go."
Thomas sighed in resignation, closed her door, walked around the front of the car, and got into the driver’s seat to drive away.
Perhaps it was because of the alcohol she drank, but the pain in her lower abdomen grew increasingly severe.
Thomas immediately turned the car around and took her to the hospital.
While they were on the way, Miles Sheldon called, and Rachel told him to go home.
At the hospital.
After an examination, the doctor put Rachel on an IV drip.
Thomas stayed by her side and ordered some warm millet congee for her.
Rachel leaned against the hospital bed as the IV fluid dripped. The pain in her abdomen wasn’t as bad as before.
Thomas fed her the congee. Seeing that her complexion had improved, he remarked, "Of all the luck, you had to run into my cousin."
They had barely eaten at the dinner; it was mostly drinking. Rachel took a spoonful of the warm congee. "It wasn’t a coincidence," she said. "It was a business dinner with Cedarwood."
’She hadn’t expected Tristan to be at that dinner.’
Thomas was puzzled. "A dinner with Cedarwood?"
Rachel briefly explained why.
Thomas said, "It sounds like you’ll be running into each other a lot at work from now on."
Rachel replied, "Seeing each other is probably unavoidable. I expected as much."
’She had thought that when she returned and they met again, their interactions would be limited to polite business formalities at most. She hadn’t expected any further contact.’
’She just hadn’t expected that bastard to have it in for her, antagonizing her at every turn.’
’Just thinking about it made her stomach hurt with anger.’
Thomas asked her about the divorce from Tristan.
Rachel replied, "The court date is still half a month away."
In all this time, Lawyer Walsh hadn’t received any news from Tristan’s side.
Thomas hummed in acknowledgment, but thinking about his cousin’s personality and way of doing things, he couldn’t help but feel a little uneasy.
Just then, Rachel’s phone started to vibrate.
It was a call from Florence Preston, asking when her dinner would be over.
"It’s almost over. I’ll let you know before I head back, Mom."
"Alright. Take care of yourself, and don’t drink too much."
"I know, Mom."
Florence offered a few more words of caution before hanging up.
Thomas finished feeding her the entire bowl of congee. The warmth in her stomach made her feel much more comfortable.
「An hour later.」
The IV drip was finished.
Thomas helped Rachel out of the hospital.
Once they were in the car, Thomas drove back to Hillcrest Villa.
「The next day.」
Rachel didn’t go to the office and rested at home instead.
She spent most of the day in bed, and Florence brought her meals to the bedroom.
「In the afternoon.」
June Jennings came to see Rachel, bringing her daughter Stella along. She brought a huge pile of health supplements, as well as some nice things she’d found in Athera and hadn’t had a chance to give her yet.
A driver carried them into the villa, box after box.
June Jennings didn’t have a job. Besides raising her child, she spent her time traveling, shopping, and then giving her purchases away to everyone.
This time, she brought Rachel two cheongsams and custom-made hairpins with matching jewelry sets.
After having her child, June Jennings had lost her figure. She had a roll of fat around her waist, and her once slender, oval face had become rounder. She had no motivation to lose the weight, but whenever she saw beautiful clothes, she couldn’t resist buying them, only to end up giving them all to Rachel. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Rachel felt helpless. It wasn’t that she hadn’t tried to talk her out of it, but it was no use.
This was June’s only hobby these days.
With two more people in the house, it suddenly became much livelier.
Florence had met Stella before, but that was two years ago. Looking at the pretty little girl, she couldn’t help but sigh, "In the blink of an eye, Stella’s gotten so big! She looks just like her mother. So beautiful."
Stella was also quite fascinated by Bobby.
Florence took Stella outside to play, leaving June and Rachel to chat alone.
"I’m so glad nothing serious happened to you. Joanna said your car accident scared her half to death. Thank goodness it was just a few scrapes. I never realized your job was so high-risk."
"It was just an accident. I’ll be more careful from now on. But it’s all thanks to your peace charm that I made it through with just a scare."
"See? It really works! We should go get a few more next time."
"Okay."
"Still, I should have my brother assign a few more bodyguards to you."
Rachel smiled faintly. "Now you’re just exaggerating. Are you going to assign bodyguards to every employee who goes on a business trip?"
June grinned. "Well, you’re different, of course!"
Rachel held up a hand to stop her. "Hold it. Don’t say things like that."
