Concerned for her own son, Gu Ya.
In the afternoon, Mrs. An arrived at the room of her son, Gu Ya, and his wife, Su Yunjin. Gu Ya was taking his medicine, which Su Yunjin had prepared and brought to him.
“Mother!” Gu Ya set down the medicine in his hands and looked at Mrs. An.
Mrs. An saw her son taking his medicine and quickly said, “Yaya, don’t worry about me, taking your medicine is important.”
Gu Ya continued taking his medicine, and Su Yunjin moved a stool for Mrs. An.
“Mother, please sit!”
Mrs. An sat down on the stool and sighed continuously as she thought about her son Gu Ya’s leg, “Yaya, if your leg really ends up useless, what will you and Yunjin do for a living in the future?”
After discussing, Gu Chengxiang and Mrs. An both decided to go to the market to find another doctor with better medical skills to treat Gu Ya’s leg.
“Youngest son, your mother and father have discussed it, and in a couple days, your mother will visit your second sister to borrow some silver. Then we’ll go to the market to find a better doctor who could possibly heal your leg,” Gu Ya’s second sister Gu Hengniang was married to a butcher in the neighboring village and was fairly well-off.
They never ran out of rice or meat throughout the year.
The Gu Family had needed money several times and had always gone to borrow it from Gu Ya’s second sister, Gu Hengniang.
Gu Hengniang’s family was quite prosperous and did not worry about food or clothing. However, Gu Hengniang faced many difficulties at her husband’s home because she had given birth to two daughters in succession without having a son, causing her mother-in-law to make things very difficult for her.
In the previous instances when Mrs. An went to borrow money from her second daughter, the first time her daughter asked her husband’s family, but she was secretly beaten by her husband several times for it.
Afterward, for the next two times, Gu Hengniang secretly scraped together the money to lend to her mother.
When Mrs. An mentioned borrowing money from Gu Hengniang again, Gu Ya glanced at his young wife and decided to tell Mrs. An that his leg was actually alright.
“Mother, my leg is actually fine now! You don’t need to find a doctor for me anymore. Besides, my second sister’s life at her husband’s home is difficult. We should avoid troubling her further.”
Previously, Gu Ya had agreed with his young wife not to tell his mother the news that his leg was fine in order to split from the Gu Family, fearing that his sisters-in-law, Mrs. Zhang and Mrs. Han, who were both difficult people, would not agree to the separation if they knew his leg was alright.
Nevertheless, he had now split from the Gu Family.
Therefore, he could tell his mother the news that his leg was fine.
Gu Ya told his mother the truth, but Mrs. An did not believe him, “Youngest son, is your leg truly alright? You’re not deceiving your mother, are you? Didn’t Doctor Liu say that both of your legs were broken and couldn’t be reattached?”
Gu Ya looked at his young wife, seeing no objection from her.
He then continued to speak to Mrs. An, “Mother, my legs are really fine now, thanks to Yunjin’s efforts.”
Mrs. An, a decent mother-in-law, saw that Gu Ya’s leg, thanks to Su Yunjin, was healed, and she had no intention of continuing to hide this fact from her mother-in-law. She joined Gu Ya in saying, “Mother, what my husband has said is all true. Indeed, I have managed to heal his leg! Right now, my husband cannot walk on it yet, but with a period of rest and recovery, he will be completely healed! There will be no problems at all, just like before.”
Mrs. An was so shocked she couldn’t speak!
Was her son Gu Ya’s leg truly healed?
To convince his mother, Mrs. An, Gu Ya moved the legs that his young wife had set right in front of her.
“Mother, look.”
“Youngest son, your legs…?” Mrs. An looked at her son’s moving legs with joy and excitement.
“This is wonderful, it’s truly wonderful! Youngest son, the fact that you can move your legs is such great news.”
