The Heiress Spoiled by Four Brothers and One Devilish CEO-Chapter 246 The Lie That Saved a Life
Tristan glanced at the sly smile on her face and chuckled, "Didn’t expect Emily to pull that off. She was pretty convincing."
Megan beamed. "Of course. Who do you think trained her? I made her rehearse the whole thing like ten times yesterday."
Tristan’s eyes briefly flicked to her stomach. "Well, she’s safe for now. But you? Still in the danger zone."
Megan looked out at the melting snow trickling down the window. "Even the thickest ice melts in the sun. Even the cleverest tricks slip up eventually. Lies? They never stay hidden forever."
Tristan’s eyes dimmed slightly. Yeah, lies had a way of biting back eventually.
Megan leaned in close, her sharp eyes narrowing, "Be honest. You ever lied to me?"
"Never. You catch on too fast anyway." Tristan’s voice was firm as a rock.
She laughed, snuggling into his arm. "I mean, with how much my man loves me, how could he ever lie, right?"
Tristan just let out a soft "mm."
Meanwhile, Samuel’s car tore down the road. He didn’t even slow down for the turns and had already run three red lights.
Megan let out a low whistle. "Wow, Fourth Brother’s really losing it. Hope his license points can handle the punishment."
Tristan grinned, "We’re fine. Let them sweat a bit."
Samuel clenched the wheel tightly, sweat running down the sides of his face. He glanced in the rearview mirror. "Hang on, Emily. Almost there."
Emily remembered what Megan told her—she had to commit to the act all the way into the hospital or it’d all fall apart.
Feeling a bit guilty, she buried her face deeper into Brandon Lewis’s chest.
Brandon’s eyes were red, his fingers trembling slightly as he patted her back. "It’s okay... It’s gonna be okay. Even if something happens this time, we’ll try again if we have to, alright?"
Emily bit her lip hard. After a while, she forced out a shaky, "Yeah."
Brandon had done plenty of surgeries before, even tricky brain surgeries, and never once had his hands shaken.
But right now, it wasn’t just his hands—his whole body was trembling. It hit him just as hard as when she took that bullet for him.
He thought she’d just carved a place in his heart, but really, she was etched into his soul.
Samuel glanced at the rearview again, not seeing Tristan’s car anywhere. "Seriously? At a time like this, he’s playing by the rules? Doesn’t he get someone’s life’s on the line?"
Hearing that, Emily tucked herself in tighter.
They pulled up at the Lindon City Hospital.
Samuel jumped out, yanked open the back door. Brandon quickly lifted Emily into his arms and rushed into the ER.
A crowd of doctors and nurses ran up. "What happened?"
Brandon gently laid Emily on the bed. "Threatened miscarriage."
The curtain pulled across, blocking Brandon from seeing her. That moment hit him like a truck—sharp, raw, and way too real.
Moments later, the ER doors opened and a doctor strode out. "Who’s with the patient?"
"I am," Brandon stepped forward.
"I’m sorry. We couldn’t save the baby. We’ll need to perform a D&C and admit her to the hospital."
Brandon froze—it felt like the world just exploded inside his head. He’d played out the worst-case scenarios over and over, but hearing it for real? The blow was instant.
"I’ll take care of the paperwork," Samuel looked at Brandon. "Stay with her."Brandon Lewis kept reassuring Emily as they wheeled her toward the OR with the nurse.
He told her the baby probably just didn’t develop properly, and losing it had nothing to do with her.
Gripping her freezing hand, he said softly, "We’ll have another chance, don’t carry this guilt alone. I’ll be right outside waiting for you."
Watching Emily disappear into the OR, Brandon’s face clouded with sorrow.
He slumped onto the waiting bench, legs apart, elbows resting on his knees, the whole picture screaming defeat.
Samuel arrived in a hurry after dealing with the paperwork. But the moment he saw Brandon like that, all slouched and drained, his brisk steps slowed to a quiet walk.
He sank down beside his brother and glanced sideways.
This was a man fueled by pride, the kind of confidence that came from always solving his problems neatly. But now, that confidence had taken a beating.
Samuel could feel it—the helplessness, that foreign sense of vulnerability quietly hovering over Brandon since Emily got shot. But this time, it was even heavier.
Brandon let out a bitter chuckle. "Sam, I’ve done so many surgeries, saved so many lives. But when it comes to my own kid... I couldn’t do a damn thing. Just stood there watching life slip away."
"Bro... I’ve never been a dad, but I get where you’re coming from. Still, don’t beat yourself up too much. You and Emily are still young."
"Yeah, I know. I’m just scared she won’t recover from this."
Time ticked by, minute after minute.
Then, Tristan and Megan came rushing in.
Samuel stood up abruptly, annoyed. "Took you long enough."
Megan asked, "Is it that urgent?"
"No kidding! This isn’t something small!"
She gave his shoulder a pat. "There’s still a chance we can find Emily, don’t give up yet."
Samuel frowned, "How can you be so chill at a time like this?"
Megan dropped down beside Brandon and patted the empty seat next to her. "Come on, sit here and breathe for a sec."
Samuel sighed and sat too. "You and Emily are super close—so how are you not freaking out right now?"
Megan calmly placed her hand on her belly. "Of course I’m worried if something really happened."
Brandon’s head snapped toward her. "Wait—you mean nothing actually did?"
Megan crooked a finger; Brandon leaned in skeptically.
"Ow!"
She flicked his forehead with a grin. "Would you look at that, Mr. Cool and Collected got tricked by his brother!"
Brandon shot her a glare and adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his brows furrowed. "Spill."
Megan caught his frosty expression and immediately tried to ease the tension.
"Are you mad?"
"Yeah."
"We did it for the baby’s safety."
"Yeah."
Seeing how he went full silent mode, Megan couldn’t help but chuckle. "Alright, let me break it down for you."
She pulled out her phone and showed them a surveillance recording.
Samuel’s jaw dropped. "Wait—did our big bro know about this?"
"Of course," Megan nodded. "We had to keep you two in the dark to make it believable."
Samuel twitched. "So basically we were the last to know?"
"Not just you two. The parents, grandpa, and Emily didn’t know either."
Brandon paused for a moment, still confused. "But... we haven’t even had any tainted food lately. Why stage all this?"
