Chapter 190: Chapter 190 He Came Back Broken

The man’s eyes were as cold as ice, his teeth clenched tight with an audible click. Without a word, he kicked the woman in front of him to the ground.

Wrapping his robe tightly around himself, he murmured, "Get out."

The woman scrambled to grab her nightgown off the floor, covering herself as she fled the room in a panic.

He walked over to the leather chair, lit a cigar and took a heavy drag. The bitter smoke filled the room instantly.

"What’s going on?" he asked coolly.

The man in black stood stiffly, his head slightly lowered as sweat beaded on his forehead. "Everything’s gone. Weapons, people—wiped out."

He froze, frowning deeply. With a grim look, he pressed the cigar hard into the ashtray. "Do we have a lead?"

"There’s talk that King is behind it. Two days ago, someone saw him with a guy who looked kinda androgynous."

"King again? How the hell is he everywhere?" he snapped, rage burning in his voice. "Find out who that guy was. Details—any features you can get."

"Yes, sir."

"Any word from Jacob?"

"All quiet on that end."

He inhaled deeply through his nose. "What about Amelia?"

"She’s been taken care of. Everything’s set, boss."

He waved him off. The man took three steps back before turning and slipping out the door.

Grabbing his phone, he dialed a number. "The base is gone. King did it. I’m sorry."

After a moment, a hoarse voice replied, "Then what good are you?"

The calm voice felt like a chill crawling straight from hell. His heart raced.

"Give me another shot. I swear I won’t let you down again."

A cold laugh echoed from the other end, eerie and mocking. "Sylvester, this is your last shot. You know as well as I do—I’m never short on pawns, especially useful ones."

"...Understood." His voice was barely above a whisper. As the line went dead, he hurled the phone at the wall. It shattered into pieces.

Damn King. He’d tear him apart one day.

The next morning, a sleek private jet touched down smoothly on a gleaming runway.

Tristan stepped off the plane, adjusting his coat and glancing back at Karl. "Have another word with Jacob. Maybe there’s still something he’s hiding."

With that, he turned and headed for a black Bentley waiting nearby. Cameron and Zeta Prime followed close behind.

Keith watched the car pull away and muttered, "Boss, is it just me, or does Tristan treat you like his assistant?"

Karl cast him a side-eye. "Talk less."

Inside the Bentley, heading toward Lindon City, Zeta Prime made a cheerful noise. "Oh yay! Zeta Prime’s gonna see Goddess soon!"

Tristan looked pale, probably from blood loss. He leaned slightly, giving the bot a side glance. "That’s my wife you’re talking about. Why are you so excited? Wanna me to build you a robot girlfriend or something?"

Zeta Prime’s synthetic eyes lit up. "Oooh, can I be a humanoid bot? And could my robot girlfriend be just like the little fairy?"

Tristan lit a cigarette, letting the nicotine dull the leftover pain where the anesthetic wore off.

"Keep dreaming. The Alliance forbids making humanoid bots. If they catch you, they’ll tear you apart."

Zeta Prime scratched its big metal head. "But I wanna be cool like you, boss—and having a girlfriend like her would just make life perfect."Tristan let out a light chuckle. "You’ve got a longer shelf life than most humans. When the Alliance finally allows it, go ahead and upgrade yourself."

Zeta Prime put on an exaggeratedly devoted face. "The day my master’s gone, Zeta Prime will go with him."

"Drama queen," Tristan smirked. "Now hush, I need a nap."

An hour later, the car rolled up to the old Lewis estate.

By the window, watching the snowy scene outside, Megan caught sight of a familiar license plate. Her eyes lit up. She grabbed her puffer jacket and bolted down the stairs, still in fluffy slippers.

She flung the door open and dashed out.

Tristan was already striding toward her, and without a word, pulled her into his arms.

She buried her face against his chest, rubbing softly into him, breathing in the scent clinging to him. "You smoked?"

Tristan paused for a moment. "Hold on, let me take off my coat."

Megan sniffled. "No, let me hug you a little longer."

"You’re not dressed for the cold. I’ll carry you in," he said and gently lifted her up.

"You’re hurt—your back’s injured—put me down," she protested.

As she fidgeted to get out of his arms, he gently pressed a kiss to her forehead. "Be good. Just let me hold you for a minute."

"Hey pretty lady! I’m here too!" Zeta Prime waved its mechanical arm dramatically.

Next to it stood Cameron, also waving, but staying quiet—he knew full well that Lord Reid didn’t like any man upstaging him around Megan. Zeta Prime, on the other hand, had the loophole of not being human.

Outside the doorway, Stella puffed out some white breath in the chilly air as she scolded with a mix of concern, "This girl, everything flies out the window once her man shows up. It’s freezing—what if she catches cold? And running like that too! Did you forget you’re pregnant?!"

Megan nestled against Tristan’s shoulder, the corners of her lips lifted into a big, happy grin. "I’m just that thrilled he’s back."

"She’s been waiting for you every day. I bet she hasn’t even eaten yet. I’ll go make some porridge."

"Thanks, Mom," Tristan said with a nod.

As Stella watched them head upstairs, her eyes softened, forming faint smile lines.

Then she turned and spotted Zeta Prime, who grinned mischievously. "Madam! Need a hand with that porridge? Zeta Prime’s a certified potato-peeling ninja!" 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

In the room, Tristan gently laid Megan down on the bed.

She got up right away and started taking off his coat.

"Someone’s in a hurry, huh?"

She shrugged off his suit and shirt layer by layer. The white dress shirt on his back was already stained red in spots.

Walking around behind him, she spotted the bloody gauze. "Seriously, you just had to carry me? Now your wound’s bleeding again. The stitches must’ve ripped."

Right as he shifted to turn toward her, Megan’s voice thick with concern said, "Don’t move. Let me check."

"Please don’t."

There was a rare note of vulnerability in his voice. He didn’t want her to worry. Originally, he planned to stay at the Dreamscape Manor until he was in better shape, just so she wouldn’t see him like this. But he missed her too much—he came straight here after landing.

"Sit still," she said, pushing him gently down on the edge of the bed. "I’m calling my brother."

She dashed out the room and knocked hard on Brandon’s door.

A moment later, the door opened. "Megan? What’s wrong?"

"Tristan’s wound opened up again. Come quick."

"I’ll grab the med kit," Brandon said, ducking back in to grab the case before following her. "Let’s go."

Seeing Megan return with Brandon, Tristan tried to play it off. "It’s not that bad. Calling in Brandon makes it sound like I’m being dramatic."

Brandon pushed his glasses up and gave him a dry look. "You’ve gotten real good at playing the victim lately."
