The Heiress Spoiled by Four Brothers and One Devilish CEO-Chapter 147 I Was Five The First Time I Laid Eyes on Her
Inside the security passage of the Reid Group, the man hid the gun in a ventilation shaft, then swapped into the building’s janitor uniform and slipped out unnoticed.
After exiting the building, he joined up with a few people from NexusStar.
"Why’d the boss call off the mission?"
Keith smirked. "Maybe he’s gone soft over a pretty face."
The man chuckled. "That’s not a good sign. The boss never fumbled because of a woman... but looks like this one might’ve got to him. Keith, maybe give him a heads-up when you can."
Keith nodded. "Yeah, I’ll talk to him."
The two quickly disappeared around the corner.
Taking the winding road up the mountain, a black Volkswagen climbed to the top where a white three-story villa came into view.
Karl was seated in a leather chair outside the villa, holding a hunting rifle, aiming at two snarling wolves locked in an iron cage.
The wolves growled low and pounded hard against the bars.
"Boss."
Karl squinted his phoenix eyes, then pulled the trigger.
With a loud bang, the wolf on the left dropped dead, letting out a few whimpers before going still. The other one recoiled into a corner, spooked and trembling.
Karl tossed the rifle to Keith. "Finish off the other one."
Keith loaded and took aim without flinching and pulled the trigger.
He handed the rifle to another man and followed Karl into the villa.
Karl jerked his chin toward the seating. "Take a seat."
Keith sprawled out on the sofa and leaned back lazily. "Boss, you’re different now."
Karl had a cigarette between his lips, flipping open a metal lighter with his fingers, the orange-blue flame flickering in and out. "Different how?"
"Because of her?"
Karl looked up lazily as smoke curled around him. "I knew I liked her the first time I saw her."
Keith lit a cig and took a deep drag. "You’ve only been back a short while and already in over your head?"
"I was five the first time I laid eyes on her."
Keith coughed hard. "Five?! So that’s why you’ve sworn off women all these years. But, man, that woman’s married."
Karl took another puff. "She’ll be mine eventually."
He gave Keith a sidelong glance. "Tomorrow, mix something in for that old guy. Time for him to go."
Keith froze. "You sure? Offing him just like that might raise red flags."
Karl stubbed out his cigarette. "I can’t risk him spilling the truth. Tristan’s already getting suspicious about who I am."
With that, he turned and headed up the stairs.
Back in his room, Karl lay on the bed. As soon as he closed his eyes, the memory of a delicate little girl’s face merged with Megan’s in his mind.
He suddenly opened his eyes, grabbed his phone, and stared at her photo with a quiet smile.
So she really was Landon Haynes. Didn’t expect that. Clever girl.
At that moment, the clever girl herself was sitting next to Tristan, watching as he worked on fixing up Nova Tech.
"The chip’s fine. Just needs a full-body rebuild."
Megan looked at him expectantly. "Can you make it look exactly the same?"
"Yup. Don’t worry. It’ll take about two days."
Her eyes lit up. "Only two?" She held his face and planted a big kiss. "You’re the best, babe!"Zeta Prime let out a sigh. "Being with the lady is like a full-body workout for Master—drains both your liver and kidneys."
Catching Tristan’s deadly glare, Zeta Prime yelped and bolted.
Just then, the phone on the table buzzed.
Tristan picked it up. "Any update?"
Cameron replied, "The police found a sniper rifle in the air duct, but no prints on it. The scene was a mess—nothing suspicious turned up."
"Did they find Soth’s main base?"
"The informant said the bomb base is super well-hidden and they keep moving it. Still looking."
Tristan rubbed his temples. "Once they locate it, tip off the police. Our people stay out of it."
"Got it, sir."
Noticing Tristan’s furrowed brows, Megan asked, "What’s going on?"
"This shooting was clearly meant for Landon Haynes. Looks like the same person behind the security tunnel incident. But he could’ve easily made another move during all that chaos—he didn’t. That means he knows you are Landon."
Tristan gently gripped her chin. "I don’t think he wants to hurt you."
His eyes narrowed slightly. "He’s into you."
Megan gave a short laugh. "Guy must need a brain scan. Who in their right mind falls for a cold-blooded, heartless killer?"
Tristan pulled her into his arms, a trace of unease in his eyes. "Promise me you’ll never leave me."
Megan looked up and kissed the side of his neck. "You’re stuck with me for life. Even if you don’t want me, I’ll hang on."
A storm of emotion surged in Tristan’s dark eyes.
He dipped down and claimed her lips, lingering as if he couldn’t bear to let go.
After a while, Megan buried her face in his shoulder, chuckling softly. "You scared I’ll run off with him or something?"
Tristan held her shoulders, his voice serious. "Whatever happens, we do not part. Ever."
Megan saw how sincere he was and held out her pinky. "Come on, pinky swear. We stay together forever. Break it and you’re a puppy."
Tristan linked his pinky with hers. "Deal."
He ruffled her hair. "Let’s keep building Nova Tech."
Megan sat down next to him, helping him bring the mechanical dog to life again.
He stayed holed up in the lab the whole evening, even eating dinner right there. It wasn’t until Megan got sleepy and dragged him upstairs that they finally left the lab.
At dawn, as the first rays of sunlight sneaked past the curtains, Megan stirred and reached out—just cold sheets.
Her eyes flew open. Tristan was gone.
She threw on her robe and ran to the room on the east side of the first floor, heading straight for the underground lab.
Sure enough, Tristan was still there, working away.
Hearing her quick steps, he turned around and rolled his neck. "You’re up?"
Seeing the red in his eyes, Megan felt her heart clutch. She rushed over and hugged his head. "You dummy, you stayed up all night again?"
"I’m not tired."
She cupped his face, noticing the dark circles beneath his eyes. "Yeah right, tell that to your eye bags."
"I just didn’t want you to stress."
"Zeta Prime told me this is what he meant by blowing your liver out. I’m not stressed, but I won’t let you wreck your health either."
Tristan took her hand. "It’s okay, babe. I’m really fine."
The phone vibrated again.
Tristan glanced at the screen—caller: Brandon.
He answered, and within a second, his face darkened.
