Chapter 111: Chapter 111 Mr. Shaw’s Got A Toxin in His Blood

Late September brought a chill in the air, and the light drizzle slid down the windshield, wiped away rhythmically by the moving wipers.

Tristan and Megan stepped out of the car with baseball caps and masks on, heading straight for the VIP exit.

A luxury jet landed at the vast Imperial Capital Airport.

A sharp-suited man stepped through the VIP lane, his assistant Emily following behind, carrying a small box.

He had delicate features and wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses that made him look every bit the refined gentleman.

The moment he spotted Tristan, a slight smile tugged at his lips, and he raised a hand in greeting. But when his eyes fell on Megan, there was a flicker of surprise—quick but noticeable.

As they got closer, Tristan pulled him into a big, familiar hug. "Long time no see, Brandon."

"It’s only been six months, don’t make it sound like years."

"You’ve got something going on, haven’t you?"

Brandon chuckled, "My assistant. Hired her while I was still in school."

He gave Tristan’s back a friendly pat. "And this is your wife? The one who ran off?"

"You really had to bring that up?" Tristan laughed under his breath. "This is my wife, Megan. Megan, meet Brandon, third son of the Lewis family."

Megan gave a subtle smile as she looked at the guy who could’ve walked out of a comic book. "Nice to meet you, Mr. Lewis."

Brandon nodded. "Good to meet you. Your name’s come up before—you not only ditched Tristan back then, but you’re also the first to turn down my brother."

Turn down his brother?

Megan quickly guessed he must be referring to that charity banquet incident—when she rejected that 600-million-dollar necklace gift from Jason.

"I just didn’t think accepting something that valuable was right," she replied calmly.

Brandon chuckled softly. "Let’s head to the hospital first, check on Mr. Shaw’s condition."

"You don’t want to rest up for a bit?" Megan asked.

Brandon looked over at Tristan. "Come on, don’t be fake. If I said I needed rest, you’d be dragging me in your head already."

With a smirk, Tristan patted his shoulder. "Alright then, let’s go. Cameron’s waiting outside."

As the two walked ahead, arms around each other like longtime buddies, Brandon turned his head with a mock sigh, "What, I can’t ride with you guys anymore?"

Tristan pulled Megan tighter against him, raising an eyebrow at Brandon. "Dude, read the room. Two’s company, three’s a crowd."

His gaze then flicked to the petite girl hovering behind Brandon. "Make that four’s a riot."

Emily’s face turned crimson as she hugged the box tighter and lowered her head.

Two cars pulled up outside the Capital Hospital.

Because Brandon had given the hospital director a heads-up about today’s diagnosis, news of his return had already spread.

The hospital director and a team of specialists were already waiting at the entrance.

As soon as he saw him, the director smiled and came down the steps quickly, shaking Brandon’s hand. "Must’ve been tough studying abroad. Appreciate your hard work."

Brandon calmly withdrew his hand. "Not really. Got a lot out of it—especially in hematology. Let’s chat later. Right now, I’m here for Mr. Shaw’s diagnosis. Hope the hospital can fully cooperate."

For someone as brilliant as Brandon, the director practically wished he could put him on a pedestal. "Of course, we’ll do everything we can. Don’t worry about that."

Brandon and Emily went in first.

When the director noticed Tristan and Megan, he greeted them respectfully before following the group inside.

In the changing room, Brandon put on a lab coat, scrubbed his hands thoroughly, and walked into Bernard’s room.

The elderly man blinked, startled. "Who are you?"Megan walked over to the bed. "Grandpa, this is Dr. Brandon. He’s here to check on you."

"Who are you?"

Megan froze mid-sentence. He’d forgotten her again.

The male nurse tried to comfort her. "Miss Shaw, don’t take it to heart. Yesterday, Mr. Reid played chess with your grandpa all afternoon. He kept repeating his own name, but your grandpa still couldn’t remember."

Bernard mumbled, "What was the name of that old guy eyeing my pieces yesterday?"

Tristan chuckled. "Was it Jeffery Reid?"

"Yeah, yeah! Jeffery Reid!"

Mr. Reid: [I’m Geoffrey, thank you very much!]

Megan nudged Tristan on the arm. "He’s like this and you’re still messing with him?"

Brandon did a routine physical and scheduled a PET scan.

The PET scan is a pretty advanced medical imaging technique, showing clear visuals of the brain’s condition.

Once the scans were ready, Brandon flipped through them, his brows knitting together. "It’s a malignant tumor in Mr. Shaw’s brain. Luckily, there’s no sign of it spreading. I’d say there’s about a 60% chance of successful surgery. But even then, he’ll need chemo, radiation, and targeted therapy to clear out any remaining cancer cells."

Just then, Emily brought over the blood test reports.

Brandon examined them one by one. Suddenly, his expression changed. He looked at Tristan and Megan. "Can I talk to you in private?"

At the end of the hallway, cigarette butts dotted the floor.

Brandon lowered his voice. "There’s something off in these blood tests. I developed a new blood analysis device during my studies abroad. It can detect hidden elements in the blood. Mr. Shaw’s got a toxin in his blood that affects memory."

Megan’s eyes widened as she looked up at Brandon, towering beside her. "You mean my grandpa’s Alzheimer’s might not be natural—it was caused?"

Brandon nodded slightly. "No doubt. The machine doesn’t lie."

Tristan’s gaze darkened. His fingers tapped on the window ledge. "Keep this between us. Brandon, can the equipment tell how long the toxin’s been in his blood?"

Brandon shook his head. "It can detect there’s a toxin, yeah, but not how long it’s been there. But based on the type, I’d say it’s been about two years."

Megan sighed quietly. "He started showing memory issues about two years ago, and it just got worse from there. He didn’t tell anyone while he was getting treated overseas. We only found out what was really going on when the police called, saying he couldn’t find his own home. That’s when my dad realized something serious was up and brought him back to home. Dr. Lewis, is there a way to make an antidote?" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Brandon pushed his glasses up. "Don’t worry. I’ll figure out exactly what’s in the toxin first. Making an antidote shouldn’t be too hard—it’ll just take time."

He paused to think. "Here’s the plan: we deal with the toxin in the blood first. Then move on to the brain surgery. That way the toxin doesn’t seep further into the brain during the operation."

Tristan and Megan both agreed with the strategy.

On the way back to the Dreamscape Manor, Tristan got a call from Cameron about a 1 p.m. meeting to finalize the construction schedule for the South Eden Resort.

Thinking it’d be boring to go back alone, Megan decided to go with Tristan to the Reid Group office.
