Chapter 71: 71:Future Warning

Before he could finish his sentence, something crashed through the window with a deafening impact, sending shards of glass flying.

The figure tumbled across the floor rolling around and kicking up dust before stopping.

"Enemy!"

"No! It’s a duck monster!" Chris yelped, gripping his sword.

Baret, Chris, and Gare all reacted instantly, drawing their weapons, ready for a fight.

Then, a weak voice groaned from the floor.

"NOOO!"

A girl’s figure slowly lifted her head, her hair a tangled mess, her face covered in dust.

"I’m not a duck monster... I’m human!"A muffled scream echoed from it.

Silence.

Kael started weirdly at an oddly humanoid chubby figure wrapped in a sheet who tried to stand up only to falter and stumbled across the table.

"?????"

Question marks appeared on Ramos and Kael’s face.

The room fell into deathly silence.

Ariana groaned, pushing herself up on shaky arms, her entire body aching from the rough landing. Her long hair was a mess, her dress torn at the edges, and dust covered her from head to toe as she tried to unwrap herself from the mess.

At the moment she really looked like a ghost who can scare the shit out of everyone.

She coughed, trying to gather herself, but the stunned stares of the men around her made her feel even more ridiculous.

Kael, sitting comfortably, still chewing his bread, tilted his head. "So, what exactly are you?" His voice was lazy, yet there was a hint of amusement.

"A human? Or a very determined duck monster?"

"WHAT?"

Ariana shot him a glare with an absurd look but seeing the serious expression, her face turning red from embarrassment. "I said I’m human, damn it!" She tried to stand, but her legs wobbled from the impact.

Chris scratched his head, whispering to Baret, "Still looks like a duck to me."

Ramos nodded. "Maybe a goose."

Kael smirked, clearly entertained. He leaned forward, resting his chin on his palm.

"Well, Miss not-a-duck, I assume you have a good reason for breaking into my room. Or did you just decide to take up flying?"

Ariana clenched her fists controlling her anger for getting called a duck.

’Bastard...Don’t you know not to body shame anyone.’

"I— I had no choice! I was locked up! And... and I have something important to say!"

Kael arched her brow. "Locked up? That explains the dramatics, but what could be so important that you’d risk breaking your neck?"

Ariana took a deep breath, her expression turning serious. "There’s going to be a monster undead tide tod...."

She paused, swallowing back her words with a slight realization. The undead attack should have begun now but till now there wasn’t any sign.

She made a quick calculation and spoke.

"The Astros town is in danger of being attacked by undead hordes.

The room went still again.

Kael’s smirk faded slightly. "Undead tide?"

"Are you joking with me?"Kael’s body erupted with coldness that gave Ariana goosebumps.

’What the hell?’

’He always had a laughing face but this sudden change of demeanor.Does he have a dual personality?’

Ariana nodded, hiding her unease. "Soon. The entire town will be in danger. If nothing is done, everyone will die."

Chris and Gare exchanged uneasy glances. Even Ramos’ anger seemed to momentarily take a backseat.

Kael, however, only chuckled. "And why should I believe you?" His tone was light, but there was a sharp edge to his gaze.

Ariana bit her lip. "Because I’ve seen it happen before..I mean, I have spotted undead hiding around."

Kael studied her, the amusement in his eyes slowly giving way to something colder. Then, suddenly, he stood up, stepping toward her.

Ariana flinched slightly but held her ground.

Kael stopped just in front of her, looking down with a grin that didn’t reach his eyes. "You’re an interesting little thing, aren’t you?"

Ariana swallowed hard.

Then, Kael turned to Ramos. "Old man, what do you think? Should we trust the flying duck?"

Ramos, who had barely recovered from his earlier humiliation, scoffed. "Trust her? She’s probably just trying to cause trouble."

Ariana’s fists tightened. "I know what I saw! If you don’t act now, it’ll be too late!"

Kael looked back at her, his grin widening into something almost... unhinged. "Then, little duck, let’s play a game."

Ariana tensed. "W-What?"

Kael leaned closer, whispering, "Let’s see if your warning is real... or if you’re just a little bird crying wolf."

Ariana’s heart pounded as she met Kael’s gaze. His grin was playful, but there was something terrifying underneath—something unpredictable, something wrong. She had heard the rumors, but seeing him up close like this, she realized they had barely scratched the surface.

"Alright then," Kael said, stretching his arms like he had just woken from a nap. "Let’s make this fun. If you’re right and a undead tide does happen, I’ll consider you useful." His voice dropped slightly. "But if you’re lying..." He trailed off, but his wicked smile finished the sentence.

Ariana swallowed hard. "I’m not lying."

Kael’s eyes flickered with something unreadable before he turned to Ramos.

"Old man, spread the word. Tell the knights about an undead beast tide. Alert them and ask them to conduct an investigation.Let’s see how much of a joke this turns out to be."

Ramos’ face twisted in anger. "You’re taking her seriously? Why are you listening to brat?"

Ramos wasn’t completely disregarding Ariana’s claims but he wanted to know why his nephew showed such a sudden interest.

Did he take a liking to her?

’Does he have a weird fetish and like a fat girl?’

Kael shrugged. "I like to see people squirm."

He shot Ariana a look. "And if she’s lying, she’ll be the first to pay the price."

Ariana clenched her fists.

’Damn lunatic... ’

But this was her only chance. "Fine. But don’t wait too long, or there won’t be anything left of this town to save."

Kael gave her a slow, mocking clap. "Brave words, little duck. Now let’s see if you can back them up."

He turned to his men. "Chris, Baret, Gare—get ready. If she’s telling the truth, we might have some fun soon."

Chris hesitated. "And if she’s wrong?"

Kael’s grin widened. "Then we make sure she never wastes our time again."

Ariana shivered. This was it. She had put everything on the line. Now, all she could do was pray that the nightmare from her past would come true in time to save her life.
