Instead, he charged forward through the fire, a beast uncaged.

Mira barely dodged, sliding across the ice as Kael's blade whooshed past her neck, close enough to cut a lock of her hair. She twisted midair and slammed her palm onto the ground. Boom! A fire circle ignited beneath Kael's feet, exploding upward.

"Arghhhh!!" Kael roared, lifted off the ground by the blast.

His body smashed into a tree, bark splintering. Blood trailed down his burned cheek. But as he dropped, he gripped the trunk and used the momentum to hurl himself at her again.

His blade came down, a violent arc meant to cleave her in two.

Mira caught it with a burning shield formed from her left arm, flames hardening into molten rock. Sparks flew. Her arm trembled. The blade cut halfway through before she screamed and forced Kael back with a fire burst from her foot.

He tumbled, landed hard, and spat blood.

"You burn well," she said, panting, "but not fast enough."

Kael stood, chest heaving. His shirt clung to his half-charred body, blood dripping from his temple, burns licking up his ribs. Still, he raised his sword.

"You talk too much."

He rushed again—this time faking low before twisting and swinging upward. The blade grazed Mira's shoulder. Blood sprayed. She bit her tongue to stifle a scream and retaliated with a flame spear from her hand. Kael blocked it with his forearm, the searing heat biting into his flesh, melting skin and muscle—but he didn't stop. He was on her.

He headbutted her—crack!—their skulls colliding. Mira stumbled. Kael stabbed.

The blade pierced her side, slicing into muscle. Mira gasped, coughed blood—but grabbed the blade with her bare hand, flames igniting in her grip.

"You're not the only one who can bleed!"

Fire surged through the sword, channeling up into Kael's hand. Flesh smoked. He cried out, jerking back, his palm blistered and cooked.

Mira kicked his stomach. Kael flew back, smashing through snow and crashing into a boulder.

Dragging his sword like a beast, burned and bloodied, he lunged again. Mira roared, arms glowing with another spell, the air shaking from heat and fury.

They met mid-charge.

Sword against spell. Fists against flame. Screams and snarls echoing in the burning white woods.

Blood soaked the snow. Limbs bruised. Bones cracked. Neither backed down.

They fought like dying beasts—too stubborn to fall, too furious to give up.

Mira's breath came in ragged gasps, her side bleeding and arm trembling, but her crimson eyes still burned with defiance. Smoke curled from her fingertips as she flicked her wrists—two slender daggers slid down from hidden sheaths, glinting with a darkened edge.

Kael's sword scraped against the scorched stone as he dragged it forward. His fingers flexed tightly around the hilt. Blood ran down his face and soaked the torn sleeve of his coat. Still, his stance was firm. His boots dug into the snow, breath steady now, eyes locked onto her every move.

Without a word, they lunged.

Kael's sword came down in a brutal diagonal slash. Mira ducked low, the blade barely missing her head. She twisted under his arm, dragging one dagger across his waist—a shallow slice, but enough to sting. Kael grunted and pivoted, swinging his elbow into her back.

Thud!

Mira hit the ground but rolled away before his boot came down to crush her ribs.

She flipped backward onto her feet, snow spraying up. With a shout, she threw one dagger—Kael deflected it with his blade, but it distracted him long enough for Mira to leap in. Her remaining dagger stabbed forward, aiming for his throat.

Kael snarled. He caught her wrist with one hand and shoved her back, then brought his sword up and down. Mira parried with the flat of a smal hiddenl dagger, but the force of the strike jolted her bones.

Sparks flew.

She spun to his left and kicked at his knee. Kael staggered slightly, opening a gap. She went in, dagger flashing.

Slice!

A cut bloomed on Kael's chest. Blood ran.

He growled and slammed his forehead into her nose.

Mira stumbled, dazed, blood trickling from her nostrils. Kael followed, relentless. He punched her ribs with one hand, then swung his sword again. Mira twisted, dodging the strike by inches and slashing at his forearm. The dagger tore flesh—deep this time. Kael bared his teeth.

Mira tried to press in, but Kael suddenly flipped his grip, spun with the sword in a reverse arc, and caught her across the thigh.

"Aghh!" she cried, falling to one knee, snow around her stained red.

Kael raised his sword to finish it, but Mira surged upward in a desperate move, headbutting his chin and shoving her dagger into his shoulder.

"Raaaagh!!" he screamed, staggering back.

Blood poured from his wound, staining his burnt shirt. Mira collapsed briefly, breath short, pain threatening to overwhelm her. But Kael was already coming again.

She barely dodged his slash, using her injured leg to leap aside, then twisted in midair and threw her last dagger at his face.

Kael lifted his hand just in time—the dagger embedded in his palm just then Mira grabbed him and before he could react, a fiery mass exploded from Mira.

"You're making me mad," he snarled.

"Good," Mira spat blood. "Maybe you'll finally die angry."

Snow whipped in the wind, ash and embers still rising from the scorched earth as Mira lunged forward, flames curling around her hands. Her cloak flared behind her like the wings of a phoenix as she screamed, "Incinerate!"

A torrent of fire roared toward Kael. He raised his sword just in time, planting his boots in the snow as the blaze slammed into him, however..

A hurricane of flames surrounded him and brunt him.

The sword glowed red-hot, metal sizzling under the pressure. His cloaks blackened and started to burn out.

The flames scorched his skin, peeling off patches of flesh. He growled in agony, eyes bloodshot, but he didn't fall.
