Chapter 280: One fine day

In another room on a different floor of the same building where the two people conversed about a topic that was limited to echo inside their room, Joanna was lying on her warm, comfortable bed.

Yet at the same time she could not feel how comfortable her bed was due to the cramp that got worse since she returned to her room after she sent her brother and her husband off to the festival.

Hugging the bottle that was filled with hot water that had been prepared by Bianca to help her soothe the pain, Joanna, who lay on the bed, slowly opened her eyes when knocks from the other side of the door softly resonated in her room.

"Who is there?" She asked in a weak voice, directing her heavy eyes on the door.

"Your one and only precious husband," was the reply that she received a split second later.

Giggling at what she heard from her shameless husband, Joanna deliberately pushed her weak body to sit on the bed. As she sat with the support of one hand while the other one was still holding the warm bottle under the blanket, which hem slid below her chest, she then said, "Come in."

Soon, the knob was turned and the door was pushed open.

"Still not feeling well?" An inquiry came from Canillas with a frown right after his gaze fell on Joanna’s complexion, though there was a genuine smile gracing her face.

Stepping across the room at a large pace after closing the door behind him, he then took a seat on the edge of the bed next to where Joanna sat, facing her.

"I will get better soon," Joanna answered with a reassuring smile.

"Should I call Fabio to come here and check?" Canillas offered, not feeling assured despite Joanna’s effort to appear well and fit.

With a smile, Joanna shook her head as a response. "There is no need to call a doctor. I am not sick, and this is a normal reaction of a woman who is on her period. Nothing to worry about," Joanna explained to the worried Canillas. "Besides, this is a time for everyone to rest."

"But Fabio is a doctor. It is his duty to get ready for any call regardless of time," Canillas argued. "I will go get him." A fleeting second later, he got up from the bed but could not go far because Joanna grabbed his wrist.

"I said I am fine, Sir Canillas. Let Sir Fabio rest. And you should rest too. You look tired," Joanna remarked, looking up at Canillas, who looked down at her.

"Aren’t you tired?" Joanna asked when Canillas still stood before her without uttering any word but seeming ready to flee to drag Fabio at any moment. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

From his looks, there was no doubt that he looked exhausted. And he should be exhausted after conducting activities that he was not familiar with, with people that he was not well acquainted with.

She only hoped that his fatigue was not caused by her brother’s antic conduct, though she was sure that Phillip would not do what he would definitely do to Marvin. His words before he left for the festival were also just a joke, as her husband was back home with his legs intact.

A few moments later, Joanna found Canillas let out a sigh. As if giving up his idea to force Fabio to come and check on her due to her hand that kept holding his, he was back to sitting on the bed with Joanna before his eyes.

Joanna then lowered her head as she looked down at her hand, which held Canillas’ wrist to stop him from disturbing the rest of Fabio, now to be clasped in both of Canillas’ hands. Lifting her head, Joanna’s eyes were lingering on Canillas’ gloomy face.

"I am very tired." Joanna heard Canillas speak, answering her question. There was a tinge of drowsiness in his voice. "And I am too tired to go back to that empty room." She saw him speak more with his gloomy eyes on hers. His hands still wrapped hers, giving a gentle massage.

Currently looking at the man before her, Joanna suddenly recalled the moment when the kids in the Powel Orphanage wore a sad look in order to gain what they wanted from Mrs. Powel.

"So what do you want to do?" Joanna asked despite being able to grasp what her husband’s intention actually was.

She had no doubt that Canillas would come to her room when he had returned home, and she also knew for what reason based on anything that they had passed through together so far. And what she had predicted was answered when Canillas now leaned forward and placed his forehead on her shoulder, causing the fresh fragrance of his slightly damp hair to drift into her nostrils.

"I want to sleep here... with you by my side." Joanna heard the straightforward words, and a warm smile bloomed on her face. Her mind drew back to the moment she found his bed still tidy last night once she entered his room, from which she deduced that he had not slept yet despite the night that had deepened.

"Or we can go to that empty room if you don’t want me to sleep here," Canillas continued to deliver his demand when he found no reaction came from Joanna.

A couple of seconds later he lifted his head, parting from Joanna’s shoulder, as he captured a low chuckle coming from her. When he met her smiling eyes, her soft voice flowed into his ears. "I am also tired, and I don’t want to move anywhere else. I want to sleep here, in my own room."

Canillas was in a daze. In this lifetime, it was the first time for Canillas to see Joanna’s cheerful and free expression—an expression that came from the heart with nothing in mind to restrain it. She looked free, like Joanna on that one fine day when his eyes fell on her bright smile for the first time.

As he recalled that one precious, unforgettable moment that was imprinted in his mind and heart, Canillas felt his hands empty. Joanna just pulled her hand away from his.
