Chapter 278: A deer and a tiger

When Joanna and Canillas almost arrived at Alenna Garden, as demanded, Joanna had set her feet back on the ground and walked with her hand in Canillas’, who clasped her hand immediately, refusing to let go.

As they reached the entrance of the garden, Joanna was welcomed by a perplexing view that caused her to wonder what was going on when she was not there.

A number of certain herbal plant seedlings, each of which was grown in a polybag, were being carried in the cart, seeming to be moved to the front yard of the house.

But it did not take a long time for Joanna to figure out whose work that was when she found her brother was there, directing some servants to do this and that to the plants. Then, what was left in her mind after figuring that out was another wonderment.

What would her brother do with those plants? Would he bring them to the festival? If so, was it to be sold? Joanna frowned at the thought. Why would he sell those plants? Was he short of money?

While Joanna was confused with what Phillip did with the plants, Phillip, who spotted the presence of Joanna, was confused at why she came back to the garden with the General of Archess, who had now become his brother-in-law.

Didn’t she leave a few moments ago to ask Bianca or Lucy to help him on behalf of her? But he did not see the sight of the two loyal handmaids of hers.

It was then Phillip lowered his head. In a fleeting second later, one could see his shoulders shake.

He could not believe that his sister would ask her prominent husband to go to the festival to help him with something that he was sure had never been done by a soldier before, particularly a distinguished one who held a fundamental role in their nation.

And the incredible thing was that this so-called famous, ruthless general was willing to do what Joanna asked for. He even walked hand in hand with her.

While laughing wholeheartedly, Phillip shook his head. He was still in disbelief about what Joanna did.

Who ever thought that a deer could tame a tiger? His fragile-looking sister was really not to be underestimated. She had proved herself to be a de Lara, and he felt that his supervision of her all this time was not useless.

Relief and pride swarmed inside Phillip. It seemed that he did not need to worry about Joanna too much anymore when it came to their time to be parted by further distance.

Joanna indeed had grown into a mature, reliable lady, and she knew how to make herself breathe and shine.

Phillip then lifted his head to show the residue of hilarity that was clear on his reddened face as he watched the deer and the tiger walk closer and closer toward him.

"What are you going to do with those plants, brother?" He heard his hilarious sister ask him when she was about three to four steps away from him.

Holding back his laughter, Phillip answered, "A gift for those who are kind enough to support your brother." He then shifted his gaze from his hilarious sister to the aloof man who was holding her hand. "What are you going to do with my brother-in-law here, sister?" Phillip returned Joanna’s inquiry with his, and it made Canillas realize why Joanna called her brother a cheeky person, as he heard him emphasize the word brother-in-law per syllable and saw him grin at him.

Canillas hoped that his brother-in-law was not a handful.

"Sir Canillas is here to help you, brother." After saying that, Joanna withdrew her hand from Canillas’ to then walk closer toward Phillip and signal him to lower his head. As Phillip obeyed, she brought her lips near his ear and whispered,

"You have to treat my husband well. Don’t tease him. Don’t make him the object of your entertainment. He is not Marvin. Do you get it, brother?" With the warning delivered, Joanna studied Phillip’s response once she looked at his face.

As always, her sole brother regarded her threat as something hilarious, as she found him grinning ear to ear. He then lowered his head again to whisper something in her ear. "I will break your husband’s legs."

Joanna knitted her brows as she glared at Phillip, who was still grinning at her. "Then, I will make you regret being born as Phillip de Lara," Joanna replied in a whisper near his ear.

"Oh, I am scared," came a response from Phillip that was said in a flat, expressionless tone, which caused Joanna’s brows to knit more, as Phillip’s expression did not describe what his lips said. "I will tell Mother about this. I will tell Mother that the heart of her firstborn has been deeply hurt. So you, secondborn, be ready to explain it to Mother when she comes in your dream." Phillip raised his brows. One corner of his lips tugged up.

Pouting her lips, Joanna sent another glare to Phillip. She could not retort back when he mentioned their mother. Noticing that, Phillip broadly smiled and said, "Don’t forget to prepare a wheelchair for your husband. I will send him home safe and sound."

Receiving Joanna’s glare, he added, "Now be good and keep your words. Go back to your room and rest." Phillip lightly tapped Joanna’s cheek before walking past her.

What an awesome brother she had. Joanna said inwardly, realizing that she was surrounded by two men who liked to poke her button for their amusement. Joanna let out a sigh of resignation.

Nonetheless, instead of proceeding with his brother’s words, Joanna asked, "Where is Valerie, brother?" She noticed that she had not seen Valerie since she was back in the garden just now.

Did Valerie have something else to do and change her mind about helping her brother? Joanna hoped that was what would happen.

"She is in the front, helping to organize the plants in the carriage," Phillip answered while continuing to direct what the servants should do to the plants that he would bring to the festival. He was not aware that his answer had made his sister’s just-awoken spirit go back to sleep.

Turning to look at Canillas, who stood with his hands inside the pockets of his pants and eyes scanning the busy activities in the garden, Joanna highly hoped that he could be relied upon, and by having him with her brother and Valerie, she could be at ease.
