Chapter 399: Chapter 399: I’m Even More Awesome Than You Think

Just as Scarlett Jennings said, children born with the Child Life have Spirit Roots and innate Wisdom, making them more precocious than ordinary children.

When Kingston Jennings was three years old, he already knew he was born with the Child Life. freёwebnoѵel.com

It was his aunt who told him.

She explained to him what Child Life was, secretly created a surrogate child for him, and showed him how to use the surrogate child to ward off illnesses and misfortunes.

For a while, he really lived like a healthy, ordinary child.

But sometimes, in order to keep his aunt’s attention, he would pretend to be sick.

His aunt, though she knew, never scolded him. Instead, she would play along, even teaching him some strange and curious things in private.

Kingston didn’t know why his aunt knew these things, but she just did, and it seemed the rest of the family was unaware.

His aunt also told him not to mention it to the family.

Kingston didn’t understand why he couldn’t talk about it, but he listened to her.

His aunt explained that the surrogate child couldn’t block the calamity destined for him.

But when the day of calamity arrived, she would help him resolve it.

If the calamity could be dispelled successfully, he would finally be able to live like a normal person.

But no one expected the accident to arrive so abruptly.

His aunt’s child was taken away by a mysterious figure, and she never returned.

She didn’t fulfill her promise to him.

Kingston didn’t resent her—at the very least, she left him the surrogate child.

Though he failed to successfully dispel his calamity, he survived.

Just as his aunt had wished.

He has continued to live well.

As for Scarlett Jennings, Kingston’s feelings toward her are conflicted.

On one hand, since she is his aunt’s daughter, he wants to get along with her.

But on the other hand, he can’t resist hating her.

If it weren’t for her, his aunt wouldn’t have been harmed.

He knows it’s not her fault, and his aunt wouldn’t want him to blame her.

So he has never shown any rejection toward her.

Yet, deep down, he doesn’t want to share anything with her about his aunt.

That was a secret shared solely between him and his aunt.

...

Kingston stared at Scarlett, and Scarlett stared back at him.

Neither spoke.

Kingston chose not to speak.

Scarlett didn’t know what to say.

After a long silence, Scarlett finally broke it, earnestly asking,

"So what’s the point of you telling me this?"

Hearing her ask in such a serious tone, her almond-shaped eyes clear and unclouded, showing no trace of pity or sympathy for him, Kingston suddenly smiled.

It wasn’t the mocking smile from earlier, but a genuine smile that tugged at the corners of his lips.

[I want you to know that I know far more than you do.]

[And that I’m far more capable than you think.]

Scarlett’s gaze shifted slightly, and as she looked at Kingston again, it was no longer with the dismissive indifference she might show toward an irrelevant cousin.

After a while, she asked him,

"So, does this mean you don’t need my help and can resolve your Child Life yourself?"

Kingston: ...

Seeing his silence, Scarlett immediately felt reassured.

"Seems like I’m still better at this."

Kingston: ...

This cousin of his is seriously annoying.

Scarlett didn’t continue asking Kingston about the mystery figure.

She believed him when he said he was more capable than she imagined.

As for how capable he was, she figured she’d find out sooner or later.

Much like the one who created his surrogate child, she knew she’d eventually learn more.

...

After leaving Kingston’s room, Scarlett planned to return to her own room to pack a few more things. However, as she reached the staircase, she suddenly sensed the demon energy spreading from downstairs.

She paused in her tracks, her eyes narrowing slightly.

It was Nathan White’s energy.

She didn’t think Nathan would release demon energy casually, so the only explanation was that something had happened.

Without hesitation, Scarlett rushed downstairs. In less than half a minute, she reached the side hall, clutching a Spirit Talisman in one hand, and, with a swift motion, pulled open the side hall door.

"Senior Brother! You..."

Whatever she was about to say got abruptly stuck in her throat as she took in the scene inside the hall.

In the corner of the couch, Nathan White’s plump body was huddled tightly.

To his left, a small beautiful creature stood on the couch, curiously sniffing him with its tiny nose.

To his right, Dashiell stood beside him, tilting his head while staring at him. Occasionally, Dashiell would poke at Nathan’s trembling hair and ask sincerely,

"Why isn’t your hair standing upright?"

Scarlett: ...

Nathan White, trapped between a Flood Dragon and a fox, was trembling all over. When he spotted Scarlett, he immediately looked as though he’d seen a savior.

"Scar-Scarlett! Save me..."

He was about to be eaten alive by the Flood Dragon!

Ashton Todd stood nearby but, after seeing the divination, knew he couldn’t defeat the younger creature.

He was forced to abandon the idea of rescuing his senior brother altogether.

Scarlett noticed Dashiell and the small creature still crowding around Nathan. Feeling helpless, she stepped forward, grabbed each of them by the scruff, and pulled them away from Nathan.

Sure enough, as soon as the two moved away, the chaotic energy around Nathan eased significantly.

Though his gaze toward Dashiell and the small creature still carried an unmistakable look of vigilance.

Once pulled away, the little creature latched onto Scarlett’s arm and scrambled into her embrace, demanding to be held.

Dashiell, having his collar yanked open, frowned in dissatisfaction and pointed at Nathan accusingly, still trying to speak,

"Scarlett! You can’t just pull me away! Do you even know there’s a..."

"I know." Scarlett interrupted him before he could shout it out loud, not wanting Dashiell to alert the Jennings family.

Nathan White glanced at Scarlett, seemingly unsurprised that she knew his identity. He simply looked somewhat bashful and shrunk even further into himself.

Dashiell and the little fox had originally been playing at the Chalmers family estate when they sensed the unusual energy at the Jennings household and rushed over.

He hadn’t forgotten the instructions Samuel Chalmers gave him earlier.

He had to protect Scarlett.

And yet, as soon as he arrived, he spotted a pudgy, transformed hedgehog sitting leisurely in the side hall of the Jennings household, snacking cheerfully.

Judging by its size, it was hard to say how many snacks it had devoured.

Dashiell had marched in with the little fox at his side.

Though he was just a young Flood Dragon, the natural advantage of species dominance stood in his favor.

While hedgehogs weren’t on the Flood Dragon menu, encountering one meant it would make for a decent spiked toy.

But before he could even start playing, Scarlett appeared.

"Oh, right, you were just calling him Senior Brother!"

Dashiell had noticed Nathan’s modified Taoist Robe earlier but hadn’t connected it to the Taoism Academy.

He had simply assumed it was some unique fashion choice for this round hedgehog.

After realizing the truth, he glanced at Nathan’s timid demeanor again, and couldn’t help but question Scarlett with a soul-deep doubt,

"Someone like him... can really study at your academy?"

If hedgehogs were allowed in,

Did this mean he and the little fox could enroll too???
