The Enhanced Doctor-Chapter 775: Director Xie has also arrived
(Thanks to readers 20171230170834523, Love Dream, and Darkmoon Dust for their encouragement with monthly tickets.)
Director Xia was quite impressed with Liu Banxia because of his ability to motivate the students. The deeds Liu Banxia had accomplished were also indeed praiseworthy.
Initially, he had been somewhat put off by Liu Banxia. So "young," and just because he was Zhou Shuwen’s disciple, did that mean he could break so many rules?
But after getting to know him better, that impression faded. Liu Banxia didn’t just possess skills; he also had ideas.
Every year, the hospital faced a talent gap—a feast or famine situation. Many students graduated from medical school annually, but their impact on society wasn’t very significant. The hospital needed a good reputation, and so did the school. The school’s performance in this area had declined over the past two years, and it was no longer spoken of as frequently as before.
This was also an opportunity. Maybe not this year, but what about in two or three years? Could there be new developments?
The two were chatting congenially. Since the car from the Second Hospital hadn’t arrived yet, they couldn’t leave with the students anyway.
Just as they were chatting, Xie Chunli’s voice came through.
"Oh, you two are having quite a nice chat."
"Oh, Director Xie, you came to pick us up in person?" Liu Banxia hurriedly stood up.
"I also came to see you. You’ve certainly made quite a stir, kid," Xie Chunli said.
"Not at all. It’s mainly our director’s idea. He wants all the interns who come to us to leave with a practical skill," Liu Banxia replied.
Xie Chunli waved his hand. "I wasn’t talking about that. I meant the series of surgeries you performed back-to-back recently. Not bad, kid. You’re really something."
"Are you really praising me? I don’t know how to respond," Liu Banxia said with a wry smile.
Xie Chunli chuckled. "I am genuinely praising you. I didn’t notice at first; I only found out when I heard doctors from our Municipal Hospital talking about it. That’s truly impressive. Most people wouldn’t have been able to endure that."
"That’s a relief then, knowing you’re genuinely praising me. To be honest, I somewhat regret it; it was truly exhausting. But to give my six interns a graduation gift, I had no choice but to push myself," Liu Banxia responded.
"Wasn’t it to compete with Xu Qixin?" Xie Chunli asked with a smile.
"Director Xie, what do you think? Would I do something so pointless?" Liu Banxia said helplessly.
He hadn’t expected it to spread to the Municipal Hospital. It was originally an insignificant matter, but now it had become quite a big deal.
"If it were anyone else, I might actually believe them. But with you, I have to consider it carefully," Xie Chunli said. "Actually, this also reflects an issue: in our system, the promotion channels are too narrow. That’s why it sparks so much discussion, and it’s a difficult problem to solve."
"Your Second Hospital’s emergency center is doing relatively well, but what about the inpatient department? Promotions aren’t that easy there, are they? There are probably many who qualified as attending physicians long ago but haven’t received the corresponding contracts."
Liu Banxia nodded. "It’s not just at the attending physician level; it’s the same for associate chief physicians. If it weren’t for this whole situation, would a newly appointed deputy director in our emergency center, like myself, attract so much attention?"
"So, what are your thoughts on it?" Xie Chunli asked.
"Whether it’s achievable or not, the work still needs to be done. Our director has definitely assigned me to assist with the teaching and training program, so I don’t have a chance to slack off anyway," Liu Banxia said.
"You’re a slippery one. But I won’t make things difficult for you," Xie Chunli said. "As I said before, if it were someone else, this would just be a joke. But with you, it needs careful consideration. You’ve given many people a challenging problem."
"Haha, it seems Director Xie thinks highly of Banxia as well," Director Xia laughed.
"We’ve partnered a couple of times, and he left a deep impression on me. He has such deft hands and remarkable skills. He was a bit green back then, but he has truly matured now. He’s a real powerhouse; Chief Director Zhou has found himself an excellent disciple."
"Look, you’re praising me again. It seems we won’t be leaving before lunch. We might as well let the fog dissipate a bit. How about I treat you both to a meal in the cafeteria?" Liu Banxia suggested.
"Sure. Has your car not arrived yet?" Xie Chunli inquired.
"It should be here soon. I got stuck in terrible traffic on my way over. I just don’t know how many emergency calls there will be today; ambulances will have a tough time getting through this," Liu Banxia replied.
"Our hospital has two ambulances stuck in traffic. One of them ran out of blood bags, so someone had to rush over with more in an insulated box on an electric bike," Xie Chunli revealed.
"Ah... those in emergency services dread such extreme weather," Liu Banxia sighed.
The Second Hospital’s emergency center would likely face a similar situation. However, the current issue wasn’t a shortage of doctors but the difficulty for ambulances to navigate the roads.
Just then, Xu Yino came bounding in from outside.
"Teacher Liu, I’m here!"
"Well, well, treating this place like your old stomping grounds, are we?" Liu Banxia joked.
"Hello Director Xia, hello Director Xie," Xu Yino hurriedly greeted.
"Banxia is treating us to lunch in the cafeteria today. How about we leave the ordering to you? Otherwise, Director Xie and I might feel a bit awkward choosing," Director Xia said.
She’s one of our own, learning under Banxia, and a very bright one at that. We must look out for her.
"Hehe, no problem! Cafeteria Three, right? Their sweet and sour pork and double-cooked pork are the best!" Xu Yino replied with a grin.
"See? It’s the same at our hospital. Whenever I offer to treat someone, our cafeteria manager is all smiles. I’m practically a super VIP there now," Liu Banxia said.
"Well, it’s not like you hold back on ordering our chicken drumsticks and pig trotters! Besides, with all that money you earn and nowhere to spend it, what else is there to do but eat and drink?" Xu Yino retorted. "The driver has sorted everything out; we can head straight to the cafeteria. There’s nothing major at the hospital; though there’s some traffic, it’s being diverted. Also, the patient admitted to the ER the other night for carotid artery bleeding? His facial nerves have recovered somewhat. Teacher Zhang said there might be some slight lingering effects, but they’re unnoticeable unless you’re specifically looking for them."
"That’s pretty good, then. Even though he brought it on himself by recklessly swerving around on that electric scooter, he’s still young. If he ended up with facial paralysis, his future would be very difficult," Liu Banxia nodded.
Director Xia glanced at Xu Yino with some surprise. This girl is really becoming capable! Although she had been a student council officer in school, she later gave it up to focus on her studies. Just now, she had articulated everything clearly, handled the necessary arrangements for Liu Banxia, and also reported on the situation at the hospital. That was no easy feat. She must frequently coordinate with Liu Banxia in handling matters at the Emergency Center to know what he’s concerned about.
He knew very well that although Xu Yino appeared quite obedient, she could actually be somewhat ’rebellious.’ This was typical of the younger generation; they all had their own ideas. What did this prove? It proved that Liu Banxia wasn’t just skilled at teaching; he was also adept at managing people. This shouldn’t be underestimated; it’s a fundamental requirement for a leader. Whether a senior or junior leader, if you can’t even effectively direct your subordinates, how can you expect your work to proceed smoothly? It seemed Zhou Shuwen had promoted this disciple of his to deputy director not just because his medical skills were up to par or so he could help manage the teaching and training program. He also possessed some talent for department management.
Walking along the campus path, the fog was still thick. While not so dense that you couldn’t recognize someone approaching, one still needed to look carefully.
This then made Director Xia feel a bit dejected. Many students were ’coincidentally’ on the path. Of course, they weren’t here to ’run into’ me; it was definitely Liu Banxia.
"You’re the one who spread the news, aren’t you, girl?" Director Xia asked Xu Yino.
Xu Yino grinned and nodded. "We have to prepare for next year, right? The few of us have already discussed it: we want the next batch to ’thoroughly enjoy’ all the suffering and hardship we endured this past year."
"Speaking of which, has the hospital’s employment announcement been released yet?" Liu Banxia asked.
Xu Yino cheerfully nodded. "I’ve signed the contract already, hahaha... I’m an official doctor now."
"You’re all smiles now, but there’ll be plenty of times you’ll cry soon enough," Liu Banxia said.
"What else can we do? The days ahead are bound to be bleak anyway, so we might as well find what joy we can now," Xu Yino retorted, full of justification.
"Director Xie, are you also planning to make some reforms to your teaching and training program this year?" Liu Banxia ignored her and asked Xie Chunli.
Xie Chunli nodded. "Indeed, we also need to make some reforms, though perhaps not as extensive as yours. And it’s not just us; because of what you’ve done, all the teaching and training bases in the city will have to make some changes."
"See? That’s the kind of influence I was talking about," Director Xia said.
"Sigh... Because of what I’ve stirred up, I feel like I’ve become a villain. If you ask me..." Liu Banxia started to say.
Liu Banxia hadn’t even finished speaking when another small group of students, also "coincidentally" passing by, ran over.
"Teacher Liu, can we take a picture together?"
"Taking photos in all this fog? It’ll be like an X-ray! Hurry up, I’m starving," Liu Banxia called out, then chuckled as he posed for photos with the students.
"Alright, you’re the star now. Director Xie and I are happy to be the supporting cast," Director Xia joked.
"I’m puzzled. Don’t they know they’ll face so much hardship if they really go to the emergency center?" Liu Banxia said.
"Haha, they all know. But they also want to learn real skills, so this whole group is really looking forward to it," Xu Yino said.
"Having expectations is a good thing. With expectations comes motivation," Xie Chunli said.
Liu Banxia nodded. "Yes, indeed. The worst is encountering people who just want to coast. Anyway, I’ll leave it to Xu Yino and the others. We’ll see if they’re horses or mules by working them hard."
Director Xia shook his head with a helpless smile. What Liu Banxia said was brutally honest. Indeed, isn’t the first hurdle in becoming a doctor always starting with enduring hardship and exhaustion?
