The Enhanced Doctor-Chapter 709 got ’outsmarted’ again
(Thanks to fellow readers 170108212004688 and Zhang Liuxin for their encouraging monthly tickets.)
Liu Banxia didn't stay long in the proctology department, just long enough to make some introductions and have a cup of tea. That was all it took.
What happened next would depend on Jiang Tao's performance. Whether he'd appear on the show also depended on luck. Ultimately, the show's production team called the shots; everything else was just nonsense.
After returning to the emergency center, Liu Banxia worked overtime to wrap up all his pending tasks. Then, he started watching the clock for quitting time, which was less than twenty minutes away.
Finally, the end of the workday arrived. After saying goodbye to his colleagues, he happily left with Qing Kewa.
He was practically bouncing in his seat, eager to leave and hardly caring about anything else.
"Dr. Liu, are we going straight for barbecued skewers and beer?" Qing Kewa asked curiously as they settled into the car.
"First, we're going to the school. Qiaoqiao has some pork ribs for us. Let's gnaw on some ribs first. After my little speech, we can joyfully feast on barbecued meat," Liu Banxia replied.
Qing Kewa was overjoyed. She was really looking forward to the barbecued skewers; not only were there many varieties, but they were also incredibly delicious.
Upon arriving at the school, Liu Banxia didn't rush in. Instead, he called Qiu Mingyuan, asking him to bring Qiaoqiao out. After all, it wasn't appropriate to have a big feast on school grounds; they'd have to eat discreetly in the car.
"Brother Liu, you got here pretty quickly!" Qiu Mingyuan greeted with a laugh as he strolled over.
"Isn't it all for you? This is going to take up at least two hours of my time. Do you still have evening self-study or anything after this?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Don't worry, I've already told them. Xiao Yue and Wang Mingxing will come with us too. The ribs might be a little cool, but they're fine to eat," Qiaoqiao said.
"Hehe, Ming Yuan, want a piece? This is my wife's cooking, you know," Liu Banxia boasted. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
"Tsk, tsk, I already ate plenty at home. Did you forget I was the one who picked up Sister Qiaoqiao?" Qiu Mingyuan retorted with a smile.
Liu Banxia grumbled, "Qiaoqiao, why did you give him so much? You could have saved it for me as an evening snack."
"Oh, don't be such a cheapskate. There's still more at home. Qing Kewa, hurry and eat," Qiaoqiao urged.
The food in the insulated lunch box wasn't actually that cold; they were just saying that.
Although the ribs tasted very good, Liu Banxia was the main one devouring them. Qing Kewa, however, was saving precious stomach space for the grand barbecue feast planned for later.
"Brother Liu, have some water. The flavor of the ribs is quite rich," Qiu Mingyuan said.
"Ah, the food I crave most is Qiaoqiao's cooking. It's not that her cooking is extraordinarily delicious, but I just crave it; I just love to eat it," Liu Banxia said.
"Brother Liu, can you please not? This is a school campus," Qiu Mingyuan said, exasperated yet amused.
"What's wrong with it being a campus? You're allowed to date Xiao Yue here, but I can't praise my wife?" Liu Banxia retorted confidently.
Qiu Mingyuan was defenseless against this. Besides, he'd known Liu Banxia for a long time and knew that when Liu Banxia decided to be playful, he could be quite shameless.
"Alright, we've eaten and drunk our fill, and it's about time. Let's go," Liu Banxia announced.
The small group started walking towards the auditorium. They didn't attract much attention on the way. The third-year high school students were already in the auditorium getting ready, while the first and second-year students didn't pay him much mind.
When they reached the auditorium, Liu Banxia glanced from the back to the front and was stunned.
"You're not playing fair, kid! What's all this?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Haha, our esteemed principal said it would be good to have the parents participate. This way, everyone can make targeted efforts in the limited time remaining," Qiu Mingyuan replied with a wide smile.
Liu Banxia shook his head; he'd been tricked. No wonder he hadn't seen the principal; it seemed the principal was also aware of his own slightly underhanded move.
He had only thought he'd casually say a few sentences to the students, and then they could all happily go for skewers.
But now? These students all had their parents with them. The auditorium was packed, and many students even had both parents in attendance.
"This is really putting me on the spot! Qiaoqiao, how could you go along with their nonsense?" Liu Banxia said pitifully.
"Oh, please, what are you afraid of? It's like herding sheep; whether it's one or two, or a few more or less, what difference does it make?" Qiaoqiao said.
"The key is, many parents whose children study at this school are very accomplished. For me to get up there and spout nonsense, isn't that like showing off one's meager skills before an expert?" Liu Banxia said.
"What's there to be chicken about? Hurry up and go on stage. The sooner it's over, the sooner we can go for skewers," Qiaoqiao said.
She genuinely didn't think it was a big deal; in fact, she was quite happy. This was an opportunity for Liu Banxia to shine, and if he shone, she was happy.
As for his mischievous wife, Liu Banxia didn't know what to say. Well, it was a case of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't,' so he might as well get on stage.
As Liu Banxia walked onto the stage, the murmuring in the hall lessened somewhat, and then the students began to applaud.
Liu Banxia waved to the audience below, then stood before the microphone, "To be honest, I'm quite scared right now. I have no idea what I'm going to say tonight. If I mess up, please don't throw eggs at me.
"Originally, my idea was just to come here and give everyone a shot in the arm, to boost your confidence a bit. But I didn't expect everyone to take this so seriously; it's made me nervous too.
"Many of the parents here are undoubtedly more accomplished than I am. In any case, I don't care anymore. I'll just make a humble attempt. If what I say is right, please consider it. If it's wrong, just have a laugh and forget about it."
Despite his seemingly unconventional tone, the students below loved it. As soon as he finished speaking, they applauded again.
"To use Teacher Guo's words, 'Those who disrupt your field aren't necessarily your direct competitors; often, they come from completely different industries.' I suppose I'm crossing into a new field now too—a humble doctor trying his hand at dishing out chicken soup for the soul."
Once the applause subsided, Liu Banxia continued, "The countdown to the college entrance exam leaves fewer and fewer days; not many are left. In these few days, some students are seizing every minute and second to study, while some are seizing every minute and second to relax. And now, all of you have gathered here to listen to me talk nonsense.
"This is quite an interesting state of affairs. If you ask for my assessment, I'd say it's all perfectly fine. Because if we're talking about sheer hard work in studying, I might not be able to compare to many of you present here.
"Everyone has their own methods of studying and their own ways to cope with pressure. So, rather than saying I'm here today to give you a pep talk or serve up some motivational soup, it's more like I'm here to chat with everyone.
"I said a lot when I came last time. However, last time, my main goal was to beat the retreat drum, hoping you wouldn't all rush headlong into medical school.
"Actually, just the other day at the hospital, we were discussing this very issue—the old saying about men fearing they'll enter the wrong profession. If you truly choose poorly after graduation, it will have a significant impact on your future life.
"For some highly specialized jobs, it naturally has to be someone from that specific field. You wouldn't ask an accountant to fix your teeth, right? That just wouldn't make sense.
"However, we also can't ignore an issue: today's employment avenues are both narrow and wide. Narrow in that there are certain entry thresholds. Wide in that many industries also have capable experts who have crossed over from other fields.
"The national civil service exam has been quite popular these past few years. When we graduate from our undergraduate programs and apply for master's degrees, we still have opportunities to choose. So, this brings up a new question: the college entrance exam is very important, but is it so important that we should bet our entire lives on it?
"All of you students here are outstanding individuals. Our school's admission rates for 985 and 211 universities are also very good each year. The number of people who pass the score thresholds for Tier 1 and Tier 2 universities is also very high.
"For everyone here, getting into a university, by current standards, really isn't that difficult. If you don't believe me, go to Tsinghua or Peking University and ask the students there. Ask them if it was hard.
"They will definitely tell you it wasn't hard, because they all got in. If it were hard, they wouldn't have gotten in. Some might say I'm rambling, a tap of the hammer here, a chop of the axe there—what exactly am I trying to get at?
"Actually, what I want to say is that we should scorn the enemy strategically but take them seriously tactically. To put a bit of a damper on things, not many among you will be able to get into your ideal school *and* your ideal major.
"So, what about those who don't succeed? Are they supposed to carry such a heavy burden for the rest of their lives? Frankly, if I were to look at it, if you really think that way, you're just being a big dummy.
"I'm a very practical person. Back when I took the college entrance exam, my thinking was simply to be able to live a good life in the future. Going to university isn't the only shortcut, but it is a relatively faster one.
"Perhaps many of the students here won't achieve perfection in this college entrance exam. But I believe that for our lives, this is merely a beginning.
"Next, we will still have many opportunities to adjust the course of our future lives. If we do our best and live without regrets, then our lives are a success.
"Don't always dwell on regrets. We should value the present. Let regrets pass through your mind once, learn the lesson, and then continue the fight.
"Don't listen to others trying to fool you by saying you'll be liberated once you get to university; that's all nonsense. If you truly 'liberate' yourself then, your future will probably be more than half 'liberated' too—in a bad way.
"Every stage of study is about learning, and it's the same after you start working. Life, well, it's never truly easy.
"Right now, it's you all sitting here, accompanied by your parents. Some years from now, it will still be you sitting here, only you'll be accompanying your children.
"There are a hundred ways of life for a hundred kinds of people; we shouldn't fuss over the loss or gain of every single 'city' or 'piece of land.' We still need to look forward. If you're always looking backward, you'll easily end up backtracking. My dinner was a bit salty. I'll take a sip of water first, and then we'll continue chatting."
Listening to his words, the students now chuckled again.
Dr. Liu was genuinely amusing. He wouldn't rigidly tell you what you should or shouldn't do; instead, he encouraged you to think for yourself. And he spoke so humorously; it was truly quite good.
