The Enhanced Doctor-Chapter 687: The rumor about Teacher Liu has been confirmed.
"Liu Yiqing, how did your group find today’s tour?" Liu Banxia found the tour group led by Liu Yiqing.
If it hadn’t been for that child with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, he would have been actively attending to this small group. He had now composed himself. Perhaps there were some promising talents here he could recruit.
"Teacher Liu, have you finished your work? These are all clinical undergraduates, your juniors. I won’t introduce them to you one by one," Liu Yiqing said with a smile.
Liu Banxia nodded. "I’ve finished. I’m not in the best of moods today. We’ve just confirmed a case of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Does any of you know what kind of disease this is? There’s a reward for the right answer."
The group of students looked somewhat bewildered, but Liu Banxia noticed a young man with glasses on the right who appeared deep in thought.
Liu Banxia wasn’t in a hurry; he had to give them some time to think.
"Teacher Liu, is the pathogen of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis related to the measles virus? I don’t remember it clearly."
After waiting a moment, the young man Liu Banxia had noticed earlier raised his hand.
Liu Banxia smiled and nodded. "When answering questions, be more confident. You’re right. It’s a panencephalitis where a defective measles virus attacks, primarily damaging the brain’s white and gray matter."
"Because of this, there are currently no effective drugs for this disease in clinical practice. Only symptomatic treatment can be given to alleviate complications."
"But even so, the patient will still have sequelae. Since you’re in the field, you can imagine the related sequelae. What’s your name?"
"Teacher Liu, my last name is also Liu. My name is Liu Liang, but I want to learn about cardiothoracic surgery," Liu Liang said, somewhat embarrassed.
"No problem," Liu Banxia said with a smile. "Our Second Hospital has every surgical department, be it cardiothoracic, general, plastic, urology, proctology, or anything else. Even if you’re interested in ENT, I can find you a renowned teacher to guide you."
"How about this: there’s still some time before dinner. I’ll take you to observe a surgery. Although you’ve had internships before, this coming year’s internship will definitely be different."
"Let’s take a vote by show of hands. General surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery—raise your hands in that order. Liu Yiqing, please count. We’ll go observe a surgery in whichever department gets the most votes."
"Also, considering Liu Liang performed very well today, he’s rewarded with a pig’s trotter. I hope you’ll keep up the good work. And Liu Yiqing can pay for it."
"Teacher Liu, what are you doing? Why are you bullying people again?" Liu Yiqing asked sulkily.
"Because Liu Liang answered correctly, and you didn’t," Liu Banxia shrugged.
Liu Yiqing was quite frustrated. Where would she find the time to memorize so many rare conditions? During patient consultations, common cases are, well, the most common, after all.
The students, on the verge of their internships, were envious of the interaction between Liu Yiqing and Liu Banxia. They were even more envious of Liu Liang.
Even though Liu Banxia had said it casually, it was tantamount to a promise. As long as Liu Liang was willing to come to the Second Hospital, Liu Banxia would find him a good supervising doctor.
For someone of Liu Banxia’s standing, even an offhand remark was a commitment he would honor. To them, Liu Banxia was currently an insurmountable mountain.
The final vote count didn’t surprise Liu Banxia; most students had opted for general surgery.
"Alright then, Liu Liang, your reward will just be one pig’s trotter. Liu Yiqing, check which general surgery operations are currently in progress," Liu Banxia said.
"It should be Teacher Wei’s cervical lymphangioma resection and Teacher Qi’s thyroid cyst resection," Liu Yiqing replied.
"Okay, then let’s go find Qi Wentai. After all, thyroid cyst surgeries are performed more frequently. Then we’ll see if Old Chen from cardiothoracic surgery has any operations scheduled. If so, we’ll make a detour," Liu Banxia said.
Hearing his words, the students immediately perked up. For them, this was an unexpected delight; they hadn’t imagined they’d get to observe a live surgery.
Walking to the operating room, they once again sensed Liu Banxia’s standing within the Emergency Center.
Everyone they passed greeted Liu Banxia. And these weren’t perfunctory nods but genuine greetings.
Although they were still students, they had interned in hospitals before. They could distinguish between polite courtesies and sincere salutations.
What they gathered was that although Liu Banxia was ’only’ the chief resident, his position in the Emergency Center was incredibly important.
Now, the rumors they’d heard were confirmed—they weren’t just tales but reality. Otherwise, Liu Banxia wouldn’t have been able to casually arrange an observation after learning the surgical schedule.
To doctors, the operating room was a sacred place. Observing a surgery already in progress like this was only possible if one either had very strong connections or held a very high position.
Regardless of which it was, it testified to Liu Banxia’s status in the Emergency Center.
Hearing rumors is one thing, but seeing is believing. Being taken so seriously by Liu Banxia during this visit had already left them feeling quite elated.
Liu Banxia led them through a meticulous hand-washing and disinfection process before they entered the operating room.
"Well, Old Wei, what’s got you working so hard today? I was planning to bring the kids to see your skills."
Upon arriving in the operating room, Liu Banxia remarked after glancing at the ongoing procedure.
"I have no choice but to work hard; I want to rest sooner too. With the Haemophilus influenzae type B issue, I have to try and make up for lost time. I’ve got an appendectomy later; otherwise, you want to take over for me?" Wei Yuan said.
"That won’t do. I have a very important task today: to look after these guests properly," Liu Banxia said earnestly.
"They can’t all be from your general surgery department, can they? That’s blatant favoritism," the anesthesiologist, Li Liwei, commented helplessly.
"This isn’t favoritism on my part. Kong Fancheng, you’re from the anesthesiology department, right? Put on your gloves; I’ll give you a chance to observe Doctor Li up close," Liu Banxia said.
"There’s really someone from anesthesiology? Who is Kong Fancheng?" Li Liwei asked eagerly.
A male student on the far right raised his hand. Now the students understood why they’d been made to scrub in so meticulously.
Then, a hopeful thought sparked in some of them: Would they also get a chance to scrub in?
"Little Kong, you’re here for an internship at our Emergency Center, right? Don’t worry, as long as you’re willing to learn, our anesthesiology department will make sure to teach you everything we know, and then some," Li Liwei said.
"What are you doing? Don’t scare the kid. We’ll wait for you for dinner. Add an extra dish for us tonight," Liu Banxia said.
"Add one? I’ll add two!" Li Liwei declared.
"That’s more like it. Everyone, take a closer look. Even though it’s almost finished, you can still learn something," Liu Banxia said.
"The first assistant to Teacher Wei Yuan is Li Hao, one of our current interns. His assigned mentor is Teacher Qi Wentai, but our Emergency Center utilizes a joint training model."
"This means that surgical assignments are considered comprehensively, fostering both cooperation and competition. This is one way we differ from other hospitals; you won’t just learn from your supervising attending, but from other doctors as well." 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"If you ask me, just stick with him. Right now, his are the surgeries they’re most eager to assist in; even the director’s surgeries are a second choice," Wei Yuan said.
"Why make it sound so dramatic? It’s not like I’m plotting a coup," Liu Banxia said, exasperated.
"The pressure of assisting the director in surgery is just too immense," Liu Yiqing chimed in.
"I get it. Seems I haven’t been strict enough. Next time you’re in my OR, I’ll work you all to the bone," Liu Banxia glared at her.
Liu Yiqing didn’t care; she had long grown accustomed to Demon King Liu’s trials. But it was different with Zhou Shuwen. You’d never see him smile, nor would he ever praise anyone. After a surgery, you wouldn’t even know if he was satisfied or not, or whether you’d performed adequately.
The dozen or so students, having received approval, gathered around the operating table to watch intently.
"Li Hao, don’t chicken out now. This is a test for you too. If you don’t pass, tsk tsk... I won’t say more. You know the consequences," Liu Banxia spoke up again.
"Teacher Liu, your threats are useless on me. As someone who dared to intern in the ICU, I’ve long since viewed life and death with indifference," Li Hao retorted.
"Internships carry risks; entering the medical field requires caution. If you truly want to learn valuable skills and make the most of this final year of your internship, then come to the Emergency Center."
"I came here to intern before you all. I’ve struggled, been exhausted, and cried, but I’ve never once regretted it. And it’s not just me; the others here feel the same way."
"Just one more piece of advice: don’t be fooled by Teacher Liu’s handsome appearance. Beneath that facade lies a dark, scheming heart."
"My goodness, Li Hao, you’re really aiming high, aren’t you?" Liu Banxia was amused.
"I have to build up my courage! Without the resolve of one burning their boats, how could I dare to brave the ICU?" Li Hao said.
The students were somewhat confused, but the others in the operating room chuckled. They all knew how much these ’six little ones’ had been tormented during their rotations in the ICU and pediatrics.
However, for them, it was a mix of pain and joy. They had suffered, true, but they had also naturally reaped rewards. But even so, in their hearts, Liu Banxia was still the Great Demon King.
Liu Banxia wasn’t bothered by Li Hao’s ’slander’; he had indeed been quite demanding of them.
Only this way could they master more knowledge in the shortest amount of time—not just master it, but gain a truly solid understanding.
Medicine allows no room for cutting corners. To improve surgical skills, besides practicing diligently on your own, most of it comes from getting up to the table and participating in actual surgeries.
