The Enhanced Doctor-Chapter 653 Liu Banxia’s New Idea
"Ah... this is quite a mess. You never know what's going to happen," Liu Banxia muttered as he returned to Qi Wentai's side.
"We still need to think about our patient. I've been pondering for a while, but I still don't have the slightest lead," Qi Wentai said with a bitter smile.
"No matter where we choose to make the incision, there will be many obstacles. If we take a risk, it has to be you who tries it. Your hands are steadier, more dexterous; perhaps you wouldn't hit the aorta."
"Don't flatter me. We still need to find a good surgical approach," Liu Banxia shook his head.
"Considering our current situation, we're trying to find a way through the narrow gaps. The choice of approach will inevitably be obstructed by other organs. As long as we can create enough space without damaging those organs, that will be sufficient."
"In that process, if we dissect and mobilize some of the organs, wouldn't that give us more room to maneuver? And it wouldn't affect our surgical field of view either, right?"
Qi Wentai thought about it and nodded. "That's how we usually proceed with our operations. However, the location of this patient's tumor is really awkward."
"A retroperitoneal tumor is already difficult to handle. Now, because the tumor is quite large, it has already displaced some of the other organs, making it even harder to manage."
"So, let's not rush this. My mind's a complete jumble right now; I can't visualize the patient's abdominal cavity. Later, I'll get a model and study it to see if I can find a feasible plan," Liu Banxia said with a laugh.
"There's another thing. In a couple of months, new interns will arrive, and we in General Surgery might need to provide dedicated training. Do you think this will affect our normal work?"
Qi Wentai thought for a moment and shook his head. "I don't think it should be much of a problem. Anyway, our workload in the Emergency Center is already very high."
"Currently, we're still General Surgery, but much of the time we also cover the work of the Trauma Department; it's just that we don't have such fine distinctions."
"You don't need to worry about training the interns and resident physicians. Our General Surgery team can handle it. Plus, with Xu Yino and her colleagues joining, it'll be even easier."
"You have that much confidence?" Liu Banxia asked in surprise.
"Of course. All we need to do is supervise their work and conduct basic technical training. As for surgical skills training, well, there's the Director, you, Dr. Shi, and Dr. Wei," Qi Wentai said with a smile.
Liu Banxia shook his head helplessly. "It's not as simple as that. It's really been a headache for me lately. We need to ensure both quality and that they show progress."
"Actually, things are running smoothly in our General Surgery Department and the Emergency Center. It's the Inpatient Department that's more complicated. Do you have any ideas?"
Qi Wentai chuckled and shook his head. "I really don't have any suggestions in this regard. I'm not deliberately trying to gloat; I genuinely have no concept."
"Actually, I'm very glad you're blazing the trail. When it's my turn to be chief resident, I'll have a path to follow. At least I won't have to worry about messing up. The worst that can happen is it'll be a bit more demanding."
"You need to focus on this patient. We have to come up with a decision by tonight. Otherwise, we'll have to let them seek help from other hospitals. We can't let other hospitals get there first."
Liu Banxia nodded. "Alright, I'll think it over carefully. No matter what, I have to find a way. If it were a stage III or IV cancer patient, we wouldn't put so much effort into it. But if we don't remove this tumor for this patient, it would be a real pity."
This was his honest opinion. If they really let the patient go, it wouldn't just be the patient's regret; it would be his regret too.
Based on the current assessment, it's most likely a benign tumor. But what about in the long run? We don't even need to consider it growing larger and affecting other organs; just the possibility of malignant transformation would increase significantly.
But right now, his mind was indeed a bit of a mess. There were too many things entangled. He needed to think through each one properly before he could calm down and focus on the case.
There were two main issues troubling him right now: the teaching and training work, and the application for the deputy director position. And the teaching and training work, it seemed, could also affect his application for deputy director.
It looked like he really needed to schedule some time off in the next couple of days to chat with Comrade Old Qiu. He had to figure out how to navigate these complex interplays.
Even though they were two completely different systems, the general principles shouldn't be too different.
As for the teaching and training work, he already had a rough idea. He planned to implement it step by step.
One couldn't expect all interns and resident physicians to be fully dedicated to learning. What the hospital could offer was merely a way to spur them on.
Then, from among these interns, he would identify the promising ones and train them to a higher standard.
Of course, this would require a more detailed training and assessment plan, which might also impact the work of other departments. After he had thought it through properly, he would still need to go and discuss it with the directors of those departments.
The directors in the Inpatient Department were like local magnates. It wasn't like the Emergency Center here, where everyone from the various departments would gather whenever he called.
"Teacher Liu, isn't it time for lunch?"
While he was pondering, Liu Yiqing came over.
"Ah... I was so preoccupied with my thoughts that I forgot the most important thing. Is the patient with delayed hemorrhage out of surgery yet?" Liu Banxia asked.
Liu Yiqing shook her head. "We'll have to wait a little longer, but a member of the patient's family has already come down to apologize to Teacher Zhang."
"That's good. Otherwise, it would have been quite troublesome to handle. It's always best if these things can be resolved internally." Only then did Liu Banxia truly feel relieved.
However, even so, Zhang Xiao should steer clear of this patient. This was also a way to protect him. Otherwise, even if only some routine complications occurred, the patient's family might still blame him.
"Just in time to freeload a meal off you guys."
Just as they were about to head to the cafeteria, Du Fancheng approached.
"Sure. Comrade Old Wu, any more patients? Let's go for a meal," Liu Banxia called out to Wu Mingyu.
"Sigh... It's been three days, and today is the first time I might get to eat lunch on time. President Liu, my dear President Liu, you have to find a way to sort things out with Director Xu and get him to send some people over quickly," Wu Mingyu complained.
"Don't you know what Director Xu is up to? He's just hoping I'll go over and pitch in unofficially for you. Let's take it slow. I'll go and have another word with the old man later," Liu Banxia said.
"I've finished talking with Brother Du, so now it's your turn. You also need to think about what kind of performance your Orthopedics Department should aim for in the upcoming teaching and training work."
"What are you talking about? Isn't that your responsibility? Why are you asking me?" Wu Mingyu asked cautiously.
"Hehe, this is a new method I came up with. You guys set your own goals; I won't interfere," Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"Anyway, if you still fail to achieve the goals you've set for yourselves, well, it's no skin off my back. It will certainly be an improvement on the previous training standards regardless. The rest is your own business."
"My heavens, are the renowned President Liu's intentions so malicious? Letting us dig our own pits and then jump into them?" Du Fancheng said helplessly.
"What choice do I have? I could only resort to this lousy idea," Liu Banxia shrugged.
"But I think it's quite feasible, don't you? Of course, my idea for this standard is that it should be flexible. If we discover promising candidates during the training process, we can raise the standards for them a bit."
"I just feel that no matter what standards are set, they tend to become rigid. This applies to these interns and residents, and to us, the supervising departments, as well."
"Then, gradually, everyone just starts going through the motions. You fool me, I fool you, and so it goes, until the year of internship or residency is over. Then the next batch comes in, and it's another year of the same old routine."
"Actually, based on my own experience, anyone who genuinely wants to learn can still acquire real skills, even if they end up doing more of the basic tasks."
"The Director has set quite high standards, so I want to introduce some flexibility into them. The workload will be significant. I'm not very familiar with the other departments yet, so I'll need you all to help me brainstorm and offer suggestions."
"Hehe, the Emergency Center already includes many departments, doesn't it? Then, using these ideas as a basis, I can go to the Inpatient Department and talk to the various 'branch chiefs' there to see if we can make further improvements."
"Anyway, I've been wracking my brains about this all morning, and this is all I've come up with. So, tell me, are you true brothers or not? No brotherhood, no training! Second Hospital training—caring for you, me, and everyone!"
"Pfft...!"
Liu Yiqing, who was following nearby, really couldn't hold it in any longer.
At first, she listened very attentively, knowing this matter would demand a lot of Teacher Liu's energy. But what on earth was he saying at the end? Why did it sound like an advertising jingle for some cheap mobile game?
Du Fancheng and Wu Mingyu also felt utterly helpless. Liu Banxia had shamelessly played the brotherhood card. What else could they do? Now that he had roped them into this, they had no choice but to help him come up with some ideas.
"I want to eat pork trotters," Wu Mingyu said.
"Then what should I eat? I feel like pork trotters is letting him off too easily," Du Fancheng chimed in.
"Teacher Du, the cafeteria's stewed dish is actually pretty good," Liu Yiqing suggested with a smile.
"Alright then, the stewed dish it is," Du Fancheng said.
"Old Wu, why do I get the feeling we're selling ourselves cheap? Can't we try to angle for a bigger reward?"
"When dealing with him, don't even think about taking advantage," Wu Mingyu said seriously.
"What are you talking about? I think my method is excellent. Everyone can participate. That's what I call 'sharing the fun for all'!" Liu Banxia stated earnestly.
This was the countermeasure he had been mulling over all morning. Although it was just a rough outline for now, it could be gradually fleshed out.
