The Enhanced Doctor-Chapter 648 are all looking forward to the changes in education and training
Stepping out of Zhou Shuwen's office, Liu Banxia felt a heavy weight on his heart. Leading wasn't an easy job. Despite many people wanting to be in power, one had to be prepared to bear the stress that came with it.
Zhou Shuwen seemed to be equally conflicted about whether to add the fecal transplantation project, which was probably why he'd said more today. As the Deputy Chief Director of the Second Hospital and manager of an ever-expanding emergency center, the pressure on him was likely heavier than Liu Banxia could comprehend.
No one had it easy. Once you took on this kind of work, you had to carry the associated worries.
Seeing the lights on in Emergency Rooms One and Two, Liu Banxia casually asked, "Oh? Another emergency patient?" 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
"One acute abdominal pain, and one e-bike collision with a car. Wang Chao and Qi are leading the interns in treating them," Shi Lei replied.
Liu Banxia rubbed his face. "Boss, how are things going with your girlfriend? Do you two talk on the phone regularly or anything?"
"We haven't called, but we've messaged each other," Shi Lei said.
"Wang Chao is off tomorrow, and I'm off the day after. When are you planning to take a day off? You can't keep working like this. We have more people here now, and Xu Yino and the others are trained up. Things are a lot easier."
"Ugh… there's just too much going on right now; I can't just take a break, can I? This training and education work really has me tied down," Liu Banxia sighed.
"It's fine. You guys take your leave when it's due. I'll take mine whenever something comes up or when I need to. Everyone was very considerate of me during the New Year; I can't act like I'm unaware of that."
"It's not that serious. We all know that being the chief resident is tiring for you, so we try not to call you for emergency tasks unless it's absolutely necessary," Shi Lei said with a smile.
"You should focus your energy on the training and education work, and on departmental management. Then, dedicate any remaining energy to surgeries. That would be better than anything."
"What are you getting at? Is it really that serious?" Liu Banxia said helplessly.
"Of course it is. The current situation is that we have enough surgeons. However, the Anesthesiology Department is a bit short on anesthesiologists," Shi Lei said.
"If we can minimize the time for each surgery, they'll be able to get more rest. For surgeries here in the emergency center, we definitely prioritize using our own Anesthesiology Department. But the inpatient department is also transferring quite a few surgeries over now, and they're really exhausted."
"Sigh, it's a chronic problem, a real headache. The Anesthesiology Department and the ICU have truly become major persistent issues," Liu Banxia said helplessly.
"I was just thinking of asking the director if we could implement some policies for training interns for these two departments, perhaps even targeted recruitment."
"But then I saw how many things the director is currently managing, so I didn't bring it up. I plan to wait until I've thought it through properly."
"So, if you take on more surgeries, you can also help lighten the director's load. Xu Yino and the others have essentially been trained up by you ahead of schedule. We can keep an eye on the rest of the work for you," Shi Lei said.
"Alright, I'll see how things go. Assign me a few more surgeries in the next couple of days. But regarding this training and education work, do you have any pointers?" Liu Banxia asked.
Shi Lei shook his head vigorously. "Nope, nothing to do with me. Go ask someone else." After saying that, Shi Lei quickly slipped away.
Liu Banxia felt helpless. These guys were too cunning. The moment he mentioned the training and education work, it was like a hot potato; each one dodged it faster than the last.
Normally, he would have just gone back to his books. But today, his thoughts were a bit muddled. He looked around and, noticing the ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) department seemed a bit quiet, he ambled over.
"Old Du, how has work been for you lately?" Liu Banxia asked in a serious tone.
"It's definitely a bit more relaxed here than in the inpatient department. Over there, we see a lot more patients. Here, it's no more than fifteen a day, I'd say," Du Fancheng said with a smile.
"How come you're free today? These past few days, it seems like you've been the busiest person in the entire emergency center. Always one thing after another."
"It's manageable, I suppose. Even though I'm the chief resident, I can at least get a full night's sleep. Having more to do during the day isn't too hard to bear," Liu Banxia said casually.
"If you run into any difficulties over here, just let me know, and I'll handle the coordination. But you don't have that many lab tests in your department, do you?"
Du Fancheng nodded. "For now, it's manageable. But it's hard to say when the patient load might increase. When we first transferred over, we only had a few patients a day."
"However, most of our current patients are elderly, mainly with ear-related conditions. There's no need for surgeries at the moment. When is the Plastic Surgery Department coming over? We actually collaborate with them quite a lot."
Liu Banxia nodded. "I'm waiting for news on that too. They were supposed to come over soon, but I don't know why it's hit a snag. The Orthopedics Department is currently swamped with patients, so their handover isn't complete yet."
"Once these two departments arrive, and then Urology, our setup here will be pretty much complete. Aside from other considerations, at least the basic framework will be in place. After that, it's just a matter of expanding the medical teams, and then we can participate in the evaluations."
"Only then will our emergency center truly achieve some scale. I believe each department needs to have at least four attending physicians, right?"
"That would be quite something. But I imagine the patient volume by then won't be small either," Du Fancheng said.
"Exactly. So, to expand our team of doctors, we need to train our own people. Right? Any thoughts on that?" Liu Banxia quickly asked.
Du Fancheng shot him an annoyed glance. "I was wondering why you were being so kind, coming over to show concern for me. Turns out you came for nothing. The nature of our department? It's a field that's difficult to master in medicine."
"Besides, many ENT doctors gradually transition into general surgery, since most demand for cosmetic procedures is facial."
"Plastic surgery is lucrative. They can hone their skills here. Once they're proficient enough, they can leave to start their own practice, so not many end up staying."
"Often, once their training is complete, they 'fly the coop.' I almost took off myself. But after some thought, I figured this is my specialty, so it's better to stay put and be content."
"Uh... Old Du, aren't you getting this backward? Wasn't I supposed to be the one venting to you? How did it turn into you venting to me?" Liu Banxia said helplessly.
"That's just how it is, can't be helped. It's not just us; actually, all hospitals face the problem of staff attrition."
"Besides, young people these days tend to be more restless and have stronger personalities. It makes being a mentor even more tiring. Not everyone can be like Xu Yino and his group."
"I understand. So you're saying we don't necessarily have to focus solely on solutions for each department, but also need to consider things from the interns' perspective, right?" Liu Banxia asked.
Du Fancheng nodded. "That's more or less it. Ultimately, it comes down to the individuals. Everyone's been discussing reforms for training and education lately, and they're keen to see what new plan you can devise."
"Training and education are the responsibilities of every department. It's not that we don't want to teach them or develop their practical skills. But you know that among the students we mentor, those who can reach the level of Xu Yino and his group within a year are extremely rare, right?"
Liu Banxia nodded. Of course, he knew that. That's why he would have to lower the difficulty significantly in this regard; he couldn't use Xu Yino and his peers as the standard.
"So, that's where the problem becomes clear. If the students' motivation isn't stimulated, how do you expect us to teach them?" Du Fancheng said with a smile.
"We can only resort to cramming knowledge into them and hope for the best regarding how much they absorb. Because of their lack of initiative, we don't know what they haven't grasped versus what they've already mastered."
"It's actually similar to learning in a classroom. Even though they've been medical students for a long time, working in a hospital is vastly different from what they imagined."
"If you can coordinate these two aspects well, I think your training and education plan should be much easier to formulate, right? I'm only telling you this much because it's you; I wouldn't say this to anyone else."
Liu Banxia thought for a moment and nodded. This was his first time supervising interns. The reason it seemed like he was doing a good job was fundamentally due to the proactive initiative of Xu Yino and the others.
They were naturally eager to learn and had a strong thirst for knowledge. That's why he felt a sense of satisfaction while teaching them and, without realizing it, ended up teaching them a great deal.
Imagine if they took a long time to learn every procedure he taught them. How would he feel then? Would he still have such strong motivation to figure out how to train them?
"Thanks. Otherwise, I would have kept thinking that just by us supervising doctors putting pressure on the interns, we could make them study seriously," Liu Banxia said earnestly.
"Pressure? How exactly would we apply it?" Du Fancheng said with a wry smile.
"They're just here for internships. Much of the time, we're teaching while working. Our own working hours are already long, so theirs will inevitably be extended significantly."
"If the pressure becomes too great and something goes wrong, we'll all be in serious trouble. I believe the primary task is figuring out how to fully motivate these young people."
"Alright, I'll give this some more thought," Liu Banxia said.
"A good portion of the interns coming from the medical school this time should be quite promising. At the very least, my lecture there shouldn't have been for nothing. We'll screen them carefully when the time comes."
"Got some ideas already?" Du Fancheng asked curiously.
Liu Banxia shook his head honestly. "Not yet. It's just that we need to consider it from both angles. We'll see how it goes; there's still some time, anyway."
"Well then, good luck with that. We're actually really looking forward to it and hope there'll be some changes," Du Fancheng said with a smile.
Liu Banxia smiled. This long conversation had given him some valuable insights.
