Chapter 633: 633 I’m sorry for the trouble

Early the next morning, before dawn, Liu Banxia got up and went directly to the patient’s room.

"Teacher Liu, there has been no change in the oxygen saturation, and defecation occurred once last night. There has been some coughing, which has become more frequent, and the body temperature has dropped by 0.5 degrees," Xu Yino, who had been keeping watch here, quickly reported.

Liu Banxia nodded. "You rest for a while. Later, I will arrange for the child to have a colonoscopy."

"Teacher Liu, should I stay on a bit longer?" Xu Yino asked tentatively.

"You take a nap first. When it’s time for the colonoscopy, I’ll call you," Liu Banxia said.

Without any delay, Xu Yino climbed onto an empty bed nearby. He really needed to rest and regain his strength; these past few hours had been relentless and not easy to endure.

"Dr. Liu, thank you and Dr. Xu," the patient’s father said softly. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

"Well, it’s nothing. The key is for us to diagnose the child’s illness," Liu Banxia said.

"Please try to recall in detail if the child has shown any particular or unusual signs recently. I thought about it all night yesterday, and I still feel that these symptoms shouldn’t have appeared so suddenly."

"Or has the child ever had a history of trauma? Were there any abnormalities during previous colds? Did they get better after taking medicine?"

The patient’s father furrowed his brows and thought carefully. "No injuries. My daughter is strong-willed. She’s all about studying and insists on being in the top three of her class."

"She didn’t do well in the final exam last term and ended up in fifth place. She didn’t go out to play during the holiday; all she did was study. Could that be the reason? Being too tired from studying?"

"That shouldn’t be the reason. Currently, there are symptoms of a lung infection; otherwise, there wouldn’t be pus in the bronchi," Liu Banxia said.

"Have you or your wife felt unwell these past few days? Any coughing, runny nose, changes in appetite, or lack of energy?"

The couple shook their heads; they had been perfectly normal.

Just then, Huang Bo walked in from outside. He was surprised to see Liu Banxia already sitting there.

"Teacher Liu, I can keep an eye on things here. You go downstairs and attend to other matters," Huang Bo quickly said.

"Xu Yino is catching up on sleep. The main thing is to monitor the child’s oxygen saturation. If it starts dropping quickly, intubate immediately. If it drops slowly, call me," Liu Banxia said.

"I’ve scheduled the child’s colonoscopy as the first one. When it’s time, wake Xu Yino. You two go and perform the colonoscopy on the child. Notify me immediately if there are any results."

"Okay," Huang Bo replied.

"Dr. Liu, thank you so much," the child’s father said gratefully.

They had come for treatment late last night, and so many doctors had helped. Xu Yino had even stayed with them. Even though the father didn’t fully understand everything, he knew this level of care was beyond the standard treatment protocol.

Although the child’s illness had not yet been diagnosed, he still felt this gratitude.

Liu Banxia didn’t say anything and went outside. He checked the time and decided to get breakfast first.

"Dr. Liu, are you this busy every day? You’ve just gotten married," Zhou Qiang called out, seeing him arrive so early.

"I don’t have a choice. I’m currently the chief resident. Just have to endure it. It won’t be for much longer, then someone else can suffer," Liu Banxia said with a smile.

"Alright then, the usual? Three steamed buns, a bowl of millet porridge, four tea eggs, and some assorted pickles?" Zhou Qiang asked.

"Can I get unlimited refills on the millet porridge today?" Liu Banxia joked.

"You can have refills of anything, as long as you enjoy your meal," Zhou Qiang said with a laugh.

In his heart, Liu Banxia was a great guy. He ate a lot and often organized small events with pig’s trotters or chicken legs; anyway, thanks to him, their sales had significantly increased.

"Huh? These pickled cucumbers taste great today! Where did you get the shrimp oil?" Liu Banxia asked curiously after taking a bite.

"Let me tell you, you can’t buy this stuff outside. A relative of mine marinates it themselves; it’s completely different from what they sell out there. You like it, huh? I’ll bottle some up for you to take next time," Zhou Qiang said.

"Alright, I’ll take you up on that then," Liu Banxia replied casually.

A true friend indeed, Liu Banxia mused. And this shrimp oil is so flavorful. He was very satisfied with his meal.

"You look a bit down. What’s wrong?" Zhou Qiang asked casually as he came over after filling the shrimp oil bottle.

"I admitted a child late last night, and we still haven’t figured out what’s wrong. It’s a bit frustrating. I’ll have to continue running tests during the day," Liu Banxia said.

"Ah... your line of work is really tough," Zhou Qiang sighed.

"Anyway, I’ve made up my mind. I won’t let my kid study medicine in the future. It’s too exhausting. Day in and day out, how much time do they actually have for themselves?"

"What can you do? It’s still a bit better here. Look at how exhausted the folks in anesthesiology are," Liu Banxia said.

"It’s all for the salary, right? At least it’s more stable than other jobs. So what if it’s tiring? You have to earn money, otherwise, how would you eat or drink?"

"Alright, I’ll get you a couple more tea eggs. You need to replenish your energy," Zhou Qiang said, grabbing two for him.

Liu Banxia never stood on ceremony with Zhou Qiang, especially when it came to food. Given his appetite, another couple of tea eggs wouldn’t be a problem at all.

After eating his fill, his spirits lifted a bit. Back in the main hall of the Emergency Center, Xu Hui happened to be walking over.

"The kid isn’t showing any other symptoms right now. And by the way, today’s shrimp oil cucumbers were excellent," Liu Banxia commented.

"You didn’t stay up all night, did you? You can’t keep pushing yourself like this," Xu Hui said.

"Of course not. I just woke up a bit early. I’ll let you know when the colonoscopy results are out. I’ve already instructed Huang Bo," Liu Banxia replied.

Xu Hui nodded and hurriedly made his way to the cafeteria.

The early morning hours might seem ample, but for them, they never felt like enough. They had to get up early for breakfast, followed by meetings, ward rounds, and then seeing patients.

Currently, Liu Banxia was the one who wasn’t as swamped in the mornings. Unless something required a group discussion, he usually took the opportunity to chat with people individually when they weren’t busy.

He was still struggling to understand the patient’s condition. If things really took a turn for the worst, it might actually be lung cancer.

The main issue was that the bronchial findings under the endoscope were so unusual. Best to wait for the tumor marker screening results.

"Oh, Sister Li, you were busy yesterday even on your day off?" Liu Banxia quickly greeted her when he saw Zhou Li walk in carrying a large thermos.

"I made some braised pork bones for Qiaoqiao. You can have a piece," Zhou Li said.

"How did you know that Qiaoqiao was coming today?" Liu Banxia asked, surprised.

"Ha! What don’t I know? I heard you admitted a rather complicated patient last night?" Zhou Li asked.

Liu Banxia nodded. "We haven’t confirmed the diagnosis yet. I almost had to intubate and send the child to the ICU immediately. We’ll see how things go today. If it really comes to it, we’ll have to transfer the child there."

"Alright, I understand the situation," Zhou Li said.

"Sister Li, do you have any thoughts on training future intern nurses?" Liu Banxia asked.

"What thoughts could I have? We’ll just stick to the usual methods. But we’re fine here. With so many patients in our Emergency Center now, they’ll get plenty of hands-on opportunities," Zhou Li said.

"What’s wrong? Still worried about the teaching and training stuff? Didn’t you guys go to the medical school to give a speech yesterday? You’ll probably be able to recruit some good interns, right?"

"That’s one aspect. The key is also improving the standard of teaching and training. That part is a bit complicated. Fortunately, there’s still some time, so I can sort things out gradually," Liu Banxia said.

"Later, I also need to check in with the Orthopedics Department and see when Director Xu will free up their doctors. Once Orthopedics and Plastic Surgery are in place, we’ll be all set here. I won’t have to worry about the surgical side of things at all," Liu Banxia remarked.

"It should be soon, right? Qing Kewa, come over here! I have some braised pork bones for you," Zhou Li called out.

Qing Kewa, who had just arrived at the Emergency Center, WHOOSHED over at Zhou Li’s call. She had also been craving Zhou Li’s braised pork bones.

"Aren’t you afraid you’ll gain weight?" Liu Banxia asked curiously.

"I don’t gain weight easily anyway. By the way, why did you guys eat barbecue secretly?" Qing Kewa asked, sounding a little upset.

"You’re using the wrong words! We ate it out in the open; you just weren’t there. When you have some time off, go find Qiaoqiao, and you two can go have a great meal," Liu Banxia said helplessly.

Qing Kewa’s Chinese was actually quite good, but she sometimes used words incorrectly. It made him feel a bit guilty now. They couldn’t exactly call her over for late-night skewers, could they?

Fortunately, this girl was relatively easy to appease. With his promise, she let the matter drop.

"Oh? Brother Lin, what brings you here?" Liu Banxia said. He was just about to organize some case files when he saw Lin Chenglin walk in from outside carrying a bag.

"I still need to have the surgery. I’ve already contacted Director Xiao; it’s scheduled for the day after tomorrow. But he suggested I come two days early to get my body adjusted," Lin Chenglin explained.

"Alright, go get the admission procedures done then. Sister Li, Brother Lin’s surgery is the day after tomorrow. Could you arrange a room for him? Money is no object, so go for the high-standard option," Liu Banxia teased.

"It really does need to be high-standard," Lin Chenglin said with a laugh, patting Liu Banxia’s shoulder.

This left Liu Banxia a bit baffled. What was going on?

But before he could ask, Huang Bo came running over.

"Teacher Liu, the colonoscopy wasn’t successful. There’s severe stenosis in the intestinal tract. The enlarged intestine doesn’t seem to be due to gas; it’s likely edema," Huang Bo reported.

"Were you able to see anything at all?" Liu Banxia asked, frowning.

"We couldn’t see anything. The child was very resistant. But the situation there seems much more severe than in the bronchi. Should we consider airway protection?" Huang Bo asked.

Liu Banxia thought for a moment, then nodded. "Explain the situation clearly to the parents. If the child’s condition deteriorates further, we might not even get a chance to intubate. Use a thinner tube."

He sighed inwardly. This is troublesome. The symptoms in the intestines and the bronchi seem to be quite similar. What kind of bacterial infection could be causing this?
