The Enhanced Doctor-Chapter 617: There are Obstetrics and Gynecology departments, so there is a foundation
Although the system enabled Liu Banxia to grasp medical skills with double the efficiency, in truth, he didn't possess even half of Wang Chao's aptitude for these kinds of social intricacies.
This was also a fundamental issue. Without that kind of immersive learning from a young age, and lacking the right environment and experiences later on, achieving mastery through self-study was truly difficult. If he possessed that kind of ability, he wouldn't have muddled through his residency training in such a sorry state.
Qiu Mingyuan was much younger than him, but don't let his youth fool you; he had presence, handled important occasions well, and could organize matters with perfect clarity. Wang Chao's medical skills might not have been superior to his, but in this particular aspect, Wang Chao was vastly more capable.
It was just that Wang Chao harbored no other ambitions in these areas; at most, he treated them as a minor pastime. Otherwise, the Emergency Center or the Second Hospital would have another enthusiast fervently delving into the role of an "unofficial head of personnel."
After this discussion with Wang Chao, Liu Banxia's thoughts became much clearer. He knew he had to contend for things when necessary, and sometimes, that contention wasn't necessarily for his own benefit. Besides, his current primary task was to excel at the work at hand. Right now, this involved two main things: the teaching and training work at the Second Hospital, and the interview for the program. He could muddle through interviews with ordinary media outlets, but for an interview with the central state media, he absolutely had to elevate his game.
Naturally, Liu Banxia paid for lunch. It wasn't easy to get him to treat; he was too cunning, and usually, he was the one outmaneuvering them.
"Tsk tsk, it would be wonderful if we could often enjoy meals on President Liu's tab. They just get more and more delicious," Wang Chao said gleefully on the way back.
"Teacher Wang, if the transplant for the patient with Clostridium difficile is successful, can we also get you to treat us to a meal?" Xu Yino asked.
"That's a must. At the very least, all my hard work over this long period wouldn't have been in vain, and the patient could also lead a normal life," Wang Chao replied. "But have you all really thought it through? About staying in this sunless Emergency Center, constantly under the shadow of the Great Demon King? Life ahead won't be easy, you know."
"What other choice do we have? We're already used to Teacher Liu's learning pace. If we were to switch places, we'd have to readjust all over again," Xu Yino said with a pained expression.
"That's right," Liu Banxia affirmed. "It's like the saying: 'Easy to go from frugal to lavish, but hard to go from lavish to frugal.' You've all gotten used to 'feasting' here. If you went to a laid-back department, it'd be a wonder if you still had any drive."
"Chao, do you remember Sun Fengjiao? She somewhat regrets her decision now. Although her life is very stable, it lacks passion. It seems most of her time now is spent actively trying to conceive."
"She's married already? So quickly?" Wang Chao asked in surprise.
"Isn't that so? She has plenty of time. Regular work hours, an occasional shift—if she doesn't get married, what else is there to do?" Liu Banxia countered.
"Alas... a fine young man like myself is still single. President Liu, you need to put in more effort for me!" Wang Chao lamented with mock despair.
"I'll ask Qiaoqiao to keep an eye out. Ever since she successfully played matchmaker for the Chief, she seems quite enthusiastic about this sort of thing," Liu Banxia nodded.
"Then it's settled!" Wang Chao said happily.
His mother was constantly nagging him about this. Whenever he had any time off, he was either on a blind date or on his way to one.
It was just that his mother had her own standards for a daughter-in-law, which were quite different from his own preferences in a partner. So, despite going on numerous blind dates, not a single one had worked out.
"Banxia, you're back just in time! Prepare for an incoming patient. A woman, 35 weeks pregnant, was in a car accident. The situation is somewhat critical!"
The moment Liu Banxia returned to the Emergency Center hall, Shi Lei shouted out. Liu Banxia immediately responded, "Get ready now! Has Obstetrics been notified?"
"We've already notified them; they're on their way down," Shi Lei replied.
Liu Banxia felt somewhat relieved. If it was truly an urgent obstetric situation, their team could handle it.
After waiting less than three minutes, the ambulance pulled up at the entrance of the Emergency Center.
"Patient is 26 years old, 35 weeks pregnant, passenger-side impact injuries. Blood pressure 80/100, heart rate 120. Complains of chest and abdominal pain. Head laceration, blunt trauma to the right arm and chest," the paramedic reported.
"To Resuscitation Room Two! After transfer, connect the cardiac monitor, fetal heart monitor, and establish IV access!" Liu Banxia ordered.
"Doctor, doctor, save Huizhen, and save the child too! No, you have to save both of them! Doctor! Huizhen..."
Just as they were heading inside, a male patient burst in from outside, clutching his head.
"That's the patient's husband. He has a head laceration too," the paramedic pushing the gurney quickly explained.
The patient then became visibly anxious, her mouth falling open. In her distress, she seemed unable to speak.
"Rest assured, we will do everything to save both mother and child. The obstetrician is on her way down. Shi Lei, you attend to him first," Liu Banxia quickly instructed.
"Doctor, save the child," the patient finally managed to articulate.
"We'll save both. Alright, on three! One, two, three—transfer!" Liu Banxia called out.
After that, Liu Banxia took out his stethoscope and immediately auscultated the patient.
"Absent breath sounds on the right side. Suspected pleural effusion. Get a chest X-ray," Liu Banxia stated after auscultation.
"Doctor, doctor..."
Hearing Liu Banxia's urgent tone, the patient grew nervous again, clutching her abdomen and starting to struggle.
"Don't worry. At 35 weeks, one X-ray won't harm the fetus. You have chest and abdominal pain, so we must do this examination," Liu Banxia said gently. "If something happens to you, it won't be good for the baby either. Relax, we'll just do this one scan to check for any fractures in your chest."
Hearing this, the patient's emotions finally stabilized somewhat.
The staff moved her aside, and a portable chest X-ray was taken immediately.
"Right-sided pleural effusion. Xu Yino, prepare for chest tube insertion," Liu Banxia said, looking at the displayed X-ray. "Sister Huang, perfect timing. Please do an abdominal ultrasound on the patient to check the baby's condition. Also, run a rapid blood panel, cross-match, and prepare for a possible transfusion."
Huang Ying did not hesitate and immediately began the bedside ultrasound.
"Fetal heart rate is normal, fetal activity is normal. The fetus and placenta appear unharmed for now. No free fluid in the abdomen, so that area should be fine too," Huang Ying reported during the ultrasound.
"Okay, did you hear that? The baby is fine. So now, you're our main concern. Don't worry, leave it to us," Liu Banxia said to the patient.
The patient nodded.
By then, Xu Yino had finished her preparations and proceeded with the chest tube insertion.
"Teacher Liu, her blood pressure is dropping!" Miao Rui shouted.
"Start the blood transfusion immediately! Get a chest CT after the tube is in. We'll decide on cardiothoracic intervention based on the CT findings," Liu Banxia said, frowning.
It wasn't just her blood pressure that was dropping; a considerable amount of blood flowed out from the drainage tube after insertion. The crucial thing now was to determine the cause of this bleeding. If they couldn't pinpoint it, a major operation might be unavoidable.
"Is every emergency case this intense?" Huang Ying asked curiously.
Liu Banxia nodded. "We'd be even more stressed if you weren't here. Just look at the expressions on our residents; pregnant patients are what they fear encountering the most. It's two lives at stake; we can't afford a single misstep. Our knowledge of obstetrics is truly insufficient. Do you have any commitments this afternoon? We might need you on standby."
"Oh? Why is that?" Huang Ying asked.
"The patient's bleeding is quite significant, and I can't yet determine the cause. If a major surgery is required, it could potentially endanger the fetus," Liu Banxia explained.
Huang Ying nodded. "Alright, I'm free this afternoon."
"Chief, how's the patient's husband?" Liu Banxia asked after stepping outside.
Shi Lei gave a wry smile. "He's refusing all treatment and has gone to wait by the CT room. I did a preliminary check: heart and lung sounds are normal, pupils are normal. He probably just needs stitches."
Liu Banxia approached the traffic police officer. "Officer, what happened to them? It looks like a pretty serious collision."
"They were proceeding through an intersection normally when a car ran a red light at high speed and collided with them. We suspect the driver was either drunk or on drugs, as they fled the scene after the accident," the traffic police officer stated.
"Sigh... Isn't it good enough to just live a normal life? Why do people have to court death like this?" Liu Banxia lamented. "This patient's condition is still unclear. She has bleeding in her right chest cavity, and she might need surgery. And with the baby involved, it's very risky. She's gone for a CT scan now. If you don't have anything urgent, you could go upstairs and check on Dazhuang. I'll let you know if anything develops here. Anyway, the relevant paperwork will have to wait until after she's been treated."
"Alright, Dr. Liu. Call me if you need anything," the officer said with a nod, then departed.
In truth, he was mainly there to get an update on the situation; there wasn't much need for him to remain.
Although the CT results weren't back yet, Liu Banxia headed to the Cardiothoracic Surgery office.
"That emergency patient from just now, does she need surgery?" Chen Xuehai asked.
"I have a feeling she might. I've already spoken with Sister Huang from Obstetrics. If surgery is needed, she'll join us in the OR," Liu Banxia replied.
"That's good to hear. It's quite reassuring," Chen Xuehai said with a nod and a smile.
"You're worried too?" Liu Banxia asked, surprised.
Chen Xuehai gave him a helpless look. "If you're apprehensive, why wouldn't I be? Anyone would find this kind of case daunting. Let's just hope it's only a significant accumulation of blood due to the time elapsed. It would be best if we can avoid surgery."
Liu Banxia nodded. "That's what I'm hoping too. The driver responsible for the accident even fled. Who knows when they'll catch him."
"That person is truly audacious, daring to flee in broad daylight?" Chen Xuehai mused.
"Either drunk or on drugs. Anyone with a shred of normal reasoning wouldn't do something like this," Liu Banxia said.
Chen Xuehai could only shake his head helplessly.
Some things are truly hard to fathom. Everyone knows these substances are harmful, yet some people still indulge. And in the end? They harm others and destroy themselves. The situation domestically is still relatively good, unlike some of the things he had witnessed while studying abroad.
