The Enhanced Doctor-Chapter 615 High Hopes Placed on Liu Banxia
"How is it? Is it working?"
Upon returning to the hall, Liu Banxia saw Wang Chao there and quickly asked.
"We just finished a little while ago. We won't see results that quickly. Let's see if there's any relief in a day or two," Wang Chao said.
"How many more treatments are expected?" Liu Banxia asked curiously.
"If it really works, at least three or four more will be needed," Wang Chao answered after thinking for a moment. "However, compared to enemas, this can extend the cycle a bit, so there's no need to rush. I have to go out tomorrow to collect from the donor. My plan is to use material from a single person to avoid any other issues."
Liu Banxia nodded. "You're the one in charge of this. Roughly how many times a day is the patient having bowel movements now?"
"Between thirteen and fifteen times. If it weren't for the medication keeping him going, he would have been gone by now. This disease... it's truly terrible," Wang Chao lamented.
The people listening nearby nodded.
If it were just diarrhea, a bout lasting a day or two would, at worst, lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. But this patient? He endures this every single day. Even if fluid replacement and electrolyte correction weren't possible, would it really be that straightforward? Absolutely not. The patient has been in constant agony throughout this time.
Regardless of whether the fecal transplant works, it has at least given the patient a glimmer of hope, something to hold onto.
After chatting there for a while, Liu Banxia went up to the wards. The critical patients still required his attention. First on his list, naturally, was the hemophiliac. His condition wasn't severe at the moment, but because there was still some fluid in his abdominal cavity, he had to remain hospitalized. Even though the amount of fluid was very small, they couldn't afford to be complacent.
"Dr. Liu, am I pretty much okay now?" the young man in the adjacent bed asked.
"You're almost there. Your white blood cell count hasn't come down yet, but it should in another day or two. Then you can be discharged," Liu Banxia replied.
"Staying in the hospital for two or three days is alright, but any longer gets really boring. I don't even feel like sleeping much anymore; I get so much sleep every day," the young man remarked.
"Just enjoy it. Think about it: once you're discharged, how many opportunities will you have to live like this? Getting enough sleep every day—that's the dream life, isn't it?" Liu Banxia said.
"That's true. Even when I'm at home, I usually go to bed after 11 PM. Here, I'm often asleep by 10 or 10:30 PM," the man with hemophilia added with a smile.
"Exactly, so cherish it. Opportunities like this are rare. We doctors only get a full night's sleep when we're on vacation. In the hospital, there's never a quiet moment," Liu Banxia said.
"Dr. Liu, I heard the patient who was brought in late last night was in critical condition?" the young man asked curiously.
Liu Banxia nodded. "Yes, others performed the rescue. He's still in the ICU. Drunk driving and causing an accident... even if he recovers physically, he'll still face criminal charges."
"Dr. Liu, what about the traffic police officer who was admitted a few days ago?" the man with hemophilia asked.
"He's been transferred to a general ward, but his injuries are quite serious. He'll need to stay in bed for a good while and then undergo rehabilitation," Liu Banxia replied. "That's right. His case was also due to a drunk driver trying to evade a checkpoint. 'Don't drink and drive'—that's life-saving advice, and it absolutely must be followed."
"Alright, you two get some rest. I need to go to the next room to see a patient who's being discharged today. You can do some light exercise, just don't overdo it."
"Take care, Dr. Liu!" the young man called out warmly.
Liu Banxia waved and went to the next room. The patient he was going to see there was the man who had surgery for testicular cancer.
"Oh, all packed up already? How are you feeling?" Liu Banxia greeted him with a smile.
"Heh, pretty good. It's just that walking is still a bit uncomfortable. I keep dwelling on it," the patient replied with a smile.
"That's normal; there's always an adjustment period. Don't rush to find a job when you get home. You still need to rest for a few more days, and then we can talk about it," Liu Banxia comforted. "Being free of psychological burdens is what matters most. Sometimes, for the sake of treatment, you have to make sacrifices. At least your recovery will be much faster than someone who's had a partial liver or spleen resection."
The patient nodded. "Dr. Liu, don't worry. Before, my life felt worse than death. Now, at least I can live like a human being."
"Keep it up. You don't need to worry anymore. Just live a normal life from now on," Liu Banxia said.
"Alright, Dr. Liu. I'll go handle the discharge paperwork then and head back to my hometown for a bit," the patient said.
Liu Banxia patted his shoulder and graciously accepted his parents' thanks.
After briefly checking two more rooms, he considered his rounds complete and leisurely headed down to the lobby.
"Hey, Teacher Liu, you seem to be in a much better mood after your rounds in the wards. Why is that?" Xu Yino asked curiously.
"It's obvious, isn't it? He must have received a lot of thanks from patients. That's probably why we don't see him during morning rounds," Shi Lei added.
"Haha, the patients I saw today are either being discharged or will be in a day or two. They're all in good spirits, so naturally, I am too," Liu Banxia replied. "By the way, Liu Yiqing and Su Wenhao's rotation is ending soon. So, which two of you will be stepping up next? Start preparing."
Xu Yino and Miao Rui raised their hands.
"Teacher Liu, will we be going at the same time?" Xu Yino asked.
Liu Banxia shook his head. "After Liu Yiqing and Su Wenhao take a break, they'll return to general surgery. Then, after your rotation is over, we'll start rotating their internship placements again, beginning with those two."
"Oh, so this internship is going to be drawn out for quite a while then," Xu Yino said.
"Of course. I'm doing this out of consideration for you all. I can't bear to see you continuously tormented," Liu Banxia said with a straight face.
"Teacher Liu, I get the feeling you're actually worried that if we all go to the ICU and pediatrics, you won't have anyone left here to order around," Xu Yino asked, her eyes twinkling.
"What blatant truths are you spouting?" Liu Banxia retorted, then walked away with his hands behind his back.
The interns had long grown accustomed to this. Otherwise, it would be genuinely hard to accept Demon King Liu so brazenly admitting his little calculations.
"I can finally feel at ease about this group now. You guys should try to catch up on rest whenever possible," Liu Banxia said, approaching Shi Lei.
"Really? You can rest easy?" Shi Lei asked curiously.
Liu Banxia nodded. "Their fundamentals were already strong, and they've had a long internship period now. Honestly, for them, these last two months don't really make much of a difference. Besides, this is also to ensure they don't get too conspicuous. We don't want them to stand out so much that it makes our department look like we're doing things irregularly. We've always been strictly by the book here."
"That's true. Later on, let's increase the number of patients they see independently. Wei Yuan and I can also ease up on our supervision a bit, letting them handle more on their own as much as possible," Shi Lei nodded in agreement. "By the way, has the filming date for your program been set? Do we need to make any preparations here? I heard it's the national media this time, right?"
"Yes, it is, but the date isn't confirmed yet. My main goal is to fully showcase our emergency center," Liu Banxia replied. "So, the production team is still discussing how to adjust the content. I just feel it's rather pointless to have them just film me out and about, making a fuss."
"Why can't you appreciate why they're giving you so much exposure? You need to work hard for this!" Shi Lei sounded almost exasperated.
"It can't be helped. You know my personality. I'm actually quite apprehensive about being in the limelight like this now," Liu Banxia said with a wry smile. "I'm just worried I'll say the wrong thing, and then everything will be ruined. It's not about me personally, but it would affect our emergency center and the Second Hospital. This program will apparently be broadcast largely unedited. There might be some cuts, but the core filmed content will remain. That seems to be the trend these days, right? Nobody likes overly produced shows anymore."
"So what does that have to do with you? Let them film what they film. You just be yourself, can't you?" Shi Lei said, exasperated. "Whether you can become a deputy director is incredibly important. It would be breaking convention, and it's crucial for your future career development. Why are you so careless about this? Don't be so muddle-headed. Most of us here will probably spend the rest of our careers in the emergency center. It's easy to get in, but hard to leave. Having a leader we know, someone who looks out for everyone, is better than anything. You should aim to be firmly rooted in the emergency center. That way, everyone can support each other, both at work and in life."
"Boss, the way you put it, the pressure suddenly feels even greater," Liu Banxia said, a mix of amusement and exasperation in his voice.
"Don't get hung up on the exact words; that's more or less what I mean. Anyway, everyone has high hopes for you," Shi Lei said, waving his hand dismissively. "Whether you want it or not, as long as the hospital administration has this intention, you have to fight for that deputy director position. Because if you don't secure it, they might bring someone in from the outside. If it's a practical person, that's one thing. But what if we get someone who loves playing office politics? How would we manage then?"
"Boss, is there any talk about that?" Liu Banxia asked curiously.
"Do you even need to ask? Our department is a coveted prize right now. No attending physician wants to transfer in just to be an attending, but they'd fight tooth and nail for a deputy director spot," Shi Lei glared at him. "Don't be complacent. You need to take this seriously. Show some ambition, will you? Or do you expect people to spoon-feed you everything? This is decided."
Liu Banxia opened his mouth, but he didn't know what to say.
