The Emperor's Omega Is An Extra-Chapter 322: The Duke’s Sacrifice
Chapter 322: The Duke’s Sacrifice
After the organization detonated one of their trump cards and unleashed the berserk alphas, the whole world became extremely wary of them.
At least they were more cooperative this time than on the first day, when they were only forced to do so because of the empire’s strength. As Spade said, unless everyone were in the same alarming situation, the world would not mobilize its own forces.
"Son," the Duke barged inside the room where Arren often stayed during the day. It was his first time doing this without knocking or any polite gesture, which he usually does in the palace.
Arren turned around and looked at his father, their eyes meeting with an indescribable expression on their faces.
The Duke’s face looked a bit furious as he heaved a breath, trying to calm himself. He stared at Arren and then looked at what he was wearing for a few seconds before returning to Arren’s face as he clenched his teeth.
"Listen to me, Son." He took a step forward, stopping a few steps away from Arren. "Stay here and don’t come with us."
It was obvious that the Duke wanted to become firm in his tone as he ordered or reprimanded Arren, but it only sounded so worried and anxious instead.
Arren was now wearing a similar camouflaged suit that the Black Intel wore; it was a standard suit that was almost similar to the military’s uniform.
His hair also returned to its original color, which was black; he didn’t want it to be eye-catching for a very important mission of his life. They were already getting ready to attack the headquarters after a grueling three more days of preparations.
As they decided, Arren would come with Spade on this mission. He didn’t want to be left out; he needed this.
And so, as soon as the Duke heard of this, he left everything behind and ran all the way here.
No, he refused to let his son enter another dangerous situation.
Arren bit his lips; he knew that his father would react like this, and so he was always hesitating whether to tell him.
However, since they were here now... Arren took a deep breath and then shook his head, feeling the pain in his heart as he saw his father’s expression.
"I can’t, Dad."
The Duke’s mouth parted, obviously at a loss for a while. Eventually, he gritted his teeth and spat out in anger.
"Why?" His voice slightly became louder. "Arren! Be obedient right now and stay here!"
This was the first time that his father had raised his voice against him, and so Arren visibly flinched. Because of Duke Evan’s anger, he had barely noticed it.
His heart was fuming with rage, not at his son but at their situation. He felt so incompetent that his son needed to be subjected to more turmoil after escaping the last one.
Arren’s lips quivered, and he wanted to touch his father and try to calm his emotions down, but he only clenched his fist without doing anything.
He was aware that he couldn’t console his father with his spoiled actions alone; they needed to talk this out seriously.
"Dad... I want to go." Arren was firm, albeit with a slight tremor because of his painful emotions seeing his father like this. "I need to do this. I need to---" Before he could finish, the Duke interrupted him again.
"Do you have to do this? Son..." The Duke held Arren’s shoulders and looked at his eyes directly, worry evident in his eyes. "Please, son. I don’t want you to be in that demon’s vicinity again."
As someone who also knew the secret, even if he didn’t remember it, and it was only Arren who vaguely told him the events of the past timeline, the Duke also experienced a deja vu.
He felt so uneasy that hearing Arren come with them was enough for him to lose his mind.
"Son, please, listen to dad." The Duke pleaded, "Just wait for us, here, huh? I want you safe, Arren..."
The Duke was so scared; he knew that it had something to do with his fear of something happening again to his son. Although he also didn’t remember, the moment that he became aware of the past timeline, he also seemed to awaken the same fear and desire of him for the past.
The despair and rage, it bubbled inside of him, resulting in his being so afraid to let Arren go.
Arren’s lips quivered, and his eyes reddened in an instant. It was so hard to see his father pleading in front of him. It made him so mad that Arren wanted to scream his heart out.
This fucked-up situation that they were in was screwing all of them inside out. His decision was becoming more determined.
He blinked and shook his head. To not see his father’s expression, Arren embraced him. He repeatedly shook his head.
"Dad, I know," he whispered. "I’m scared," he then admitted, as he slowly felt his father embrace him. "All of this... It starts with someone, and it will end with him, too. Dad, I’m part of this too. I’m afraid, and it kept me awake sometimes."
Arren tightly embraced his father, wrinkling his clothes in return.
"Without seeing his end with my own eyes... I’ll never be safe and at ease. Dad, we all need this."
Arren’s hatred had not only accompanied him in his next lives, but it was engraved in his soul. It was beyond anger that no other treatment could achieve to treat.
He shut his eyes and remembered what Spade had told him. Even if he didn’t want to know his father’s outcome in his last life, he still asked in the end.
The Duke sacrificed himself.
Spade simply said that, without explicitly revealing the details, considering his mental state. And it was enough for Arren to conclude what happened.
Arren was also scared of this point.
"Dad, please... promise me." Arren lifted his head and looked at his father. "Think of me. Dad, as much as you can’t lose me... I also can’t lose you." freewēbnoveℓ.com
The Duke wanted to say something; his heart was still opposing all of this, but Arren’s next words were what made him helplessly stop.
"He is the root of our despair, Dad, we deserve this much. Whether it is the end or beginning, I don’t care." Arren’s eyes flickered in a dangerous light.
"We don’t need any sacrifice, from the things he owes us... His life is not even enough to repay us."
The viciousness of Arren’s words and his eyes carried a lot of hatred; the Duke also realized then...
Right. Arren is a victim of all this. It’s wrong to stop him because I’m scared.
The Duke shut his eyes firmly before opening them again and nodding.
If it was the end or a new beginning, he wanted to hold his son’s hands in facing that future. While doing so, a vague scene seemed to replay in his mind.
The fire, the dead bodies, a sphere, and himself.
The Duke sobbed, then kneeled and bowed.
"Please, forgive me, my son."
He also found out who created that drug as he kneeled and never stood up forever as the fire engulfed the whole laboratory.
For him, it wasn’t a sacrifice. It was for his incompetence to protect his son and... to shoulder the sins of his wife.
