The Eldest Daughter of a Rural Family-Chapter 1183 - 272: Adopting a Son for You_3
Chapter 1183: Chapter 272: Adopting a Son for You_3
Fang Hui approached with a sneaky grin, and Feng Shouxing also squeezed forward with a beaming smile.
"Qinqin! You’ve heard the rumors going around outside, haven’t you? The Eldest Young Master An has died, and that Wei Shu will return to her parents’ home for remarriage! You can’t have children anymore, but Mo Heng still needs a son, and she was his old flame, almost wedded to him. The Eldest Young Master An was infertile, but Wei Shu is capable of giving birth. You must plan ahead, don’t wait until it’s too late—when Mo Heng brings her into the household, it will be too late for you to do anything!" Fang Hui said with a face full of concern for her, spitting out all her words in one breath, "You might not be able to have children anymore, but you could still adopt one! Adopting a relative with blood ties is as good as having a child of your own! Our Yu Lang is handsome and intelligent—when he grows up, he’s sure to be both good-looking and capable, and he will be filial to you! Surely he’s better than those children of unknown origin, isn’t he?"
Pei Qin’s gaze shifted from her face to Feng Shouxing’s and finally settled on Feng Bo’s.
Seeing her look his way, Feng Bo immediately became alert and stared straight back at her, "Cousin! Even though my parents were insensitive before, they truly have your best interests at heart this time. If Yu Lang is adopted by you, he’ll be your son from now on. Our family will leave the Capital Jingcheng and won’t return. This is also our way of apologizing to and compensating you!"
Pei Qin looked at him coldly, "Feng Bo! Do you know that among you and Fang Liuming, I like you the least?"
Feng Bo’s eyes widened in shock. She liked him the least!?
"You are too brooding, too calculating, and narrow-minded, fortunately lacking in ability. But let me warn you, if I see another incident of such scheming from you, I will not stand idly by regarding your family affairs!" Pei Qin’s gaze pierced him as she spoke bluntly.
Chills ran down Feng Bo’s spine under her gaze, but his resentment grew even stronger. What did she mean by she liked him the least, because he was dark and calculating? When he had offered his heart to her, she had trampled on his sincerity! She looked down on him! When it came to Fang Liuming and Fang Liuyang, she’d help strangers, but she scorned him uniquely!
Seeing this, Fang Hui’s face started to look troubled, "Pei Qin! Don’t be so quick to reject the offer! Yu Lang is even more handsome and intelligent than Xiaolang, and we’re still reluctant to part with him! It’s only because you can’t have children and others are knocking at your door to steal your husband that we’re willing to go through the pain of sending Yu Lang to you. If it were someone else, who would be willing to part with their own healthy son!? Not to mention those who send children with no blood ties, they all have their own designs! We are your maternal aunt and truly have your best interests in mind! Once Yu Lang is with you, our family will leave the capital for good! Yu Lang will be your son, and he will honor you when he grows up!"
Pei Qin was so angry she almost wanted to laugh.
Just yesterday, she had been dreaming about donuts, and Mo Heng went out of his way to come home early today to fry donuts for her. When it was time to meet and he hadn’t returned, he went out to look for her. Around the corner, he saw Pei Qin being cornered by Fang Hui’s family; his eyes skimmed over the child, clad in new clothes, and murderous intent surged within him.
Feng Shouxing immediately felt his hair stand on end and reached out to pull Fang Hui aside.
Mo Heng was naturally cold to begin with, and the battlefield aura he carried, refined through the blood and souls of the enemy, was extraordinarily intimidating.
Feng Bo frowned and turned to look up at Mo Heng on horseback, "Aren’t you the one who claims to be forever faithful? Now that your cousin can’t bear children, does your promise still stand!? Can you endure not having a son!? Would you spend your life with her without taking concubines, secondary wives, or mistresses!?"
"You have no right to question me," Mo Heng declared from his high position, looking down on him.
Seeing him, Pei Qin immediately played the victim, "They’re bullying me! They say I can’t have children and want to pawn a son off to me!"
"The trafficking of children, consult the Jingzhao Government Office Prefect on how to assign punishment," Mo Heng ordered outright.
The two guards following him immediately came forward to take Fang Hui and her family to the Jingzhao Government Office.
Fang Hui was quick to protest, jumping up, "Who’s selling children! Don’t use your power to frame people! Pei Qin, I’m your aunt! It’s for your own good that I’m sending Yu Lang to you! You’re ungrateful and now you retaliate against us!? Aren’t you afraid that Wei Shu will drive you out and steal your man!?"
Scared, Feng Shouxing quickly interjected, "We’re not selling children! You can’t arrest us!" Now that they had risen in power, they could get them thrown into jail with a mere word. He yelled out, "Even if we are selling children, it’s our own children willing to be sold, and it’s not illegal! It’s none of anyone else’s business!"
"If you really want to sell, I’ll find a buyer for you," Mo Heng said sharply, glancing at the trio before instructing Liu Feng to drive the carriage.
Pei Qin hurried to settle down.
Mo Heng reined his horse around, positioning himself beside the carriage, "Next time we get obstructed by these sorts of people, Liu Feng, you can go move goods to Qiongzhou Prefecture!"
Liu Feng immediately broke out in a cold sweat. He had heard that Qiongzhou Prefecture was situated in the southernmost sea, inhabited by barbarians. Young Master Shen had brought back two people from there, both speaking an incomprehensible language. He quickly nodded in agreement, then looked back at Mo Heng. The General had said earlier this year that he would marry Lu Hai, but the year was almost over, only a few days left!
"Let’s wait until next year," Mo Heng said with a cold laugh.
Liu Feng’s face fell, feeling more and more that Lu Hai was right! This Marquis Mo was indeed difficult to serve! Only the General could tolerate him! He decided to report back to the General; he and Lu Hai both belonged to the General! Not under his command!
Pei Qin had been ready to wallow in her sorrow but brightened up immediately upon her return when she saw the alluring golden doughnuts, "Such ugly doughnuts must have been fried by a certain someone!"
"Try one," Mo Heng said as he picked up a piece to feed her.
Pei Qin took a bite and nodded continuously, "You have the potential to be a chef! With some practice, you could even give our head chef a run for his money!"
Mo Heng’s gaze rippled with warmth and affection as he continued to feed her.
Pei Qin ate bite by bite, "Fried just right, not greasy at all!"
Jiujiu frantically covered her sister’s eyes with one hand, turned her little head with the other, and stuffed a doughnut into her mouth to silence her.
Xixi grabbed one and began to eat, her face breaking into a joyous smile.
"There’s cuttlefish soup simmering on the stove, I’ll serve it with doughnuts as a snack for you this afternoon," Mo Heng fed her another piece.
"Mmm! Cuttlefish soup is delicious! Add some dried scallops!" Pei Qin nodded vigorously.
After eating, Pei Qin took a short nap, then busied herself to the Manufacturing Bureau.
Mo Heng escorted her inside, then stood at the entrance, watching for a while.
The guard saw him linger and couldn’t help but speak up, "Marquis! Would you like to enter?"
Mo Heng withdrew his gaze, "No need." He rode away on his horse to find Ji Bingchu.
As soon as Ji Bingchu heard of his arrival, he immediately sent his attendants away, instructed his men to watch from a distance, and came out holding a book to greet Mo Heng, "Have you made up your mind?"
"Since I’ve come to see you, I have already decided," Mo Heng said indifferently.
Ji Bingchu studied his eyes, cold as chilling frost, and fell silent, "I very much hope it will succeed as well!" He would get upset just from people gossiping about Pei Qin’s inability to bear children, his love for her ran deep. However, this was even better, as it wouldn’t give Song Ming any hope! Then, he would stay by his side for a lifetime!
However, to get Pei Qin pregnant, her poison must be cured first; otherwise, conception would be impossible, and beyond that lay even less hope.
