The Editor Is An Extra-Chapter 36: Foreign languages
"You mean after you were knocked out?"
"...."
I went speechless for a moment.
"Yes Dion, after I was knocked out!" I grumbled. I was intending to ask him about the redhead’s fight, but his question just had to sour my mood.
"Nothing much." he shrugged. "Everyone else took their turn sparring with their matched opponent, after which the instructor dismissed the class."
"I see. Then did you by any chance saw what the rank 1’s ability was?" I inquired.
Perhaps knowing what her ability was might give me an inkling or a clue to remembering something.
"Oh that, uhhh... her opponent surrendered five seconds into the fight." he said somewhat embarrassed. I’d be probably be embarrassed too if I also surrendered five minutes into the match.
Today’s first match was a little more interesting than yesterday’s. One of the students had to be knocked out before the match ended.
Once number 2 was called, a dazzling golden haired figure climbed onto the platform amidst the students’ squealing, mostly grills by the way.
As for me, "Well shit." I thought I had escape the string of this fate, but It seemed fate was just that determined to screw me over. The number I had managed to pick, was also a number 2.
"Best of luck, man." Dion whispered as I began to make my way towards through the cadets.
’Luck?’ I scoffed. Please, luck didn’t have any power here. I was against someone who was an entire major rank above me.
"Fuck this shit." I muttered, stepping into the platform. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
I managed a short nod at my opponent who had his ever present polite smile on his face.
"Though I’ve heard a lot about you, I don’t think we’ve had the pleasure of meeting before." Alistair spoke first.
"Yeah, I’ve heard about you too." I replied flatly. His smile seemed to strain a bit at my reply.
What was he thinking, I would fawn over him? I almost burst out laughing at that, despite myself.
His strained smile soon grew into a chuckle.
"Although, I can’t say I liked the things I’ve heard about you."
I shrugged.
"Well that makes two of us."
Then I scowled. "And why the hell do you think I’d care about what you think of me?"
–What’s this bastard saying?
–He must be crazy.
–Alistair, beat the shit out of that rotten mouth.
–Yeah, show him his place.
’Damn extras.’
Alistair’s smile disappeared.
"I see, well then let’s learn well from each other."
’I think I might have just shot myself in the foot.’ I inwardly sighed.
But did I regret it? Not at all. Who the hell did he think he was? He did not like what he heard about me? Like hell I give a fuck.
"Enough chitchat. Take your places!" Instructor Black ordered.
’All I have to do is last ten seconds, then surrender. Not much of a problem right?’ I thought as I walked to my designated place.
I might have said some things about being embarrassed if I surrendered immediately after the grace period, yeah that was bullshit. I was too thick skinned for that.
I mean, there was no shame in surrendering a lost battle right?
"Begin!" Instructor Black didn’t care that I was lost in my delusions, and ordered the start of the match.
I barely caught the glimpse of the bastard disappearing from his spot, and appearing before me.
Keuk!
I bent forwards, spittle escaping my mouth as the butt of his spear launched into my guts.
It was at that moment I realized something. Mira was absolutely fucking weak for a Theta- ranked aetherial. The difference between her and Alistair was incomparable.
I then saw a boot heading for my head in a roundhouse kick.
’Not this time.’ I was not letting yesterday’s event repeat itself. I barely brought my forearm to the side of my head before the kick connected.
Snap!
An audible snap echoed in my ears, as I was sent flying towards the barrier.
Bang!
I heavily collided with the barrier, before dropping to the ground.
"Fuck!" I cursed, wanting to immediately get off the ground, but a jolt of pain coursed through my nerves the moment I placed my broken forearm on the ground.
That small hesitation from the pain, gave Alistair all the time in the world.
’I’ll be damned.’ From my peripherals, I caught the image of another boot heading for my head, then, everywhere blurred.
---------------
I woke up in a somewhat familiar room. I had to squint my eyes as the white walls of the Infirmary reflecting the bright chandelier.
"Ughhhh!" I sat up with a groan.
My head throbbed like I’d been through a wringer.
Now that I think about it, perhaps it probably wasn’t the best idea to antagonize someone way stronger than me. Especially if they were the protagonist of this world.
I might have been a bit impulsive. I didn’t like Alistair, but that didn’t mean I had to let him know that.
Besides who knows, he might not be as two faced as he was in the novel. After all that was something I saw from a 2D perspective, and this was reality.
After making sure I was fine, I was excused from the Infirmary.
Just like yesterday, those damn extras made fun of me in the hallways, but I ignored them, and made my way for the last class of the day.
I pushed the door open and entered the class.
Everyone turned to me, including the short plump man at the front of the class. I could even hear some of the students snickering.
The plump man turned to me.
"Yes student?"
"Uh, I’m in this class."
He raised a brow, "Well in that case, you’re an hour late."
"Well, I was occupied being unconscious for the past few hours." I replied.
"Well that is none of my problem." he continued.
"Well then, shall I head to my seat?" I asked.
"Well you shall." he nodded.
’Weird.’ I thought. ’Why do I feel like we were using the word ’well’ a little bit too much there?’ I thought as I ascended the stairs to the last row.
In the Astral mystic Institute, unlike the combat class, the rest of the classes weren’t mandatory. One could choose to skip some classes, or not even attend any, so long as they attended the combat class.
Even currently, there were only about 27 students in the class, me included. Though that was partly because I had left most of the absentees in the Infirmary.
Anyway, the language spoken by humans in Nahaar wasn’t English. Not even close. The language was called Namaric, and If someone from earth tried reading it’s letters, it’ll be like an African or European trying to read Chinese, and we all know that is not going to end well.
To be honest, I didn’t actually have to attend this class, I was already well versed in foreign languages. I could speak High elven, the language spoken by the Elves.
Voctyss, the language spoken by Demons, and even Merylya, that of the Merfolk.
I could probably hold a conversation in each of these languages for minutes, my tutor made sure of that.
So why attend the class you ask? Well that, people, was because I didn’t have anything else to do.
Some would say, why not go train then? Hate to break it to you, but I was already doing all the training I could, and I wasn’t about to be training like a maniac every moment of my life.
"Student!"
"Student Damon Darkfell!"
"Huh?" I snapped out of my thoughts to see the plump instructor’s eyes fixed on me.
"Why don’t you tell us what a tree is called in Merylya? I just said it."
’Ah shit. he must have noticed me zoning out.’ I cursed.
"Stand up and tell the class please." The instructor pressed on.
I stood up amidst the snickers.
"Tree in Merylya is called Gudhe."
"Hmmm, that was surprising." the instructor hummed. "But do keep in mind that if you’re not interested in the class, just don’t attend it altogether."
"Noted."
The class soon passed by without any further embarrassment to me, not that I cared.
With a mental tug, I soon found myself back in my room, then dispelled the reflection that took my place.
"This mode of travel really is convenient." I muttered in acknowledgement.
"You know what else is convenient?" Bubbles materialized mid air. "You getting sucker kicked on the face twice in a row, hahahaha!" he burst out laughing.
I scowled.
"Try fighting someone who’s an entire major rank above you."
"You’re just being a sore loser. Who knows, maybe tomorrow you’ll get paired with Fabian."
I scoffed.
"If that happens, I’ll really think the universe is out to get me. And also, don’t raise a red flag." I gave him a chop.
"Already too late." he winced.
"Anyway, I’ve been meaning to ask you, why were you uncharacteristically silent both yesterday, and today?" I inquired.
Ever since I got Bubbles, he hadn’t been one that loved staying in his mark, he preferred the outside, so him not even coming out even as a projection hhwas weird.
Bubbles frowned which only made him look cuter. Though I was never telling him that. His ego was already high enough as it was.
"I don’t know either, my body constantly feels lethargic, and I feel like sleeping more."
I frowned. I was certainly no mystical doctor, so I couldn’t say what was really wrong with him. But if I had to guess from the countless novelkisss I’ve consumed, I would say something interesting was happening.
