The Duke's Masked Wife 2: The Prince's Outcast Bride-Chapter 162: Dangerous stranger (3)
Chapter 162: Dangerous stranger (3)
"I’ll pay some men to have a look into all the brothels. At first sight of the men from the court, the brothel owners close their doors," said Mark, recalling a few times he had been hit by the door.
"Your return is perfect for you to keep an eye on the Duchess’s sister, Kate Kennedy. Her son has been giving a bit of trouble. He’s not the one behind any of this since he doesn’t have money to give away, but he’ll be a problem," Tyrion said. "Perhaps his mother will be too."
Mark thought differently. "Kate won’t be a problem. I can promise you that. The Kate I have seen recently is different from what I knew her to be. She still has a long road ahead of her before she becomes a better person, but she will get there."
"Kate won’t trouble your family, and she doesn’t have anything to do with the attacks," Mark assured Tyrion. "I will keep an eye on her son since everyone seems well aware that he is trouble."
Tyrion sat back down.
"Need I remind you that you are a prince?" Mark asked.
Tyrion looked up at Mark. "Say what is on your mind. I don’t have time to go around in circles."
Mark smiled.
Tyrion certainly was surprising.
"Stop smiling like a fool," Tyrion said, starting to understand how Mark annoyed others.
"I have a feeling that Cassius didn’t pick a random man off the road to kill. You sent someone to get him, and he surprised you. Isn’t that how it happened?" Mark asked, having played this game many times.
"I don’t know what you speak of," Tyrion replied.
"You’re a prince, so it would make it more complicated should I need to look into a case concerning you, but I go after anyone regardless of their status. I will admit that with the town becoming so dangerous, I don’t mind when bad people kill each other, but if anyone innocent dies, I will come after you," Mark promised.
Royal or not, Mark would keep the town safe from bad people.
"You don’t have anything to worry about since I don’t kill innocent people. I do what is best for this kingdom. We’re going to get along well, Mark. I look forward to seeing you again," said Tyrion.
Mark was curious about what laid behind the facade that the prince showed him. When he heard Tyrion was causing the men in the court to be nervous, Mark wanted to see for himself what had become of the little prince.
Mark was yet to figure Tyrion out, but he would keep an eye on him just as he expected Tyrion would keep an eye on him.
"I won’t disrupt you for much longer. My visit with you has been quite useful since I have some places to look. I hope to see Lady Penelope soon. Maybe on my next visit," Mark said, looking forward to the meeting.
Tyrion took a liking to Mark, but Mark was pushing it.
"Don’t show up at my gates again. I prefer not to scare my wife with the sight of you. We’ll see each other in the palace," said Tyrion.
Penelope had seen far too many men from the court and town guards at her father’s home to be afraid of the sight of them. Tyrion wouldn’t allow them to come here.
"I see. Regardless of where we meet, I look forward to getting to know you better, Prince Tyrion. Now, if you would excuse me, I need to visit the duke," Mark said, heading to the door to leave Tyrion alone.
Tyrion didn’t give Mark any reminder to not speak of what he saw here. These days, actions speak louder than words.
If Mark spoke out, Tyrion would place him with the soil in the training yard.
Tyrion went back to looking at what he gathered on the three victims, trying to find something else to connect all three of them.
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Warren arrived at Amelia’s home.
Warren desperately needed the rest of the money Amelia promised him for approaching the Collins family at the ball.
Unfortunately, Warren was met by a maid informing him the lady was not at home and he was not welcomed to sit inside to wait.
Warren stood outside Amelia’s home, trying to think of where to go next. He needed to pay Victor soon or he was certain Victor would come for his head.
Warren got a little carried away by spending the money he got from Victor on clothes to attend the ball and other things he had always wanted, but could have never afforded.
Now, Warren didn’t have enough money to start his plans against the Collins family, and he barely had enough to make a first repayment to Victor.
’She won’t get away with this,’ Warren thought.
Amelia needed to pay him what she promised for the show he put on.
Instead of lingering outside to wait for Amelia’s return, Warren decided to head to the market and meet with Victor to pay back what he had so far.
Warren got on his father’s horse he took when his father wasn’t looking and used it to make his way to the market.
On the lone road Warren took to get to Amelia’s home, he noticed other men on horses riding toward him.
Warren didn’t think anything of it and continued in their direction. It was only when he got close enough to see the travellers’ faces that he panicked, but it didn’t last long since the men rode past him.
Warren touched his chest, sighing in relief. He thought the duke had sent his men for him, but they seemed in a rush to go elsewhere.
Warren’s relief didn’t last long as the horses turned, and the three men started riding back in his direction.
"No," Warren whispered, commanding his horse to keep going, but this time, faster.
How did they know where he was?
Had they been following him?
Warren had been away from home since the ball and hadn’t noticed anyone following him.
Warren gritted his teeth. He rode in search of someone who could see that the duke was hunting him down. He had hoped for a fight with Edgar, but Edgar was a coward who had to send his men to fight his battles.
’Not like this,’ Warren thought.
He wasn’t going to be brought down like this.
Warren’s only mistake was having an old horse trying to outrun the horses used by Edgar’s men.
Warren’s eyes widened as he found himself falling sideways with the horse after the horse let out a cry. It had been struck by something.
A groan laced with a painful cry was heard from Warren after the horse fell on his leg.. Despite the pain, Warren wasn’t ready to stop running.
