The Dramatic Crown Princess Wants to Poison Me!-Chapter 23: Thrill
Xia Wenjin was unaware of the hidden secrets she didn’t know about, nor was she aware of Xia Sichen’s confusion. At this moment, after Qiao Xi left, she pushed open the door of the room.
As the door creaked, two men looked up in panic.
She had thought it was two people living in one room, but unexpectedly, there were others in this room.
Xia Wenjin was also surprised.
The two men had delicate features, but their faces were pale, their eyes filled with terror. Although they wore Brocade Clothes, they didn’t exude any sense of wealth, instead seeming somewhat restrained and awkward.
When they saw that it was two handsome young men who came in, a dark look flashed in their eyes, and they lowered their heads, shrinking into a corner.
The room was large, with a series of bunks along the north wall, spacious enough for four people. There was a small window in the middle of the east wall, open at this time, revealing the blooming flower trees outside, with a fragrance drifting in on the wind.
Xia Wenjin walked over and gently knocked on the table, causing the two men’s shoulders to tremble slightly as they looked up.
Xia Wenjin smiled and said, "You two, what is your relationship with Miss Wang?"
The two men stammered, and the one on the right lowered his head. In that moment, a trace of humiliation and resentment flashed in his eyes.
The man on the left glanced at Xia Wenjin, his gaze enigmatic and without speaking.
But Xia Wenjin had already discerned the meaning in this man’s eyes.
It was the look of someone who had experienced the world, observing a newcomer, with eyes filled with both disgust and vigilance, as well as schadenfreude, mixed with malicious anticipation and a touch of concealed envy.
This person’s thoughts were indeed very complicated.
He quietly said, "What else could we be? Of course, we’re... servants!"
Xia Wenjin said, "Is it just the two of you here?"
The man on the right said, "Isn’t four people in this room enough?"
The man on the left, perhaps to intimidate them or show off his superiority, said, "In this courtyard, there are at least fifteen living servants like us."
Fifteen? Wang Wan’er sure has a big appetite. Xia Wenjin squinted: "What about counting the dead ones?"
Huangfu Jingchen looked at Xia Wenjin’s calm face, unable to fathom what she was thinking. But anger was building up inside him.
Even in Yunzhou, he rarely used his identity to do anything. In this exceptional time against Governor Wang, he didn’t mind taking advantage of his identity for once. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
The man on the left said, "It’s said that quite a few have died..." As he spoke, a flicker of fear crossed his eyes.
Clearly, he had even seen someone die before him.
Xia Wenjin scrutinized them up and down, casually saying, "Are you just waiting here to die? Or do you really enjoy your current life?"
"Only a madman would like it here!" The man on the right flashed a look of anger, gritting his teeth and growling softly like an agitated young beast.
The man on the left, however, smirked coldly and said, "You’ll know soon enough!"
Huangfu Jingchen surveyed his surroundings, looking out through the door at the courtyard outside. The whole courtyard seemed very quiet, with only a few servants sweeping the grounds.
However, he understood that the courtyard he saw was just a small part of this villa, and other places were temporarily unknown.
He wanted to get a sense of the environment, so he walked out the door. But after only a few steps, a servant sweeping the courtyard snarled at him with menace, "Go back to your room! Do you have a death wish? What are you wandering around for? Get back!"
Huangfu Jingchen’s face darkened with anger, but he also understood that they were all under surveillance now. Confronting people so blatantly in the courtyard would only arouse suspicion.
Even the servants were this arrogant.
This made him even more determined to eradicate the cancer that was Governor Wang.
He swallowed his anger and returned to the room.
By this time, Xia Wenjin had already talked quite extensively with the two men. She had learned that the man on the left was called Zhang Quan and the one on the right was named Li Hai. Both were from Yuqing County. Li Hai had been sleeping at home when he was bagged in the middle of the night and brought here. Zhang Quan was knocked unconscious while walking on the road and brought here, having been here for two years now.
After learning how Xia Wenjin and the others had arrived, Zhang Quan felt sour and snorted, "No wonder you talk so lightly." Being kidnapped made them first understand the unfavorable situation, while being tricked into coming meant you didn’t know.
Li Hai advised, "We’re all unfortunate people in a fallen world. They were unlucky enough to catch Wang Wan’er’s eye, so why blame them?"
Li Hai told Xia Wenjin that rooms like theirs were scattered in various parts of the villa, and it was unknown how many there actually were. It was said that those most favored by Wang Wan’er enjoyed a room to themselves.
Except for going to the toilet, they were not allowed to leave the room. Meals were delivered to them daily.
The handsome young men who just arrived here were ignored by Wang Wan’er for the first couple of days. She understood people well, cooling them for a bit before taking them to a certain place. Once they came back from there, no matter how unwilling they were, they would obediently serve Wang Wan’er, fearing they would displease her if they didn’t do well enough. They would serve her until their bones were soft, and their spirits were adrift.
Those who still did not want to serve her, or served her unsatisfactorily, were never seen again.
It was certainly not a matter of being released. Most likely, they had become flower fertilizer under some blooms!
As for the place they went to, when Xia Wenjin asked, both Li Hai and Zhang Quan turned pale, their bodies trembling, jaws clenched, and said nothing.
Huangfu Jingchen glanced at Xia Wenjin. It turned out Xia Wenjin was talking to these two to gather information about the place. Indeed, as they currently knew nothing, Zhang Quan and Li Hai knew at least a little more than them.
Xia Wenjin said, "Couldn’t you try to escape?"
Li Hai shook his head, his expression gloomy, with lingering fear in his voice: "Some tried to run. Regardless of how meticulous the plan was, their bodies would be found in the courtyard the next day, bloodied and covered in wounds. It’s the kind of sight that would give someone nightmares for days!"
It seems the measures are quite strict.
Huangfu Jingchen snorted, "I told you, you’re playing with fire!"
Xia Wenjin chuckled softly, "Don’t you find playing with fire thrilling?"
"You’re crazy! Aren’t you afraid of death?"
Xia Wenjin winked at him and laughed, "Of course I’m afraid. I was scared to death at first. But thinking about Brother Huang being there, I won’t be lonely on the road to the underworld, and I’m not afraid anymore."
Huangfu Jingchen: "..."
He found this fellow becoming more and more unreasonable. Talking to him would be the death of him sooner or later.
Xia Wenjin looked at Huangfu Jingchen’s fine, meticulously drawn face showing such a look of contempt and frustration, and it lifted her mood, making her laugh aloud.
Zhang Quan and Li Hai gave her a look as if she were an idiot. Even at this stage, she could still laugh. Was she bold or just missing a screw?
Such a sunny and bright smile made them both envious and jealous.
Truly, ignorance is bliss. In a couple more days, he wouldn’t be able to smile anymore!
